Prom queen, cheerleading captain, and royal pain in my ass.
I haven’t seen her in ten years and in our first reconciliation, I end up with soda spilled on the crotch of my pants while she sways in front of me in her cowboy boots.
I chalk up our meeting as a coincidence, but then she starts popping up everywhere, including the self-defense class I teach in the evenings at my best friend’s gym.
Tight spandex slathers her curves and her sassy mouth starts to play tricks on my mind, making me yearn for a girl that is so far out of my league it’s not even funny.
You see, Sydney is a lawyer now, and I just got out of prison.
I’m trying to get my life back on track and stay away from temptation. But the princess from the other side of town is igniting a craving in my body that I can’t ignore.
Seems she feels it too because one night she asks me to fuck her and I about choke on my tongue.
Friends with benefits becomes the game we’re convinced we’re playing, but there’s a lot more friendly behavior happening than should.
And the lines get blurred so quickly, I feel myself falling for the girl that I want to corrupt with every flick of my tongue.
The girl I shouldn’t want, but do with every fiber of my body.
But will she still want me when she finds out what I did?
Will I fit into her world? A world that comes with an overbearing father who thinks he knows what’s best for his daughter even at twenty-eight?
One thing is for certain though: When it comes to falling for Sydney Matthews, I’m guilty as charged.
*Trigger Warning: Past rape is referenced in plotline. Please be advised.
Harlow James is a wife and mom who fell in love with romance novels, so she decided to write her own.
Her books are the perfect blend of heartwarming, addictive, and steamy romance. If you love stories with strong females, found family and friend groups, and plenty of emotion and steam with a guaranteed Happily Ever After, then Harlow is your new best friend.
When she's not writing, she can be found working her day job, reading every romance novel she can find time for, laughing with her husband and kids, watching re-runs of FRIENDS, and spending time cooking for her friends and family while drinking champagne or a blended margarita.
When I read the blurb, I liked the idea of an ex-con with a lawyer. However, the execution of it disappointed me.
*********************************************
What I didn't like:
1. It's always the woman who goes after him. I like it when the man pursues the woman, not the other way around.
I really wanted to see a moment where he pursued her but nope. She goes to his house and tells him that she wants him to f*ck her. She is the one who first says she loves him. It's always her.
*********************************************
2. For 1 month, their relationship is pure sex with some kink in it and they never kiss. He doesn't kiss her as he thinks kissing is more intimate than sex. And she is OK with it because the sex is good. Sorry but I didn't like the one-month sex marathon with no kissing.
Maybe because she always pursued him, or maybe because they didn't even kiss for a long time, I never felt their chemistry or anything during those sex scenes. Honestly, I got bored during all of them. Normally, I always look forward to the "explosion of the chemistry" moments - the first kiss, the first sex etc - but here I didn't feel it at all.
*********************************************
3. The guy went to prison for aggravated assault because he beat the man who raped his sister. He beat him within an inch of his life and he lost hearing in one ear. What I disliked - no, what I hated is that the sister didn't want to press charges for the man who beat her and then raped her while she was unconscious and because she wanted to keep the event under wraps, her brother couldn't give a reason for beating that man and he was sentenced to 2 years. If he had been able to give the reason of his violent behavior, his lawyer said he wouldn't have had that sentence.
I was really pissed at his sister and I was also angry with the guy for not insisting that she should press charges. So what happens is he goes on raping women. He even assaults the heroine and only after that, years later, they decide to come clean. Wow... maybe better late than never but it was too late for me.
*********************************************
4. The father of the heroine changes unbelievably at the end of the book. A man like that cannot change. At least, not this much, not to this extent and not this quickly and easily.
Either the writer shouldn't have created such a rigid and controlling character, or she shouldn't have changed him in the blink of an eye with just one piece of information. It was not convincing at all.
*********************************************
5. The book is too long. 391 pages. It is longer than necessary, for sure.
*********************************************
For all the reasons above, the book was disappointing for me.
