Short, but a useful book regarding how in the wake of the fall of the USSR, Ukraine regained its national vision and turned to an admiration of intellectuals and experts as a means of transcending its bleak Soviet past. The Ukrainian fiction of the 1990s and 2000s also considered the rebel or punk as a core character type—as someone who embraced Western ideals but never fully nor without due questioning, and the intellectual in many ways personified that same character but as older and wiser. This in and of itself is not a new trajectory but one key in post-war Soviet underground fiction and also seen in Taras Shevchenko's seminal Kobzar, however, it illustrated the post-Soviet path of Ukrainian writers and the Ukrainian people. This volume could have been longer and more detailed, but overall a good introduction.

     Чудова книга щоб зрозуміти літературні процеси кінця 90-х та початку 00-х років, й те, як зародилася сучасна українська література.

     Після розвалу СРСР українські митці отримали свободу та простір для власної творчости. Автор виділяє три основні «особливости» діянь митців після отримання цієї свободи: ейфорія, хаос, спільнота. Ейфорія – радість від незалежности, хаос – нерозуміння куди та як ж далі, спільнота - гуртування за певними ознаками.

     Попри те, що це радше наукове дослідження, та читається книга напрочуд легко. Вставки цитат із творів на які відсилається автор допомагають отримати розуміння того контексту, про який наразі йдеться.

     Й цим книга дуже небезпечна, бо то й діло виписуєш собі нову книгу «до придбання», про яку досі або зовсім не чув, або не надто мав бажання прочитати.

     Окремо відзначу оформлення книги – між розділами книги є сторінки із плакатами молодіжного фестивалю альтернативної культури та нетрадиційних жанрів мистецтва у Львові «Вивих» початку 90-х років – їх хочеться розглядати і розглядати.
