Not a bad story line but slow and drawn out.

A bit of a frustrating read, unfortunately. I'll admit, it held me captive sometime after the first couple of chapters and right through till the end. But in spite of the strength of the story development (which was steady and sometimes tedious, some may say, suspenseful?), the full disclosure of the mystery slid quickly into the end of the book with a slightly belittling rounding up of the events via a letter penned from one character to another, as though the reader would be too silly to surmise it for themselves...this spoilt it for me. I did enjoy the twists though, even though they did seem a little far fetched.

This book is heartbreaking, more family saga than psych thriller but intensely absorbing and cleverly layered.

One simple assumption leads to revelations that affect so many lives, whilst I guessed quite early what that assumption had hidden, it didn't lessen the impact of the story as we meet three very different, very fascinating women tied together by blood and secrets

I loved it. Huge thanks to Catherine Ryan Howard for the recommendation which has seen me off to track down this authors other novels.

Very much recommended.

I was so looking forward to reading "grimly convincing, compulsively readable" novel (according to the British Daily Telegraph). The first few pages drew me in. Then it was followed by a couple hundred pages describing the development of a love affair. Quite boring. In the next fifty pages, I had already worked out the whole thing. Completely predictable with "hints" so blatant that they leave no doubt as to the outcome of the plot. Not at all recommended to anyone who likes a good British-style murder mystery

This was quite a dark and oppressive read. It begins with Grace who suddenly finds herself beneficiary to the estate of two women, her unknown sister and niece. As she tries to unravel their past she discovers a web of shocking revelations, albeit a bit far fetched!