*********************************************
Writing & safety:
The writing is good and the book is safe as there is no cheating. The man doesn't sleep with anyone else after meeting her and she doesn't sleep with anyone else after meeting him.
* Actually, they went to the same high school together but they weren't in the same circles and they didn't like each other then. So what I say about not sleeping with other people is about the present, not when they really first met, which is at high school. Now, they meet again after 10 years.
*********************************************
Let me just share one QUOTE with you so that you can see how their relationship begins. Maybe what I didn't like could be someone else's jam.
“What is it that you want, Sydney? Why are you really here?” If what I think is going through her mind is true, I want to hear her say it out loud.
“I want …” she trembles before clearing her throat, channeling more resolve, and then speaking stronger, commanding me with her voice and body. “I want you to show me what it’s like for someone to make decisions for me that don’t result in frustration or anger. I want you to show me what it’s like to be pleasured, wound tight within an inch of my sanity until I’m begging for you to let me come.” She takes a deep breath of courage and then continues. “I don’t want to think about what comes next, whose expectations I have to live up to … I just want to let go. Be owned. Can you do that? Can you show me what it’s like to be with someone like you?”
“Someone like me?” I question, wondering exactly what she means by that as my hands move from the counter to her hips.
“Yeah. A bad boy. A man that knows how to fuck. A man that I shouldn’t want, but do.”
Banter erupts fueling passion and unrestrained need. Harlow James delivers a steamy opposites attract romance in her latest novel, Guilty As Charged. A hero fighting to rebuild his life, a heroine desperate to break out of her shell, opposites brought together by fate. Sydney and Javier’s bumpy beginning evolves into combustible chemistry, and ignites into a lustful agreement. However, when their relationship morphs into deep longing, they quickly find themselves wanting more, but the past returns jeopardizing their future.
Harlow James is bringing out the big guns with this new book Guilty As Charged!
Javier is fresh out of prison after doing time for reasons he wouldn’t share with the judge. He is the ultimate bad boy with a big heart from the wrong side of the tracks. Also he is hot hot hot!
Sydney has grown up in a law abiding family where she has never crossed the line. The prom queen has always done as told and is ready to let loose in life. She also has hilarious bookstagramming best friend who is such a great sidekick for Sydney.
When these two enemies turn lovers come together it is explosive and what starts as fun quickly turns into more. With so much standing in their way it all seems impossible. This book about the rich girl and the bad boy is steamy and fabulous and I loved it! It’s so different from the other books I’ve read by this author but still a great small town romance. Definitely recommend!
Guilty as Charged is a standalone hate to love opposites attract romance. It follows Javier & Sydney who went to high school together and fall back into each other's lives many years later.
Sydney is a complicated and complex character. She has a strong and independent mindset when it comes to wanting more for her life than the expections and ideals set upon her by her family and her upbringing. She is trying to become more confident in standing up for herself and after a traumatizing incident she is also trying to find ways to protect herself and become the hero of her own story. She is honest, caring, compassionate, genuine and I understood why it took so long for her to really start standing up to her father while finding a way for her to actually be heard by him. I really liked her character and the way she grew throughout the entire story.
Javier is dealing with a lot. He is recently out of prison and trying to get his life back on track. It took me quite a while to warm up to him. I wasn't the biggest fan of the circumstances that lead to his arrest but I had a feeling it happened the way it did so the story could circle back at the end. I felt sympathetic towards him and what he was dealing with but I also found him to be harsh and unfairly judgmental and somewhat hypocritical which made it hard for me to connect to him.
Javier was incredibly judgemental of Sydney to begin with and let his preconceived notions of what he thought she was like affect the way he treated her. At one point he even scold's a co-worker for objectifying Syndey saying she deserves respect even though the way he judges her is imo just as disrespectful. The shift between the 'Hate to Love' aspect didn't work for me and personally it took too long for him to change his view or even realise how wrong he was acting especially since he himself knows what it feels like to be judged this was a major reason as to why I did not enjoy his character and even though I tried to connected with him I sadly didnt until almost the end.
