Where Love Grows was a book I was looking forward to but sad to get at the same time. I knew this was the last book in the series and, like with all of Mr. Eicher's series, I have come to love the characters. This book brought the series to a wonderful conclusion and I was happy to see everything resolved.
In this book we actually get 2 stories, the long awaited wedding of Teresa, Susan's Englisha friend, and the ups and downs of Susan's relationship with her old boyfriend Thomas and the decisions she makes. Add to that a long hidden secret of Susan's father and you have a book that will keep you turning pages well into the night.
I look forward to the next book and series from Mr. Eicher. All of his books are well written and easy to relate to. Thank you Mr. Eicher for a great series and a conclusion that answered all the questions.
Where Love Grows – A Great Ending to a Great Series!
The story continues with Susan Hostetler coming home from the Englisha’s world to help her friend Teresa adjust to Amish life. Susan isn’t sure that she will be staying. Undecided to what she wants to do she tries to make the best of being at home again. Oh how good it feels for her to be home. Thomas Stoll the boyfriend that broke her heart and sent her fleeing into the Englisha’s world to begin with, tries to win her back. Will he succeed in doing so? Does Susan want him back?
Since Susan has been away her Dad hired Steve Mast to help him with the farming chores. Steve seems like a pretty good guy to Susan but she isn’t interested in him to say the least. Will something happen to make Susan change her mind about Steve?
We find some twists in this story. It seems as though Susan’s Dad has been hiding a secret for many, many years. Will this secret come out? If it does, how will this affect the Hostetler family? Can we ever hide our sins completely even if we have confessed them to God?
I took away from this wonderful book that you can not hang on to things of the past in order to move on with your life. We must seek to forgive those who have wronged us and hurt us. We must learn to trust again. With God All Things Are Possible!
I could not put this book down. It was a good read from page one. I simply loved The Fields of Home Series. I do believe it will be one of my favorites. I can’t wait to see what the author will publish next.
I wish to thank Harvest House Publishers and Jerry Eicher for providing me with this book to read and review. The opinions expressed are mine alone.
Where Love Grows is the third book in Jerry Eicher’s “Fields of Home” trilogy. I enjoyed the first two books, and have been looking forward to the rest of the story.
Susan Hostetler’s English friend, Teresa, who joined the Amish community in the second book of this trilogy, is marrying a man she truly loves. Susan is happy things have worked out so well for Teresa, but what about her own life? The suitor who once cheated on her seems sincere, but can he be trusted? Sometimes she wishes he could be more like Steve, her father’s new hired hand.
And then there’s the secret her father has shared with the family. When the secret is confessed to the church, Susan’s parents must suffer the consequences by being put under the bann for a time. Will this be the last straw that pushes Susan back to the English world she flirted with in the first book of the trilogy?
Jerry Eicher interprets hard issues facing the Amish church for his readers with grace and sensitivity. The issue of the bann, or excommunication, has always been a difficult one within the Amish community and nearly impossible for those of us outside the church to understand. As Susan wrestles with what her parents are going through, she is able to come to a greater understanding of what it means for her own faith, and we, as readers, wrestle right along with her.
Jerry Eicher remains unique among writers of Amish books in his insider’s view of this fascinating culture, but that’s not the only reason to enjoy his books. He weaves a story that never fails to please!
I was provided with a complementary copy of this book by the publisher for my unbiased review
I received this book over the weekend from Harvest House Publishers. I am not being paid for my review.
'Where Love Grows' is the third and final book in the 'Fields of Home' trilogy by author Jerry Eicher. This book continues the story of Teresa and Susan. Theresa is finally getting married to her Amish boyfriend and starting a life with him. Susan is trying to forgive her boyfriend, Thomas, and is hoping they soon will be married.
This story also deals with Menno Hostetler, Susan's daett, and his past which is becoming his present. I don't want to tell too much. You will just have to go out and buy the book and read it for yourself. You will be glad you did.
