All Your Gods are Dead by Gary McMahon is a short horrific novella about two brothers Doug and Andy. Andy dies and Doug decides to investigate his brother’s mysterious death.

Doug’s investigation leads to The Church of All Suffering and learns about how they wish to bring enlightenment and the end of the world through pain and suffering.

Many scenes are wrought with emotion and largely character driven. But a few scenes make horror movies such as Saw or Hostel seem tame in comparison.

One of McMahon’s strengths is the dark images he evokes. Usually, descriptions of creatures or monsters are cheesy or just a plain bore, but there are some genuinely horrific things that occur that you have to read for yourself.

McMahon’s prose has a poetic touch, but is terse and descriptive as well. In other words, there are no words wasted here. Each one is meant to be sharp and cuts deep into your psyche.

All Your Gods are Dead is paranoid, atmospheric, and a good example of modern cosmic horror. Pick this book up before you find your God dead.

Actual rating 3.5 stars. This had some very original, never-seen-before ideas and images, but the repetitive line "all your gods are dead" felt like a stretch every time it showed up, and was kind of annoying. Like it was trying too hard to be used. And I don't feel like it was ever really explained what it meant.

A startling, scary sci-fi/horror novella from McMahon, this has all the hallmarks that would later become his signature - grim settings, bleak outlook - and works well.