A lot of the story felt repetitive including some of the descriptions, phrases used as well as some dialogue. I just wanted a little more variation with the information being relayed. I feel its possible to do this and repeat important parts of the story without it feeling repetitive/overdone. This included parts of Javier's background and culture which again imo needed a little more substance and care without it being stereotypical.
Sadly when I can't connect to one or both of the main characters then I usually can't enjoy any of their lighter and flirty moments, their intimate & steamy moments or majority of their realtionship development which was the case here for me. I still really enjoyed Sydney's story and her character growth and watching he stand up for herselfelf and what she deserves. It was definitely my favourite part of the story and what kept me reading until the end. The idea and premise behind the story is a good one and I'm sure many others will love it, even though this wasn't my favourite story by Harlow I still enjoy her writing and can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
《book aesthetic made by me. I do not own the pictures, all found via pinterest》
《my reviewing system is in my bio for those interested on how I choose to rate books》
I received an ARC of this book from the author in return for an honest review. Enemies to lovers ✅ hot sex scenes ✅ angst ✅ humour ✅ fun friends ✅ overprotective father ✅ wrong side of the tracks ✅ him ex convict ✅ her lawyer ✅ injustice ✅ This book had it all and I was hooked from the start. Javier and Sydney were both strong characters who you couldn’t help but fall in love with. I loved Ally(Sydney’s friend) too, she was funny and just what you want in a best friend. A real page turner of a book which I read in a day, highly recommended, it has a trigger warning of previous rape although this doesn’t go into graphic detail.
I had the honor of reading this early and I’m so grateful! This book is the first outside the Emerson Falls series. These characters are edgier but still have the heart and emotion you have come to expect from Harlow James. Javier is an ex-con rebuilding his life while staying on the straight and narrow. Sydney comes spilling (literally 😂) back into his life. At first he’s annoyed by her and her rich girl persona. He doesn’t realize that they have more in common than he knows and their chemistry is undeniable. When Sydney shows up at his gym to take a self defense class, he’s faced with seeing her more than he wants. He doesn’t realize what Sydney has been through and why she needs to learn to protect herself. Meanwhile, Javi is still feeling the guilt for what happened to his sister and keeps punishing himself for his perceived inability to protect her. However, It seems like these two are fated lovers when they can’t stop running into each other and the magnetic force can’t be denied. The electricity between them turns into a friends with benefits situation, but when feelings start evolving, they’re faced with the ugly truth. A guy from the wrong side of town and an attorney with an overbearing father, what could go wrong? This book was amazing and I appreciate the maturity of Harlow’s characters. I felt every emotion under the moon while reading this. I was so proud of Sydney for protecting herself, I was angry with Javi for not realizing he was always a good man, I loved Syd’s bff Ally! I cried at the end! This book has everything, danger, suspense, steam 🔥, angst, second chances, so much love and the perfect ending!!!
Javier was a tough guy to get to know, but underneath his gruffness and bossy attitude was an absolute sweetheart for those lucky enough to penetrate his shields. I loved how Sydney wiggled her way in to his heart and held on tight, hoping everything would work out for them.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The family drama could get heavy at times, but with humor, thoughtful conversations, and thank-you-for-unfiltered-besties-who crush-on-the-cute-ice-cream guy-the ride was a pleasurable kind of crazy!
*Honorable mention totally goes to Sydney’s bestie Ally who was absolutely hilarious, had zero filter, and backed her bestie up 100%!
I think every woman needs a Javier at some point in her life!😁😁😁 This was a damn hot read, Harlow!!! I'm still feeling it!!!😂😂😂 I loved Javier and Sidney story, the bad boy and the good girl, the fact that we always find what we need in the most unexpected places. They are so different, but so perfect for each other! Loved it!
Guilty as Charged was a much anticipated read for me. As a huge fan of Harlow’s Emerson Falls Series, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her latest, standalone book. Could I fall in love with her latest couple the same way I fell for her past ones? The answer is absolutely! Harlow James did not disappoint.
