Sparrowhawk (1990) by Thomas Easton.

The next wave of innovation comes with the Biological Revolution, which sees genetically engineered animals and plants taking the place of machines. _Sparrowhawk_ is a police procedural science fiction novel set in 2044. Overall, the story's interesting, but frankly, I could have done without the stereotypical soap opera interaction between the various characters. Nonetheless, I plan on reading at least the next two books in the series.

I first read this story serialized in Analog, and it definitely helped to set me on the path of my aborted career in genetic engineering. I would totally live in the world of these books. Or maybe just visit.
