The Handbook of Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Study of the Ancient Language

Rate this book
Hieroglyphs are the picture signs used in the ancient pyramid texts, and the hieratic script derived from them are both covered in this manual, offering a concise introduction to the language of Ancient Egypt. This edition contains a new introduction, bi-directional glossaries and more hieroglyphs. Recognizing the complexity of the Egyptian language, the author devotes a chapter to each grammar point and includes exercises to reinforce the information provided. Extracts from pyramid texts and passages from Ancient Egyptian writing provide reading practice.

This is a relatively easy to follow text for those interested in having a working knowledge of egyptian hieroglyphs from the classical period. The book includes some good practice passages for you to cut your teeth on. I would recommend it for anybody wanting to "get the gist" of an inscription rather than producing an accurate, thorough translation.