On the outside Javier is the quintessential bad boy, on the inside he's confused, broken, alone. A moment can change your life and a moment changed his. One decision forever changing his world. Javi is like a puzzle, there are lots of interconnected pieces that when looked at separately are baffling, oftentimes confusing, once the puzzle is complete - the last piece inserted, the big picture becomes clear and what a revelation it is. Javi is not bad. He is not broken. He is not immune. He is standing in a vortex of emotions and (self) judgement and what he needs is her.
Sydney is a beautiful mess. She appears put-together and in control but once you scratch the surface of her perfect world, every scruff, blemish and hiccup comes to light. There is so much going on that is out of her control - she is barely keeping her head above water. Her determination to control the narrative of her life sets her on course to make the changes necessary to be her own person and puts her directly in Javier’s path.
These two are polar opposites but they work. I swear to all the book loving Gods, I saw sparks fly out of my Kindle as the sexual chemistry these two share heated up the page. But what makes their connection hot is that their off the charts chemistry is not just limited to their sexy naked times. Every glance, touch, conversation and or text message is filled with complicated feelings and emotions.
Watching them go from enemies to lovers, friends with benefits, to hopelessly and utterly head over heels in love, makes this latest book by Harlow James a Five Star Read. Their happily ever after is sexy - sweet and ever - so - satisfying. Guilty as Charged gets the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval - TBR and Enjoy.
"I love you for not only what you are, but for who I am when I am with you."
This was my first book by Harlow James and I enjoyed this romance between Sydney and Javi. This is an opposites attract romance between privileged Sidney and rough around the edges Javi. They both went to school together but then their life took drastic turns. Sidney has led a sheltered but comfortable life and is tired of trying to live up to the expectations that have been placed on her. Javi got a raw deal based on circumstances out of his control but definitely is actually a caring and protective hero. These two initially rub each other the wrong way, but it isn't long before the sparks ignite between them. These two definitely have chemistry together (their scenes are very steamy) as they fall for each other in spite of their initial dislike. I appreciated that Sidney was willing to fight for Javi and that they wouldn't let their circumstances (including family) stand in their way.
Javier Montes is just trying to get his life back on track after his release from prison. Not many know the really story of how he ended up there, nor does he volunteer it. He’s just trying to keep his head down and get back to a somewhat normal life. However when Sydney Matthews runs into him, all he sees is the popular girl from high school. She was everything he wasn’t, and after she spills a drink on his pants, he hopes their run in was a one-time thing, how wrong he was.
Sydney Matthews is trying to take back some of the control that was taken from her. She signs up for self-defense classes and who is teaching them but the bad boy from high school. They didn’t run in the same crowds, but there is something about Javier now that she can’t ignore. No matter how hard they try to fight it, their attraction is growing until it becomes too much to contain. They agree to a friends with benefits relationship, but when feelings start to filter in, will it stay that way?
Absolutely loved this story. I fell in love with Harlow James’ writing with her Emerson Falls series, and while this book is different from that series, it’s still innately the same too. I love the plot, and the characters and just everything. It’s not your typical romance and I think that’s why I love it so much. It’s a little rougher and dirty and Javier may act like the bad-boy but he is the sweetest. I honestly think he’s my favorite hero of Harlow’s.
Please know that this story does have a trigger warning, so be prepared for that going in, but it really is a fantastic story about love and redemption.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
A new standalone from Harlow James is here and the minute I was able to, I dove in and couldn't put this book down at all. Javier and Sydney are a beautiful story of looking beyond what you think you know to see someone. Each from the opposite side of the tracks, these two forge a powerful and beautiful romance that will keep you turning the page.
Javier is the type of guy that anyone would fall for. He's the epitome of a bad boy, but underneath that facade is a man that is protective and loving. You can't help but fall for him. Sydney's family issues are totally relatable to me and I felt myself rooting for her and cheering her on every time she finally stood up for herself and who she was.
Harlow created something that had me crying, laughing, and yelling at my kindle because I was that invested in the story she created. I instantly connected to the characters, becoming part of their journey as they navigated it. Harlow's attention to detail created a world that became like a movie in my mind as I watched it all unfold in front of me.
