Good, solid advice that mostly boils down to:
1. Live below your means; save money.
2. Buy and hold.
3. Don't panic.

Very useful for anyone without much financial or economic background. Highly recommend for anyone wondering what they should be doing with their retirement accounts.

Money is something everybody needs. It's why we work and go to school for so many years. Most people stick to one job/money making method, but what many don’t understand is that investing can be a great way to earn some extra cash. With a lot of knowledge, a small deposit, and a little bit of luck, life could change drastically.
Written by Jack Brennan, Straight Talk On Investing, What You Need To Know, informs on how to heighten investment opportunities.
In Brennan’s book, all types of investment are explained and explored. The pros and cons of each strategy that could make or break your portfolio are carefully examined showing what would be the best plan for you. Brennan suggests, “you should understand something about the risks and rewards of three fundamental asset classes: stocks, bonds, and cash investments” (10).
Investment isn’t all luck, it’s mostly strategy and habits. Brennan talks about the conflicts of investing and the common strategy of stocks. For example, “If I had taken the sensible approach, I would have used the dollar-cost averaging and moved the money into the stock fund gradually over the course of a year” (Brennan 211).
Profitable investing can’t be possible without a proper approach: “You can invest successfully and confidently if you establish four priorities: do your homework, develop good habits, be skeptical of fads, and keep learning about investing” (Brennan 13).
Although the dialogue of this book isn’t for people with a short attention span or people that are not fully invested about learning investing, this book can be exceptionally helpful to those who are willing to put the time and effort into a long book. That being said, people of all ages can read this book. If you're interested in learning more about what you're doing with your portfolio, or want to start investing, this would be a great read!

timeless advice delivered in a palatable manner. useful and real-life applicable tips, lessons, and mindsets. would recommend as a supplemental financial (and long-term life goals) book, rather than a how-to on getting started. having a foundational understanding and setup beforehand helped

As someone young and novice to the field of investing I found this book as an amazing introductory piece regarding smart, and LONG TERM investing. I think it's important to recognize that this book is designed for long term investors. The author Jack Brennan is a former Vanguard mutual fund manager, he is well versed in long term strategy and in this book that is his goal. He takes a novice investor like you or I and starts from the beginning explaining market terms, philosophies, and the best practices when looking to invest as part of retirement. It starts with an introduction into the basics, a look at portfolio construction, how to manage that portfolio, and then how to stay on track in a world wrought with financial turmoil and swings. One of my favorite pieces of this book is that it doesn't read like some other Wall Street finance books about investing like s strict railing off of the numbers. It inputs personal anecdotes, easy to understand definitions, graphics, and financial charts and statements that aren't layered technical indicators only an analyst can understand. The book is an amazing piece of introductory knowledge to any investor and the only general qualm I felt with it is that I wish it had explained the principles of an economy in better detail, but hey that may have not been the goal of this book or what Jack Brennan thought of when he wanted to establish a financial background. I will be reviewing this book again soon and would have to give it a solid five stars.
