This definitive book covers the operation, care, repair, and restoration of all kinds of wood windows, along with chapters on weather-stripping, repainting, and refinishing.
This book rocks. Saved us TONS of money, retained the character of our home and launched my window restoration fixation.
Thanks to this book, I've fully restored 12 double-hung windows (yes, both lower and upper sashes, re-glazing -- the whole shebang) and re-hung (much easier) a total of 21 windows. While it does take time, it's so worth it.
Windows are the eyes of our homes! THINK TWICE before you let someone talk you into replacing your beautiful original windows. The long term savings is not usually worth it, and you lose so much of your home's character. Restore whenever possible!
Thorough, comprehensive, and clearly written. I stumbled into a major window project in my 1920s home when I was going to do some simple repairs as seen on "This Old House." Projects that were only supposed to take 60 minutes were complicated by factors like lead weatherstripping that needed to be removed and windows that were held in only by interior trim. I wish I'd had this book before I started the project. I would have know a lot more about what I was getting myself into.
Excellent, super-clear instructions on everything to do with old windows, with the added bonus of pleasant, goofy prose style from a guy who has obviously done this stuff personally thousands of times.
