I had to find an alphabet book in the first week of the semester to complete an assignment for my teaching degree. This one was available at the baby boutique where I work. The cover is very cute, so I got it. Unfortunately it was horrible. 3 pictures of the same girl with long brown hair, 1 of a boy, 1 of a girl with a blonde updo (she's the queen for Q) and all of them Caucasian. The only other human is the stereotypically dressed Eskimo of Unclear Gender hiding behind the igloo for I. Some animals were drawn realistically enough to be recognized (elephant, octopus, jellyfish), but others were just blobs or fanciful shapes (goat, penguin, butterfly), why? Some pages had alternate letter-objects (ants included in the picture of the apple for A, the penguin is carrying a pail) and others did not, why the inconsistency? I liked the very realistic paintings of the violin and the xylophone, and the zebra is set within a recognizably African landscape, but these are the exception to the rule. I really like more realism in children's art. And the fact that all the animals and all the children have the same black button eyes and black half-circles for mouths might look cute at first glance but gets annoying on the second read-through. Not a good attempt.
