The heroine’s feckless irresponsible brother is in a bind. His mistress, one of the “Pretty Horse Breakers” (In Victorian England a group of women, who were skilled equestrians, but also employed as Mistresses of aristocratic gentlemen) has left him for a far wealthier Lord who can provide her with a diamond necklace.

Since the heroine and her brother are of the nobility, but are poor, the brother is not in the position of competing w the rich Lord. However, he has been invited, by their wealthy neighbor, a Marquis, to join a competition where the prize is £1,000. It is a couples competition, and the mistress would have completed with him.

He now pleads with his sister to take her place since he needs someone who is not only beautiful but is quite skilled in riding. All the other contestants will be brining their own partners who will all be pretty horse breakers. No ladies will be in this party.

The brother is quite selfish and self centered so he justifies putting his sister in that situation by telling her that they will leave immediately after the competition. Of course he leaves a lot of details out.

Since the heroine is always kind and accommodating to her brother she goes along w the plan. Of course the brother has omitted to tell her he will introduce her as Fifi 😏 and he also neglects to tell her she could have worn boots to ride, and she is only wearing the slippers that go with her costume. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Anyway, they win the competition and the £1,000 prize, to the ire of the Mistress. Since they are the winners, the Marquis insists that they stay for the next days celebration, and being the wimp that he is, the heroine’s brother agrees.

Naturally this exposes her to unpleasantness, since all the other gentlemen assume she is also a pretty horse breaker. She is exposed to a lewd show that shocks her and the attentions of a drunk lord, that the Marquis needs to save her from. Her brother never seems to bothers to worry about her. The Marquis suspects she is different since naturally her speech is more educated than the other women there.

During dinner, the heroine, who can lip read, realizes that the couple in front of her are plotting to poison the Marquis’ horse so that he will lose the race. She wakes early to foil the plot of this lord, by throwing out the horse’s water.

Unsurprisingly, the Marquis wins to the consternation of the scheming couple. However, the evil Lord somehow finds out that it was the heroine who foiled his plans and he starts assaulting her. Thankfully the Marquis arrives in time to save her.

He brings her to her room to be attended to, where he finds out what the plan was. He gets her brother to help and they look for the poison tablets in the evil Lord’s room. Conveniently there are instructions on how to administer the poison 😂 so they know exactly which ones they are.😉

He throws the evil Lord and his woman out, with the admonishment that he will ban him from all racing and even the clubs he goes to. It is social ostracism at its best.

While the heroine is recovering, he tells her how beautiful he finds her and offers her his ‘protection’. The heroine knows exactly what he means as she has now been exposed to all the gentlemen with their bits on the side. So she tells him she can never leave Mark (her brother) and she steals off early in the morning and rides home.

Her brother comes following soon after and tells her his good news. The Marquis has offered him a post abroad to buy horses for him! The brother is totally excited and he will now earn a bit of money.

Soon after the brother leaves for London. The heroine is moping about because she has also fallen in love w the Marquis. Then he arrives, he has found her. He confesses that he fell in love with her at first sight and he actually offered the overseas job to her brother to take him away from her. It was only after that he found out her brother had a sister named Filipa, and he suspected it was not as it seemed and came looking for her.

They get married. The brother is able to walk her down the aisle before he leaves on his new job as horse agent for his brother in law.

Alls well ends well.
