Eric Gordon Hill OBE was a popular author and illustrator of children's picture books, best known for his character Spot the Dog. His works have been widely praised for their contributions to child literacy. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours.
A solid trilogy of some of Spot's finest adventures. Like many other great trilogies, it deserves a space in everyone's bookshelf. But unlike most great trilogies, there's little tying the respective tales together.
The initial story provides a strong lesson in opportunistically using those you've inadvertently performed a minor favor for.
The sophomore story is your typical "what you're looking for is right at home/under your nose/within you" story, like the Wizard of Oz or Dumbo or The Last Dragon - only this one has the added twist of a mother dog offering her child chocolate chip cookies despite their toxic nature.
The final story isn't the strongest of the trilogy, as in the Mad Max, Terminator, Star Wars, or Godfather trilogies. Much like Mad Max or Star Wars' third offerings, we're treated to the antics of a cutesy agent of destruction. Only instead of smashing up bad guys, we get a creepily detailed statue of tribute to Spot. Spot should look into a restraining order, and make sure his webcam is secured from the outside world.
A wonderful read from my childhood, one I’d certainly suggest for other youngsters. Whilst it is not my all-time favourite childhood read I can still recall all the details of this one meaning it certainly left a lasting impression upon my young mind.
And isn’t that what we want with children’s books, for them to leave a positive lasting impression?
A nice set of easy readers, all in one volume, for "read aloud" reading to toddlers, for reading by beginner readers, and also for reading by struggling older readers who need something for practice and success. Cute stories with lots of repetition of words for practice.
This book contains three stories about Spot. Read how spot flies a kite, what's tempting Spot's nose, and spend a snowy afternoon with Spot and his friends.