With heartfelt issues, family drama, and a bestie that had me wishing I had a girl like her in my life, this book was book hangover material from start to finish.
Four stars for this rough around the edges book that will fill your heart and have you begging for more of Sydney and Javier by the time you reach the final page.
Harlow James writes a beautiful story. Opposites attract, enemies to lovers. Sydney is the model daughter and lawyer in a small town. Javier is the guy who grew up on the other side of the tracks and was just released from prison.
The chemistry between this unlikely couple is SO steamy. I loved that they both had emotional growth through the pages and that they fit together to make the other stronger.
Pro order this book or set your calendar for October 3! Thanks Harlow for the ARC in return for an honest review :)
So I have adored every book I have read by Harlow James and this is no exception! Let me tell you, we are no longer in Emerson Falls people! This is a departure from those stories but no less amazing. This is an enemies to lovers story around Javi and Sydney. They knew each other in high school but never ran in the same circles as Javi came from the "wrong side" of the tracks. When she literally runs into him one night while out having fun the sparks start to fly. What starts as hate turns to a friends with benefits scenario which turns into their HEA. PLEASE, if you love the Emerson Falls series or any books by this author do yourself a favor and read this one!
Love love love the direction Harlow decided to take with this one. It’s rough around the edges, down and dirty, and HOT! 🔥 I read this book in one sitting. I could not put it down! Harlow always writes the best heroines. I feel like I say this with every book she’s written, but it is so true!! Sydney is strong, unwavering and doesn’t back down when she sets her heart on something. In the beginning, she struggled with what she wanted and what was expected of her. But her character development was great! I have so much respect for her character. Javier is not your typical broody, mysterious hero. He has a past and things he regrets and things he would do again in a second, regardless of consequences. He has a heart of gold and is fiercely loyal to his family. His and Sydney’s chemistry is so incredibly written. Their connection is so intense & deep. Sydney is willing to sacrifice so much for Javier because she can’t imagine life without him and though it takes a while for Javier to realize his worth, their love outweighs the fear of failure. Every secondary character had a purpose throughout this story and were absolutely necessary. I love Selena and Andre. As well as Ally! And thought George plays the ‘villain’ most of the book, I appreciated his character development.
I really enjoyed this story and the uniqueness compared to others Harlow has written!
This book was really different from the authors Emerson Falls series and I really appreciated that she tackled something new, and almost gritty with her subject matter. That being said I felt like something was missing? Maybe it was the lack of romantic connection between Javier and Sydney. They definitely had a lot of sexual chemistry, but they just didn't spend any time outside of the bedroom, so I wished their actual relationship was developed more. And I was salty that Javier went to prison in the first place.
That being said though, I did love the characters. Javier was this tough guy who was really a softie, and Sydney was trying to piece her life back together after a horrifying event. These two had plenty of potential, but I felt like they fell just short of being really great.
That's just my own opinion, but that being said I still adore this author!! If you're needing something new to try, this is it!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions.**
Guilty As Charged is a steamy romance which is rough on the edges and soft to the core. That's also how I would describe the main character Javi. He's an ex-convict with a baggage as big as Texas, and he can't seem to move on from his past. His insecurity and guilt keep gnawing at him until he meets Sydney. The woman has been living on her own personal cell, the one built up by her family's expectations and more specifically her father.
However, together, Javi and Sydney, that everything seems to oppose will eventually free each other from their respective ghosts and chains with the power of true love.
Harlow James was up for a challenge with this book, as it covers many thorny subjects such as criminality, rape and diversity with some kinky spice to top it all.
It's a risqué cocktail, but once again, the author proves that she can perfectly write any genre! I can't wait to see what she has up her sleeve next!
A proverbial "wrong side of the tracks" romance, and oh so much more.
This contemporary romance has so much misunderstanding, so much faith, so much heat. Simplified, the premise is this: a young woman under the thumb of everyone wants to be bold and in control. She just needs to find a man who can let her do so.
