Dr. Heather Manley does an amazing job of relaying very complicated human body functions and vocabulary in a way that is easy to understand in the book Battle With the Bugs. Battle With the Bugs follows Merrin and Pearl into their cousin, Max’s, nasal passage and ear as they discover how the body fights ear infections. The wording is easy for children to comprehend, even when the bigger scientific names are used. The addition of colorful pictures, descriptive wording, and a glossary allows for better understanding of the concepts presented of how the human body reacts during infections. There is also a short section on how to stay healthy and jokes relating to the topic. As a teacher, this would be a great teaching tool for elementary age students.
Isak’s review: (9 years old): Battle With Bugs is very easy to understand. I liked the information about the human body. This can teach kids how the human body can protect itself from dangers. I really liked the jokes at the end!
As with the first, I had my 8-year-old read this before I did. While she was reading, I overheard the following: "I knew they were in the nose! That’s disgusting!" "Eeewww! Mucus!" Not surprisingly, she said the jokes were her favorite part.
Following the same format as the first book, Battle of the Bugs is a great book. The story is interesting and exciting, and no less informative. After the narrative, we have a section with more information on the immune system, interesting facts, part on eating colorful foods to help your immune system, the ever-popular jokes, and a glossary.
A couple of the jokes: Why did the student eat his homework? The teacher told him it was a piece of cake! Why did the boy blush when he opened the fridge? He saw the salad dressing! Why did the germ cross the microscope? To get to the other slide!
I think this might have been my daughter’s favorite, simply because of the gross factor. But I don’t know, because she did like the farts and such in the first book!
Battle of the Bugs Human Body Detectives Case File #2 By: Author Heather Manley
Dr. Heather Manley has done it once again!!! She has brilliantly taken us through another “human body detectives” adventure…..As in her first book “The Lucky Escape” Dr. Heather Manley has through exquisite detail and colorful illustration, taken willingly on an educationally excited journey with Pearl and Merrin once again…..this time with cousin Sam along for the sleuthing, sonrisa…
Manley continues to educate and amaze her young readers with adventurous lessons that will stay with them throughout their teenage years, and even on into adulthood….Just as in her first book “The Lucky Escape” the “Battle of The Bugs” is a definite must have Parents for your child’s Library!!!!

This is a higher level book for slightly older readers. It has a lot of content about the immune system once Merrin and Pearl are inside Max’s body. I think this would bore younger readers and they wouldn’t get as much out of this book.
This is the perfect thing to accompany a unit on the body or immune system. It could also be used with guidance to teach young ones what happens inside your body when you get sick…and why eating sugar is an important thing not to do when this happens!
Other than the immune system language and brief explanations, the book’s language is friendly and the cousins work well together to help Max.
There is a plethora of information at the back of the book, including a diagram of the immune system, facts, jokes, a glossary and more.
