The Understanding the Bible Commentary Series helps any reader navigate the strange and sometimes intimidating literary terrain of the Bible. These accessible volumes break down the barriers between the ancient and modern worlds so that the power and meaning of the biblical texts become transparent to contemporary readers. The contributors tackle the task of interpretation using the full range of critical methodologies and practices, yet they do so as people of faith who hold the text in the highest regard. Pastors, teachers, and lay people alike will cherish the easily understandable truth found in this commentary series.
A very good 1-stop shop for an in-depth but not overwhelming commentary on the Psalms. It goes in depth just enough for the non-technical student of the Bible (i.e. me) to appreciate elements that require a scholar's nose.
(really a 4.5) I have really enjoyed reading through this commentary for class, and will come back to it in my own reading of the psalms. The background on ancient near eastern cultures is helpful to my understanding, as well as connecting it to the broader redemptive story and beyond.
Very good comprehensive commentary on the book of Psalms, in depth, relevant historical insights. Highly recommend for anyone who wants a much deeper study of the Psalms
If you are looking for a cost-effective, single-volume commentary on the entirety of the psalter, then this is a decent choice. Craig Broyles basically provides a very basic interpretation of each Psalm. Of course, due to the length of this text, it lacks some of the depth and detail that is offered in larger, multi-volume commentaries on Psalms. I do not agree with Broyles on all of his interpretive choices, but this is, nonetheless, a good place to start. If you are looking for something more in depth, I would highly recommend the Word Biblical Commentary set by Craigie, Tate, and Allen - but this set will set you back about $100.
