***in all candor, I am a PhD student in political science who focuses on Indigenous studies*** This relies on so many problematic tropes from cultural appropriation to the hyper-sexualization of indigenous bodies. It romanticizes Indigenous culture and only tangentially speaks to the problems of settler colonialism. The main female is kind of annoying and there are plot elements that are never really explored. Some of the characters are flat and only serve as plot devices. The first 60% of the book is too slow and the only interesting parts take place in the last 100 pages.
Having said all of that, I read this book because I love the ways authors work to describe all our naughty bits. In this arena the book did not disappoint. There are really problematic themes, but the story isn't terrible and it is a period romance. So if that is what you are looking for and you can get past some of the broader socio-political issues, this may be the book for you.
