Kamala Suraiyya (born Kamala; 31 March 1934 – 31 May 2009), also known by her one-time pen name Madhavikutty and Kamala Das, was an Indian English poet and littérateur and at the same time a leading Malayalam author from Kerala, India. Her popularity in Kerala is based chiefly on her short stories and autobiography, while her oeuvre in English, written under the name Kamala Das, is noted for the poems and explicit autobiography.

Her open and honest treatment of female sexuality, free from any sense of guilt, infused her writing with power, but also marked her as an iconoclast in her generation. On 31 May 2009, aged 75, she died at a hospital in Pune. Das has earned considerable respect in recent years.

Madhavikutty or Kamala Suraiyya Das will always be in my top 10 most favorite authors list.

If you ask me what is my favorite when it comes to her work of her, it will be difficult to reply. This story called Pakshiyde Manam will be there right at the top, as I was simply mindblown by how she crafted this story.

This book has a collection of nine stories. All of them are equally good. Pakhiyude Manam is a story that you should never miss, as critics consider it one of the best stories written by Madhavikutty.

An evocative collection of nine short stories by Madhavikutty (Kamala Das). Every time I read her work, I’m left in awe of her enigma. Each story is layered, deep, and poignant, capturing the many mysteries of womanhood with striking honesty. The way she portrays the inner worlds of women is truly breathtaking.

Several stories also vividly depict life in Kolkata during the early 1960s, bringing alive the city’s social atmosphere, relationships, and quiet tensions of that period. This historical and cultural backdrop adds another compelling layer to the narratives.

I loved every single story and would highly recommend this collection to all Malayalam readers.

മാധവിക്കുട്ടിയുടെ കഥകളെ കഥാകളായി മാത്രം കാണാൻ കഴിയാതെപോയ ഒരുപറ്റം ആളുകളാണ് അവരുടെ വിജയവും പരാജയവും. അവരെഴുതുന്നതെന്തും അവരോട് ചേർത്തുവായിച്ചു ശീലിച്ചുപോയി മലയാളികൾ. അതറിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ബോധപൂർവ്വം കൊണ്ടുവരുന്ന പേരുകളും സ്ഥലപ്പേരുകളും കൊണ്ട്‌ കഥ അവരുടേത് തന്നെയെന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. അതാണ് ഈ കൗശലക്കാരിയായ എഴുത്തുകാരിയെ ഞാൻ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നത്.... ❤️💝

oru pakshiyude manam

a book far ahead of its time, and i was very late to read this.

it left me thinking, how bold Ms. Kamala would have been, coz in the days when this was penned, voice of a women was a crime. i may belong to a third generation after the book is written, hence many of the stories, situations and character felt familiar, seen in movies, short-films or documentaries, or even read in some other places. Yet there was no boredom in living a generation that maybe my parents belonged, or their teenage did.
