We noticed in this one and in the bird one (Why Do Birds Sing?) that there are some inaccuracies- specifically that they have nocturnal animals/birds awake during the day. A little odd.
What Is A Jungle? by: Chris Arvetis Type of book: Informational, children's book, picture. It could be also catagorized as fiction since the animals talk. Awards: none Summary: This book is a informational but also fiction book about the jungle. It includes vocabulary and information about the climate, plants, animals, weather, and overall environment. It also shows a map of all the different jungles. It starts with a mouse that doesn't know where he is. He is informed by a monkey about the jungle. The mouse asks a series of questions throughout the story and gets the answers by asking the animals that live there. Critique: I think this is a very fun and exciting book to inform lower grades about the jungle. If I were to read this book to a class I would explain about how animals can't really talk and that's the fiction element of the story. The fun and bright colors made it a great reading experience. The wording and vocabulary is lower level/grade and can reach younger children. I believe this book would really keep kids engaged.
Prompts and questions to ask students when reading: page 1-2 when it asks " where am I?" I can have the students guess where they think he is. 3-4 "what type of weather do you think a jungle has?" 5-6 "so do jungles ever get cold?" 16: "Based on the pictures you have seen so far, what type of animals do you predict are in the jungle?"
Craft element: I would do this with a lower grade based on the reading level. I would have the students color a mask of an animal in the jungle that they remember and write about what their life would be like if they lived in a jungle. Or I can have the students draw a picture of their favorite part of the jungle and write about it.
