Anyone can pour juice, bake a cake, and kiss away hurts—right? But maybe—just maybe—it's not so easy when you are very small!
Daddy pours juice without even thinking about it, Grandma bakes a cake effortlessly, and the next-door neighbor rides a bike as if he were born on one!
Whatever is happening, our little heroine wants to join in and do it too. With caring support from her family and many friends, she not only finds she can do it too, but soon she is big enough to pass on loving encouragement of her own.
I Can Do It Too! by Karen Baicker is a book that focuses on a child’s ability to do the same activities that older relatives and siblings can do. From pouring juice in the morning for breakfast to singing and playing guitar with her uncle, the vivid illustrations make clear connections with the text emphasizing the specific task that the child is trying to conquer while increasing her confidence. The visible brush strokes make the illustrations come alive. The rhyme schemes used throughout the book from beginning to end are helpful in allowing children to follow the story with ease. The reoccurring phrase “I can do it too!” allows the reader to continuously participate in the telling of the story. Children can easily associate with this story because it deals with the autonomous stage in a child’s development.
What I enjoyed about this book, is that it encourages a read-along with a child. The repetitive use of “I can do it too!” Allows you as the reader to involve the child and say the phrase with you. It adds an extra layer of participation for the child.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - I loved the book so much I would reread it again and would recommend to a friend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Thoroughly enjoyed the book, could not put it down, would recommend to a friend, but do not need to read again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Probably a good book that I enjoyed but there was something about it I did not love (e.g. The writing style, the POV, etc.). I would only recommend to a friend if it was their "type" of book. ⭐️⭐️ - A book I have below average feelings for and it would not come with a recommendation from me but I would mention it in conversation if related to the book topic at issue. ⭐️ - I finished the book but I hated every second of it.
I Can Do It Too!, is about a young girl who wants to show her family that she is capable of doing grown up things like her family members. When her dad pour juice or when her grandma bakes cake, she wants them to know that she is a big girl and can help. In the end, she is bigger and joins in to to congratulate the baby when he learns to walk. The theme in I Can Do It Too is about growing up and children learning how to perform tasks like adults. I enjoyed this book because of the illustrations and colors they used. The colors and pictures brought the book to life and displayed the tone of the book. I give this book three stars and recommend it for children that want to be more involved and do adult actions.
diverse picture/board book (getting older/independence, family; toddler/preschool 18 months-6 years) * Prominently features diverse characters: yes, a sweet African-American preschooler and her family (dad, mom, uncle, big sis, little brother, uncle) and friends (her best friend is white, her neighbor is black). * Great choice for toddler or preschool storytime: large, colorful pictures and short text that kids will relate to, plus a snappy refrain that encourages audience participation.
This is a fun one with great, bold images for toddlers. It's perfectly reflective of what a toddler's world is made up of -- things that they're learning to do, things that their family and friends do. The refrain of "I can do it, too!" is what makes it work so well -- get the kids and their caretakers to say it along with you.
A book perfect for toddlers. In this book the character does everything like her family members. And even when she is a little off, she is proud of herself. At the end of the story, she is able to be proud of her younger sibling. This book captures the toddler desire to try to do everything by herself and mimicking. A great book for new big brothers and sisters, too.
Great book to do for "myself" theme or "growing up" -- a girl shows her family how she can read, play guitar, and get dressed like the rest of her family. Simple, rhyming text will appeal to toddlers and preschoolers with short attention spans.
Perfect for little ones who have said so many times "I can do it too!" This adorable picture book follows a little girl as she pours her own juice, buttons her own sweater, and does all sorts of other things throughout the day all by herself.
A wonderful picture book about a little girl who tells us all the things her family can do that she can do too. Her refrain throughout the book is, "I Can Do It Too." It is a great way to get toddlers excited to be self sufficient.
A toddler goes through their day repeating the actions of those around it and saying I can do it too. A little long but with the toddlers repeating I can do it too, I think they can do it. Nice sense of celebrating accomplishments.
Show your child they can do it too! Be more independent, be more confident in their skills and abilities, be more of a big kid! Beautiful illustrations and easy to read rhyming words for that growing child in your life.
I read this book three times. The kids love it. They love filling in the blanks when I stopped reading. They enjoyed filling in "I can do it too". Great read for children 1 - 3 years old.
TERRIFIC! I love the illustrations. They remind me of Haitian art that I used to see in the galleries of Key West. The story is very good and is good for new walker/talkers.
In this book, the little brother watches his older family and friends, especially his older siblings do things so effortlessly that he can not quite do. But he wants to give it a try and prove to his family that he can do it even if he is little and not quite big enough for some things yet. He gets love and encouragement from his family, and learns to do things on his own. This book uses similes to describe his adventures. I would rate this a 5 because it does a good job of explaining what he needs help with and can show kids that they can do anything that they set their minds to.
It reminds me of the British cartoon of “Charlie and Lola”. So colorful and bright of a young sibling wanting to grow up and do things like everyone else. Cute!
I love to say “I Can Do It Too” with each new activity. I love the colors and illustrations too. They draw me right in. This has been a favorite of mine since I was 1.
A young child is learning to do things by copying what the adults in her life are doing. She then encourages a younger child. Nicely illustrated and simply told.
I CAN DO IT TOO! A Review ---------------- The book and illustrations are cute enough.
The underlying message and reading level are appropriate for kids between 1.5 and 3 years.
It is important to teach little ones that they can do things for themselves and hopefully to approach every challenge as an opportunity. Of course, it is also important to teach them when and how to ask for help, so this book might be best if coupled with a story about asking for help or staying away from danger.
