Top of Heart: How a new approach to business saved my life, and could save yours too

Rate this book
Achievement almost killed him. Fulfillment saved him. Grant Muller was nearly killing himself – quite literally. A desperate quest to get rich had made him a millionaire before the age of 30 but then taken him to the homeless, living on drugs and hustle. If his lifestyle didn’t end him, one of the thugs he owed money to would surely do the job. So when he finally got off the streets and got clean, he knew everything had to change. He reinvented himself, and along the way came to understand that real success in sales isn’t just about the hustle, about being top of mind. It’s about the human connections you create. In transforming his own life, he transformed his understanding of business. Today he earns his millions as a realtor, living and working with a ‘Top of Heart’ philosophy, the true source of authentic connection, fulfillment and success. His remarkable story is a call to a new, more human approach to business that might just save YOUR life, too. ‘Real-world urgency… A must read.’ Robert Reffkin, Founder & CEO, Compass Real Estate

10/10 stars! A MUST READ!

”Embrace what makes you different. Be courageous enough to show up as you really are, claiming your worthiness. Showing up this way is perhaps the hardest part. We are so much stronger when we allow our differences to take us to new heights instead of new lows. Do it for YOU. Stop performing for people who aren’t even watching you!” -Grant Muller

You know when you read a book and feel like it was written specifically for you and it finds you at exactly the right moment in your life? That’s 100% how I feel about Grant’s Top Of Heart! From start to finish, this book will keep you turning the pages and is full of so many actionable steps and nuggets of wisdom. As a grateful, recovering alcoholic, his personal story to sobriety really resonated with me and makes his comeback story absolutely mind blowing.

This book is an absolute MUST READ for everyone, but especially for anyone looking to elevate their own business to the next level. Sales, of any kind, as always felt gross to me because for so long it has been all about the numbers and connecting with as many people as possible. As an introverted extrovert, that’s extremely draining, but shifting the focus towards building genuine relationships is something I can absolutely get on board with! I have always believed in quality over quantity and the Top Of Heart approach absolutely embodies this mentality and should be what it’s all about.

I can’t recommend this book enough and I’m already gearing up to dive in for a second read because I know I’ll get even more out of it a second time through. Do yourself a favor and RUN to order this book! The ebook is on sale for a special Launch Day price for under a buck, so it’s a STEAL right now! Grant, thank you for trusting me to be a part of your team to get this out into the world.. I love getting early access to books, but absolutely underestimated how much this book was going to impact ME. I am forever grateful and cannot wait to share as it helps make my dreams a reality! 🎉🎊

Grant Muller helps make things not just impassioned, but personal with the release of his new book. Top of Heart: How a New Approach to Business Saved My Life, and Could Save Yours Too lives up to its title, with Muller introducing the titular ‘Top of Heart worldview’ as an elixir to both personal and professional stagnation. “Whether you are facing a life-threatening addiction or a lackluster, unfulfilling sales career, I’ll introduce you to the Top-of-Heart worldview that I discovered as I went to war with my own struggles,” writes Muller in this vein. “But this isn’t just my story, it's yours too. This book aims to help you achieve more without the endless hustle of manipulative sales tactics and scripts that don’t quite feel authentic (not even close). I’ve got news for you – no matter how much you achieve, it won’t bring you true fulfillment. Achievement comes from fulfillment, not the other way around.”

He adds, “Getting real saved my life and you’re about to see how. My comeback required all of me – head, hands, and heart. By the end of this book, you’ll have a clear picture of the mindset, skillset, and heartset to get EXACTLY what you want in business and in life.” It’s underscores like this, along with a more objective presentation of the methodology making Muller have an unusually affable and humanistic presence. The nonfiction subcategories of Business and Leadership Advice often are maligned for a cold, removed, and decidedly flinty tone that belies what the authors often attempt to do. Muller though avoids this by simply forgoing the typical, paternalistic house style prevalent in work akin to what Top of Heart ideologically promotes. Dare I say, as a South African-American, that has something to do with Muller’s own origins growing up in South Africa. Similar to the American concept of the Midwestern mentality, there’s a decidedly get-to-the-point mentality cutting through any overtly verbose, or vapid and flowery delivery. People say what they mean, and mean what they say. Such a communicatory aesthetic is welcome relief to a genre often hackneyed by ego more than genuine good advice…

Once again, it’s because this good advice on Muller’s part is hard-won. Muller on his own went through hell and back, going from homelessness to successful entrepreneurship. His willingness to share this in a direct but matter-of-fact and unsentimental house style is part of what makes everything work. It’s also what, in the end, helps win the reader’s trust. You get the sense Muller’s hands are black, not just full of acquired knowledge or statistically-backed references obtained from secondhand sources. He’s hardcore, and hands-on.

“Making my way from the meth nightmare on the mountain highway to the breakfast meeting was a long journey. On the way to saving my life, I learned to get real for the first time. While stumbling into my own humanity, I uncovered the distinction that unlocked the world for me,” Muller writes, essentially confirming the aforementioned. In many ways, that alone makes his story worth telling – let alone for his smart, concise, and decidedly holistic philosophy he developed from this.

Around 70% of the book is about addiction and struggles with it and from it, poor choices and decisions, fear, and inability to see through that something is off. The remaining 30% seems like typical advice, that wouldn't really look like huge revelations to the readers.
Going into the book I was expecting some motivational read, beating the issue, the addiction, overcoming it (5%), and then searching for true purpose and winning at life. This is not it. I kind of felt like I was sitting at one of those drug addict meetings, the author went to, and I was being BSed while the author was sitting on the high horse.
I'm sorry Grant Muller, but it seems like you are still on that high horse and not for a good reason, using a victim card with a "look at me" mentality. I feel very sorry for the author's family. That's it. I didn't feel motivated, as there was little to be motivated by. Caring for people you sell stuff to is good, but I would say, in business, it's a baseline not to feel shitty by the end of the day.
3 stars or 5/10, It's not a bad book, not a good one either. It's written pretty fine with some repetitive things. But I didn't feel disgusted, although it was unpleasant, as it should be, reading about the drug addiction experience, so kudos for that.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’m not sure how Grant Muller was able to level his pride thoroughly enough to bring this book to fruition but thank goodness he did! Top of Heart is a precious gift to salespersonkind. Grant takes us along for his ride from a life of petty (and not-so-petty) crime, homeless and selling meth, to a life of integrity and well-earned success selling millions a year in Denver real estate. Grant’s story is not just a thrill ride of a rags-to-riches autobiography. That it is, but it is also a program of action for sales professionals who want a career and a life that are aligned with their higher selves, and who are willing to get honest with themselves and those around them to get there. Whether in real estate or any other sales profession, being real and serving others is a common profile that I see in my highest-performing coaching clients, and it has clearly served Grant well. I only wish I would have found it earlier in my own sales journey; it would have saved me a lot of awkward conversations and alienated acquaintances.

This book is a compelling personal narrative that chronicles the transformative journey of Grant from the depths of self-destruction to a life of meaning and success. 🙂

Through his redemption, Mueller discovered that success in sales and business is not solely dependent on hustling or constantly being at the forefront of people's minds. Instead, he realized that authentic connections and relationships lie at the core of achieving fulfillment and prosperity. By adopting a "Top of Heart" philosophy, Mueller redefined his approach to business and embraced the power of human connections. 🙌

A must-read if you're looking for an honest, heartfelt tale to motivate you to improve personally and professionally. This is the book you should read if you need inspiration. 😀