I liked the story and I am glad we finally got to the conclusion of Susan’s story. I loved that she found someone to love her in a way she should be loved. Thomas was still up to his old tricks and finally broke things off with Susan. I honestly did not like how the Amish community handled Mennos past sin. I felt it made the Amish very works based. They do have grace but not in the same way we do in our church community. They showed more grace to others then they did to Menno. There were many characters to try and keep straight and I found that hard but the Amish have large families. I don’t know much of the Amish so I’m not sure how factual things were. If you like Amish romance then you will like the end of this trilogy, but to understand make sure you read books one and two.
Teresa has made it! She is now a baptized member of the community as well as having found true love and a father to adopt her son. Meanwhile, Susan is still struggling with her love life, although she has one serious suitor. Problem is that she won’t open her heart to love. She finally ‘grows up’ and moves on especially when s secret of more than forty years is found out (involving her dad on his rumspringa). I like how Susan stuck by her parents in their time of trouble. Because she did not focus on herself she was quite surprised when she realized that she had fallen in love and it was truly reciprocated.
Susan parents need someone to work the fields, and hires Steve. Teresa and James are planning their wedding. A new love for Susan hopefully one that is mature and wanting marriage and to work the land. The author tied the main characters together with happy ending. Good series into an ?Amish way if life.
Alright, I'm starting to get into the Amish Fiction that my mother reads, but not nearly as much as she is. I decided to give this book a shot because it sounded good. I was a bit confused by the story, though. What I failed to realize is that this is the third in a series, but I did manage to figure out the majority of what I had missed in the previous books, which is a good thing for a series.
The premise of the story is that Susan Hostetler had a falling out with her boyfriend, left the Amish community to go to the English world. While in the English world, Susan gets her drivers license, her GED, a job and an English boyfriend. She also met Teresa, an unmarried woman who is expecting a baby. Teresa wants nothing more than to have her baby raised by an Amish family. Susan moves home and takes Teresa with her to help her make that dream a reality. Teresa becomes a part of the Amish community herself and finds love. That's where Where Love Grows picks up the story. Teresa is about to marry James, the son of Deacon Ray, and have her Amish life.
A few days prior to Teresa's wedding, Menno Hostetler receives a letter from an English woman that he had been involved with and impregnated during his Alternative Service when he was young. He had been under the impression for 40 years that the baby had been lost, but was stunned to learn that the baby had survived and had bene adopetd out. Carol was dying of cancer and left her diary to Donald, her son with Menno. Donald pieced together the information about Menno and showed up at the farm the same day Menno had decided to write and mail him a letter.
While this seems like no big deal to many, the Amish have a different view. Menno goes and confesses his sin, admitting to having had relations with an English woman but believed the child had not survived. Unfortunately, Menno had to be punished and his wife chose to be punished with him, despite not knowing until the letter came. They were placed on a 6 week bann. During the time of the bann, the hired hand, Steve Mast gets closer to Susan. Susan has broken up with her boyfriend, Thomas, because he was openly flirting with another girl at the wedding and this time it is over for good. Without realizing at first, Susan's feelings for Steve grow until she can't deny it.
This is a great conclusion to the series. I'm thinking of going back to read the previous installments, just because I want more of the backstory. I found Susan to be a bit annoying in the beginning and very self-centered, which isn't how an Amish girl generally behaves. Part of the reason I found her annoying is becuse I didn't understand what she had been through. I loved the way all of the storylines were handled, twined together and wrapped up in the end. I was happy that Susan found love with someone who loved her and not with someone who only really was interested in her family farm. I was hoping that there would be more to Teresa and James' story. Perhaps there will be in another series of books.
*Note: I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion from NetGalley*
Susan has returned home, still not sure if she wants to stay and give Thomas another chance or if she'll return to 'the world' as Steve the hired hand calls it. Teresa, the reason she returned to her Amish home, has fallen in love and will soon be married and Teresa's son, Samuel, will have a real daedt. Teresa keeps trying to convince Susan to give Thomas his second chance, so she's been trying.
