Alice Provensen collaborated with her late husband, Martin, on numerous highly acclaimed picture books, including the Caldecott Medal-winning The Glorious Flight and Nancy Willard's Newbery Medal-winning A Visit to William Blake's Inn, which was also a Caldecott Honor Book. The Provensens have been on the New York Times list of the Ten Best Illustrated Books eight times.
If even a full-on energetic, impatient, and can't-be-quiet kid will sit still, look carefully at every picture and listen in utter silence while this book is being read to him - and want to hear it again, it must be something special. (I happen to love the Provensen's work, but to witness Squirt love it too is wonderful.) The Maple Hill Farm books have a quiet charm, especially this one. The animals all have personality. Makes you want to move there, just to enjoy them more.
I love the Provensens' animal books and was delighted to find this one in a pile of donations at my library. Not quite as rib-busting as Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm, but this one is still full of the authors' signature wryness and warmth.
