I just found this book in my library, and thought it was missing. Great joy! I re-read the book this early afternoon, and again, I find Howard Devoto a masterful lyricist. The second-time read brings out the Bob Dylan influence - which I wasn't aware during my first reading of this book, nor listening to the early Buzzcocks and Magazine. Even though, Devoto is a true original. His word-playing works well on the printed page. Down below is the original review I did back in 2008. I will for sure, never lend this book out again. Thanks Amoeba for stocking this rare used copy.
The Cole Porter of Manchester UK or of the brown coat crowd. A smart and literary man who had the delivery and presence that made the late 70's and early 80's so appealing. A long time Morrissey favorite, Devoto lyrics for his bands 'Buzzcocks' and 'Magazine' were sculpture like pieces that exposed a great amount of wit and menace.
Essential music listening and his lyrics read really well. A hard to find book, and I lost mine some years ago to a friend who promised to bring it back to me. I am no longer that person's friend.