About a week before Teresa's wedding, who has become like an adopted member of the Hostetler family, Menno, Susan's dad, gets a letter referring to his past that causes him mixed feelings. The morning of the wedding he tells Anna, his wife, about it but they go on as if nothing is wrong. Although, he is thrilled with the news in the letter, it may cause problems in the Amish community.
When a stranger shows up the day of the wedding then comes again the next morning to talk to Menno, Susan is in shock! Menno and Anna go to Deacon Ray to explain the situation to him and he is not happy. Deacon Ray will need to take this information to the other ministers and decide what to do with it. The next Sunday service would be communion Sunday, the day Menno and Anna will find out if one or both will be placed under the ban.
How is all of this affecting Susan and what will she do with her life now? After seeing Thomas talking to another girl in her own house on Teresa's wedding day, they were alone on the Hostetler couch, it reminds her of why she left the first time and now with what she's found out about her father's past, she's very unsure of things. Will she want to return to Asbury Park or will she stay and work through all of her inner turmoils.
Susan has a lot of things to think about right now in her life and this book shows what strong faith and the support of loved ones can help you get through.
Very enjoyable story, this kept me interested and I read late into the night not putting the book down until I couldn't keep my eyes open. I would encourage those of you that like Amish books to read this series, a continuing story about Susan Hostetler.
I received this book from Harvest House Publishers for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.
We join this ongoing story, Susan Hostetler is happy for her friend Teresa. Teresa had come home with Susan from Asbury Square, when Susan had gone to the city, following a betrayal, but now they are back home with Susan's family and Teresa is getting married, and it seems that Susan and her betraying boyfriend Thomas seems to be patching things up.
However wedding day brings huge changes for Susan and her family. Thomas openly flirts with a new girl and tells Susan it is over, but the biggest shock is the English man who shows up on the day of the wedding. Returning the next day, it is revealed that he is actually Menno Hostetler's son from before his marriage who Menno didn't even know about, until the week before the wedding, when a letter from the mother came. While Menno is happy to have a son, he knows that he will have to pay, probably being placed under the bann.
A roller coaster of emotions and reactions from Susan, and her family makes this a heart-tugging story. I did not particularly relate or sometimes even like the character of Susan. She seemed a bit whiny to me, always seeing the worst in every thing. Her attitude did improve as she entered into a new relationship with the hired man Steve Mast. This book was the third in this series. While it could stand alone, with enough information in the book to help you follow the story, reading the other two books was very helpful for the back story. All in all a story that you will enjoy. 312 pages US 12.99 4 stars
This book was provided for review purposes only. No payment was received for this review.
This is the final book in this series. What an excellent way to end the story. Teresa has found true love and someone to be a Godly father to her son Samuel. This fulfilled her wish to raise her son Amish. Susan on the other hand has given Thomas another chance. Once again he blows it. We learn he was more intersted in Susan's father's farm than in Susan. This turns out okay because Susan is being pursued by another man. The question is will Susan allow herself the luxury of letting someone else into her heart. This book had another conflict that involved a secret that Susan's father had kept for a long time. No I'm not going to tell you what the secret is or how it is resolved. I suggest you read this entire series from begining to end. Jerry writes realistic characters with realistic problems. We see that the Amish have some of the same kinds of problems we have. Often times we set them p on a pedestal and don't really see them as having the same faith based struggles that we do. However, this is not true. They struggle just like you and I do. So I highly recommend you read this series and I also recommend you come back tomorrow for another group of books by Jerry Eicher. I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
Title: WHERE LOVE GROWS Author: Jerry S. Eicher Publisher: Harvest House Books September 2012 ISBN: 978-0736939454 Genre: Amish
Teresa is planning her marriage to James, after completely surrendering to the Amish church, and her future father-in-law has come to grips with his son marrying a formerly Englisha girl who had a baby out of wedlock.
