Aiden Wilson Tozer was an American evangelical pastor, speaker, writer, and editor. After coming to Christ at the age of seventeen, Tozer found his way into the Christian & Missionary Alliance denomination where he served for over forty years. In 1950, he was appointed by the denomination's General Council to be the editor of "The Alliance Witness" (now "Alliance Life").

Born into poverty in western Pennsylvania in 1897, Tozer died in May 1963 a self-educated man who had taught himself what he missed in high school and college due to his home situation. Though he wrote many books, two of them, "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy" are widely considered to be classics.

A.W. Tozer and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, had seven children, six boys and one girl.

This is Tozer uncorked!

If I was sitting on his back porch after his long career in ministry and asked him to just shoot me straight on what it’s all really about: this is what he’d respond with.

He doesn’t mince his words, doesn’t hold back any punches, and calls it how it is.
This feels like the reflections of an old man who has seem some things in life and ministry and does not have another second to waste on Christless or powerless ministry.

I screenshotted multiple entire chapters to save and read over and over again.

"While I am in my spiritual sympathies wholly on the side of the orthodox Christian faith, I am nevertheless forced to acknowledge that evangelicalism as it has been held and taught over the last half century has tended to paralyze the critical faculties and discourage vigorous thinking. Modern gospel Christians are parrots, not eagles, and rather than sail out and up to explore the illimitable ranges of the kingdom of God they are content to sit safe on their familiar perches and repeat in a bright falsetto religious words and phrases the meaning of which they scarcely understand at all."

Tozer calls the church and the leaders of it to truly examine their hearts and see “Is He Lord or symbol; is Jesus Christ Lord in this act.”

Men think of the world, not as a battleground but as a playground. We are not here to fight, we are here to frolic. We are not in a foreign land, we are at home. We are not getting ready to live, we are already living, and the best we can do is to rid ourselves of our inhibitions and our frustrations and live this life to the full. - Tozer

Old heads always put out good books. It was basically like 35 different books though. Each chapter was a different thought he had on the church. Probably 10 of the chapters in the book were worth a 5 star.

“The Bible was written in tears and to tears it will yield its best treasures. God has nothing to say to the frivolous man.” (First 2 sentences of the book 🔥🔥)

I found "God Tells the Man Who Cares" a really worthwhile, practical read. It would definitely come under the category "Christian Living" as it is quite practical and impacts (more than anything) the day to day living of the Christian person. One downfall I found was that Tozer does not reference Scripture as much as I would appreciate. Mostly, this is fine, however, as the interested reader is easily capable of finding relevant verses and using their "Biblical logic" to determine the truth of what he is writing.

Was also a really easy book to read with short, bite-sized chapters.

It was a suggested read by my Pastor and truly a must read for all believers! Truly incredible that Tozer wrote these 40+ years ago in yet is SO relevant to the time that we live in today. I originally thought it was a book that would be a normal direct read but it actually is a compilation of his writings and sermons to where I read it in the way I would a devotional; focusing on topic by topic vs a fluid straight read if that makes sense. It was SO convicting and deep that sometimes I would read one chapter and sit on it for an entire week, re-reading and letting it sink it completely before moving on to the next chapter. This book was really hard to find and took awhile because everywhere I thought I could find it, it was sold out or on back order. Highly recommend!

This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. At first, I did not like it because of how boring and disjointed it seemed, the points that he made just didn’t appeal to me and I found it easy to skim over the short chapters. But as I reflected during personal devotional time, I discovered just how much of what Tozer writes applies to my own life. I became astonished when chapter after chapter showed up in remarkable accuracy and detail. He makes some astounding realizations and has conclusions that left me wondering how I could have ever seen the world differently. Truly mind blowing and a fabulous read.

Tozer writes in a very understandable way in this book — he has other books that are a bit “old English,” if you will. His passion to keep both the Christian and Christ’s bride in their purest state exudes through his writings in this one. While the thoughts of each chapter aren’t necessarily connected, he’s great at keeping this thoughts clear and concise given the amount of theses he presents and defends. Great read for anyone with a heart for the body of Christ.

A Great Book

Very encouraging and illuminating. More and more, I learn through this writing and others that the Lord Jesus Christ must be MY King of kings and Lord of lords. Not just a king among kings. It all comes down to submission ~ a most unpopular word/concept today. Yet, everywhere we turn, our allegiance is demanded and commanded from a myriad of worldly sources. Bob Dylan said it true: Gotta Serve Somebody.

He that hath an ear ...

A thoughtful analysis of an overlooked digression. Tozer perceived what most can’t because he invested such a large portion of himself and his time in worshiping and listening to God. Tozer’s deep love for Christ and His church compelled him to apply Jesus Christ’s teachings to measure the deviation between what Christ said and what we are doing.

Well written and accurate information about our current times.

God speaks to the man who listens is inspired to encourage and challenge us to remain close to the Lord and not be swayed by the latest trends of Christian life.
For the Church to desire to live and please our Lord Jesus before anything else.

I wasn't sure what I was getting into with this one, but I really enjoyed it. I appreciated Tozer's observations on revival, the Holy Spirit, church health, and, surprisingly, his opening chapter on tears. While he speaks unabashedly (and a bit dogmatically) to the errors of his time, I found most of the content applicable today.

The voice of a prophet

A clear and sobering interpretation of the condition of churches today. Christ as Head of His church must be known as such and this is the earnest plea of this book, left behind for us as as part of Tozer's inheritance to us. Take time to read and listen to it as part of God's direction for our time.

Attention Ministers

Tozer does not hold back. His heart for Christ and His church is exposed on every page. The church is not a playground but a battlefield. We must determine if Christ is Lord or not. Not just a symbol of our faith but our very life. A must read for ever person in leadership.

He is always challenging

Whenever I read Tozer, I am compelled to look inward. His writings force me to look within. If I feel defensive, there is a good chance that Tozer has identified an area that I may be falling short.
Give Tozer a try, his presentation may appear harsh, but he speaks from a profound perspective.

Excellent!

Theologically sound. A good Christian book, should drive you to your knees and cause you to think. This book led me to do both and of course back to the store to find other A W Tozer volumes. I have been blessed.

Timeless Insights

A.W. Tower's words were way ahead of his time. The articles are just as applicable today as the day they were penned. Some of the articles are pithy truths. Some of them are sharp edged critiques. All of them are thought provoking. Challenging.

Exceptional

As usual, AW Tozer was so in touch with what was going on in the world. His insight into the church pulling away from JESUS is spot on. He went to be with JESUS in Heaven in 1963.. but the book could have been written today.
I would recommend everyone read this book!

Deep, honest and practical Christian truths

Tozer has written on many different topics within these pages over many years. Each chapter holds Christ as Lord and speaks to how we may do the same in each situation. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Tozer has a great way of simply describing the problems in our faith and turning our attention back to giving Jesus the position of Lord in our life. Interesting how many of the problems he describes are as relevant today as they were decades ago when he wrote these articles.

Solid book. All over the place but that’s expected since it’s a collection of his writings. Throughout the book he brings up a lot of the dangers that the churches faces and there’s a lot of truth behind his words.

Wake up church!

I believe this is a must read for every Christian, but especially the leaders of the Body of Christ. We must evaluate how we do things and who is the true head of the Body of Christ, the church. You will be challenged and enlightened. Excellent read.

A great compilation of articles from the pen of Tozer. This book covers a wide range of issues but the motif of God speaking to His Church ties them together. Loved it.

Truer words were never spoken, and this was written over 60 years ago. If he were here today what he would have to say would be far more devastating.