Enter Javi, who is effing delicious. Their connection is primal and raw and so damn satisfying. So is their growth individually and as a couple.
I loved the side characters, settings, and how everything came together in the end. And I LOVE that we have a woman asking for what she wants. Bless the men who let us do that, the women brave enough to do so, and the authors and books who celebrate that freedom.
Harlow James loves to write a STEAMY love story. But what she also includes in her books is a raw love story that shows character growth and depth. In Guilty as Charged, Sydney & Javier come from different sides of the town’s tracks and have created an idea of who each is before really getting to know one another. A few years ago, Javi made a decision to protect his sister & is now working hard to move on from his past. Sydney is a lawyer trying to find her way in life on her own, while also trying to live up to all of the expectations of her family. On a rare night out, Sydney literally runs into Javier & doesn’t make the best impression. A couple of nights later, she begins a self-defense class coincidentally taught by Javi himself. They dance around their attraction until Sydney speaks her mind & they begin a friends with benefits relationship. Of course that’s not enough for either of them and the rest of the story is about how they find more from each other, when they didn’t know that’s what they really wanted. How they overcome everyday obstacles including communication, family issues, & fear of a real relationship. While very different from the Emerson Falls series, still very classic Harlow. This book is out October 3rd!!
This is the first book by Harlow James that I’ve read and it won’t be the last. I really loved Javier the hero. He wasn’t rich or powerful but a hardworking honourably flawed male. Sydney the FMC had a privileged upbringing but she was no snob and her relationship with Javier was real and transcended monetary values and racial divides. A great story and very well written
Wow was this book a steamy read! I finished it a few days ago and I'm still kind of missing Sydney and Javier. This book has some danger, drama, heart, and a lot of heat.
Javier was recently released from prison but is working hard to get his life back on track. Sydney is a lawyer who comes from a rich family. Even though they come from different worlds, the sparks fly between these two. Their chemistry was off the charts. What starts off as friends with benefits, turns into something more.
I loved how Javier was protective towards the people he cares about. I was proud of the way Sydney learned to stand up for herself and fight for what she wants. Both characters exhibited a lot of growth throughout this book.
Thank you Harlow James for allowing me to read and review an advanced copy. This book will be released October 3.
This book starts off with javi defending his baby sister and landing himself in jail trying to save her pride . Once he is released it's time to rebuild which takes javier awhile to do as he realizes life is hard with a record.
So his sister Selena takes him out to a honky tonk for a night of fun.. Then sydney comes spilling back into his life and the tension these two created was a good build up.
Sydney and Javi are both dealing with hang ups in their life one a criminal background the other a helicopter step dad .
But at 28 sydney is ready to make her desires the priority..so get ready to ride the rollercoaster sydney and Javi take you on ..
I think a few highlights in this book for me where ALLY and literally every scene she was in.
Home depot scene 🔥
And the fact sydney is an empowered woman who didn't need a knight and shining armour ...
Javier and Sydney are fire!! This book has everything! Enemies to lovers, heat, criminal injustice, two lovers from opposite sides of the Tracks. I loved thos book! Harlow James just gets better and better!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ *ARC provided for an honest review* For OG readers: this book offers a different flavor from the Emerson Falls series. However, Harlow James still delivers her signature sizzling chemistry!🔥🔥🔥 For new readers: buckle up because you’re going to explore enemies to lovers in a small town-Harlow James style, suspense, and palpable lust. Let’s not forget the sassy best friend and sister delivering healthy doses of laughter and kick ass girl’s time “counseling”! This is a must read book!
I was given this book by the author for an honest review!!
Harlow you have done it again!! This book was AMAZING!!! It may even be my favourite book of yours and you know how much I adored Emerson Falls.
This book has everything in it
❤ Enemies to lovers ❤ Second chance ❤ Ex con ❤ Angst ❤ Steamy sex scenes ❤ Romance ❤ Strong friend group ❤ Overbearing father
Sydney first banged (literally) into Javi while very drunk at a honky tonk, a place where Javi had been dragged to by his sister. She had his best interests at heart but it was not a place he wanted to be. His initial reaction to Sydney was one of hate as it turns out he remembered her from school where she was a bit of a 'princess'. I am going to say that one day he is going to thank his sister for dragging him here.