Susan is still struggling to find her place. She has allowed Thomas to come calling again, but there’s another young man in the picture, Steve. Susan is confused about which one might be God’s will for her life.
Also, Susan’s father must confess to a sinful transgression he’s hid for years. Will he be able to face the church discipline and possibly more?
WHERE LOVE GROWS is the third book in Mr. Eicher’s Fields of Home trilogy. Readers will want to read the first two books in the series, Missing Your Smile, and Following Your Heart as these books are not stand alone.
Fans of Mr. Eicher’s books will love Susan. She – and her struggles, as well as the other characters issues – are very real and will tug on reader’s heartstrings. The ending is very sweet – and satisfactory. Good read. Recommended. 4 stars. $12.99. 320 pages.
I love Jerry Eicher's books and have read all but his two newest ones. I recall when I read my first book by him that I was impressed that he has a different way of writing about the Amish. I was also highly impressed that a man could write such wonderful romantic tales! This book is no let down! I had fallen in love with Susan and Teresa in the two previous books: Missing Yous Smile and Following Your Heart. I really like Susan's spunky attitude and her zest for life. She has been hurt by two very significant men in her life and has every reason not to trust again. Yet she goes on and returns to her Amish home with her Englisch friend, Teresa. This is certainly a book about forgiveness and confession. This book gives an in-depth look at the practice of the bann among the Amish and Amish weddings. There was a great deal of sadness as well as joy in the book. I hurt for the characters as they went through the bann. I highly recommend this book to readers. Jerry has once again written a book that makes you stop and think and count your blessings.
This is book three in the Fields of Home Series written by Jerry Eicher. I would recommend reading the others in the series before reading this one. You will get a full understanding of the characters and setting that way and not feel like you are coming into the middle of a story.
I gave this book 4/5 stars. I did not especially enjoy the main character in the story, Susan. I do not like characters that are very dependent on others and feelings to respond to their circumstances. I thought she could have been written with more depth. I liked that the families where forced to face issues that had been hidden in the past. I would recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of the author or who enjoys Amish fictional stories.
I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.
I have read other books by Jerry Eicher & never been disappointed. I read this one on & off in the course of 2 days. The character development was great. I loved the dynamics in the relationships between Teresa & Susan & Menno & Anna & the rest of the family members. In the end Susan after feeling she will never be married ends up with Steven Mast who works on her dad's farm. For Steven it is his first chance at courting. I like the way the book turned out in the end. There were many valuable lessons learned here. I even see Charles & his father Donald having an improved relationship after meeting Donald's birthfather Menno.
When Teresa mother Maurice comes to town you see the way the family blends together for Teresa's wedding. Susan seems to be the one character that is the most unsure of herself but in the end she comes out so strong.
Just finished reading "Where Love Grows" by Jerry S. Eicher. It gets 5 stars from me. This is the 3rd book in the Fields of Home Series. This book starts and ends with a wedding. This story is full of God's goodness and grace and forgiveness. This whole series shows love will come from people and places you least expect. My favorite quote in this book is "mamms( mom ,it is an Amish book)need hugs just like everyone else".this whole series shows that life in the Amish community is not without it's trials and tribulations.
I had read another book by Jerry Eicher and thought it was just okay but I really enjoyed Where Love Grows. We meet Susan after she's back home from her flight into the Englisha world and learn of her struggles. In addition, we get a new perspective with an Englisha girl becoming Amish (something I had never thought of) and her mom visiting her new world. I even enjoyed the story of Susan's father and struggles from his past coming back to haunt him.
I enjoyed this book, as well as the entire "Fields of Home" series. I am looking forward to reading Holding a Tender Heart, the first book in Jerry S. Eicher's new series, "The Beiler Sisters."
I read all The Fields of Home series and loved them all. I was so happy that Teresa found love and happiness for her and her son. Susan finds love again with Steve! God always has a plan for you and reading this series taught me to always trust God for everything. I laughed and cried along with the characters. I can't wait to read Jerry Eicher's next book!
