Cassius of Kural and his companion, the sorcerer Pendaran, together with a ragtag army, race against time to stop the dark forces out to free the evil Shadowking from his tomb
After picking up this non-descript title and feeling the coarse yellowed pages, I was keen to investigate the fantasy title by Troy Denning (best known to me as the author of several Star Wars stories I loved as a child).
Having folded the back page of this thin paperback (288 pages) I found myself scratching my head; was this a book that I read, complete with characters, plot, and depth of story? No, unfortunately this is not the case.
There are fine moments of action and intrigue buried between frequent dog-eared breaks, and the characters show some minor changes along the briefest of archs, but the true fun comes from Dennings ability to write a battle. For all intents and purposes this was written soley for that purpose.
The clash of swords and the cleving of limbs seems to paint the same picture over and over, and the final moments of the book seemed rushed and confusing. In the end it was a neat little escape but leaves nothing to recommend to friends.
Short novel, plot is action based and covers invasion to defeat, but not what follows. Good for a quick read, but not as engaging as I'd hoped from the first chapter.
Would recommend to those familiar to the game this novel is based off, or those who prefer action plots.
having read denning before through his darksun work this paled in comparison. the characters didn't have the depth that I like and the story didn't draw me in