Fast forward a few days and guess who appears at the self defense class he is taking at the gym? Yep its Sydney and to say both are shocked is an understatement, man does he work her hard just to annoy her but she doesn't back off in the slightest.
One thing leads to another and this pair are crossing lines that they shouldn't but neither of them have any regrets, the only thing they have is a whole lot of sexual tension.
This book covers so many different things, there are twists and turns and it will keep you wanting more. The one thing it teaches you is it doesn't matter where you come from, how much you earn, who your father is, what your job is, what the colour of your skin is or even if you have a bad past. What matters is simply 2 people that love each other and want to be together, that is what it boils down to, nothing else matters.
I loved the heart of this book, all of the characters were amazing and I loved each and every one of them as an individual. Harlow your characters no matter the storyline are always honest and loyal with a huge amount of respect for one another and I always love that about your books.
** Trigger warning ** There is an attack and also memories of a rape that we are told about.
Harlow thank you for the chance to read this book, it is always a pleasure ❤
❤ Enemies to lovers ❤ Second chance ❤ Ex con ❤ Angst ❤ Steamy sex scenes ❤ Romance ❤ Strong friend group ❤ Overbearing father
Guilty As Charged by Harlow James Rating - 4.5 🌟
“You love me, don’t you, Javi?” And I answer her the same way I always do when she asks me. “Guilty as charged, Princess.”
This was a story with all the feels you can imagine in it! I loved it so much! Javier Montes went to jail for 2 years for asaulting another man. Once he is out he carries this inside of him, even though he is trying to rebuild his life, he feels that because of it he isn't deserving of a second chance at happiness or love. He is half Puerto Rican as he sees it from the wrong side of the town. And he is such a good man and hard-working devoted with a great heart and we'll defend his family to death, but his insecurities are holding him back from a happy future with his soul mate! Sydney Mathews is a lawyer, and from the other side of town the rich one. She is so frustrated with her dad, he is trying to get her to marry a man she doesn't love. Daddy dear is a judge and doesn't know when to let things go, and let Syd make her own decisions regarding the man she needs. She unfortunately hasn't found the one yet! Sydney is out at a bar one night letting loose with her friend, and stumbles right into Javier sparks fly and the journey to HEA start there. Ooh the bantering and anger is sooooo good in-between these two. Their relationship starts off as a hot sexy physical one at first, but feelings and hearts start getting involved after a while, and things get serious pretty quickly. Will Javier let his insecurities get in the way? There's definitely a bumpy road for these two, but there's light at the end of the tunnel for them! Beautiful storyline with serious topics that are actually part of our real world! Everyone deserves a second chance in life, if they are like Javier! The Monte family is lovely I love them all, the Mathews awww not so much at first!!! This story ends with a beautiful epilogue just like I like them too....thank you! I highly recommend this book!
ARC given by Author My review is given voluntarily
Opposites attract for Sydney and Javier who attended high school together but did not travel in the same circles, and meet again as adults under unusual circumstances. She’s a beautiful, privileged, attorney who happens to be the daughter of a judge, and Javi’s not only from another culture, but also from the “other” side of town.
He’s loyal, family oriented, and protective, but judges himself harshly not feeling worthy of love. Little by little, he lets down his guard and lets her in, and it’s so fun to watch their relationship progress. He really has no choice because Sydney is so strong, sassy, and persistent, and even though they started out as enemies to friends with benefits, he is totally smitten.
Javier went to prison for a crime he did commit, but with good reason. His pride gives him a longer sentence than he would have received had he disclosed the truth, but at the time it seemed like the right thing to do. All will be explained, and I don’t want to give too much away as the theme of what happened to his sister is integral to the storyline, especially how everything comes full circle in the end. The author writes these scenes with much sensitivity, and does not go into detail about the crime, but those with assault/rape triggers should be warned.
Javier is hardworking and determined to start a new life working in construction as well as volunteering as a self-defense instructor in his brother-in-law’s gym. It is there where he sees our heroine and knows he needs to be professional. Sydney is there for a reason, and is so strong and resilient, and I admired her so much. She fought for her independence and sought help when needed. She is wise with an honest pure heart, and had the constant support and encouragement of her BFF Ally, who was a hoot.
She saw what was in Javier’s heart with no judgments, and accepted him completely even though her father was hypercritical. I loved how honest and upfront she was, and how she affected him. Loved how he reflected on her words and his past actions, and how she gave him confidence and made him a better man. They were unstoppable together, and I cheered when they conspired to bring a violent criminal to justice.
This was a very angsty, emotional drama with lots of character growth and humor tossed in, and I encourage you to give this expertly crafted standalone, Guilt as Charged, by Harlow James a chance. It’s a deviation from her sweet small town romance series, Emerson Falls, and well worth the read.
Gripping story filled with hope, steam and emotion!
Guilty as Charged is a super sexy and emotional enemies to lovers/opposites attract story about second chances and finding yourself despite having all the odds stacked against you.
This story centers around Javi and Sydney. Javi is trying to re-start his life after getting out of prison. Sydney is trying to take control of her life after a frightening event. Javi & Sydney cross paths and despite fighting their chemistry (and a slight dislike of each other) they can’t stay apart. Yet Javi’s past and Sydney’s family expectations are daunting roadblocks that they need to overcome.
As I said, this book deals with deep issues. Javi has a past.....will that define him forever? Sydney is the perfect daughter...will she cave to what her family wants even if it won’t make her happy? We also have to come to terms with how we see Javi once we know the real reason he went to prison...is he a criminal or a hero? Does his truth redeem him from his crimes? In my opinion Javi is the ultimate underdog hero.
This story had it all. A gripping story about two people who don’t make any sense on paper but are exactly what the other needs. Two people who see the other exactly how they are, faults and all, and love unconditionally and forever.
Javi and Sydney also have insane chemistry. I definitely think this is Harlow’s steamiest story to date. They burn up the sheets...and the kitchen counter...and the wall and a few other places. So hot!
This story is a bit grittier than you may expect from Harlow after the Emerson Falls Series but it definitely illustrates what a great writer she is and how she isn’t afraid to take chances and expand what she writes about. And I so glad to know that she will always deliver stories that she feels so much passion over despite what we may expect.
Overall, I loved the story and I’m glad that Harlow gave me a story that made me think while also giving me all the steam and feels that I could want. This is definitely a 5+ star read for me.
Guilty as Charged is a steamy, enemies to lovers romance with unexpected emotion and grittiness that I loved. Sydney Matthews was the popular girl whose life seemed to be perfect, but inside, Sydney was anxious and afraid to fail her family. Javier Montes was the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. He had just gotten out of prison and was trying to rebuild his life. These two seemed like they were complete opposites, but they kept running into each other everywhere and began to spend time together. Are they just friends with benefits or something more?
Sydney was such a relatable heroine. She loved her family even though they annoyed her and made her feel like she didn’t know what was best for her life. She loved her crazy best friend and getting together for wine nights. She was feeling restless with her life like something was missing and also a little fearful after being attacked one night. When she begins seeing Javier, it’s like something lets loose her in her and she begins to truly live. He opened up a whole other world to her and I loved watching her bloom and stand up for herself.
Javier was such a strong, alpha male. I loved his protectiveness towards anyone he cared about. Even though he shouldn’t have gone to prison, he struggled with feelings of self-worth and guilt and it was heartbreaking. I loved watching him grow throughout the book and realize that he deserved happiness.
In addition, Javier and Sydney are HOT! Their chemistry is combustible.
I wasn’t expecting this book to be as emotional as it was and I loved it. Angst is my jam so I was here for all of it. If you love a book that is steamy, has witty banter, heartfelt emotions, family drama, and character growth, I’d recommend Guilty as Charged. It will keep you glued to the pages.
