When Katy Duck, who loves to dance, meets her new neighbor Ralph, it turns out that he loves rough and tumble games and the two of them must figure out a way to play together.
Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
KATY DUCK MAKES A FRIEND is a practice reader at the beginning First Grade Reading level. It has 258 words on 24 pages. This particular book in the series is Common Core Aligned.
The book begins with Katy having fun with her little brother. They are doing what Katy loves best, and that is dancing. Emmet though is little and when he gets tired mom takes him off for a nap. This leaves Katy without anyone to dance with -- until a new neighbor shows up.
Ralph is a dog, and his favorite things are anything that goes fast! Trains, planes and rocket ships... ZOOM!
This leaves the pair in a quandary. They want to play together but how to do something they both enjoy. They think and think and come up with a happy solution.
~ I really like this story. The lesson of compromise and 'brainstorming' to come up with a solution that makes both parties happy is something that can't be emphasized enough. I may even read this with my highschoolers.
KATY DUCK wasn't originally a series I was crazy about but it has grown on me. It's not going to be a practice reader series for every child, but it's worth tracking the books if you have a child or two that likes the drawings, Katy Duck, and who needs some practice reading. There are lessons within the stories that allow for conversation.
Dancing diva Katy Duck and her new neighbor Ralph must find a way to play together in this all-new Level 1 Ready-to-Read!
When Katy Duck and her family get new neighbors, Katy can hardly wait to show off her dance moves. She is ready to curtsy, twirl and leap! Tra-la-la. Quack, quack! But when Katy’s new neighbor turns out to be a rough-and-tumble boy named Ralph, this dancing duck diva starts to wonder if she and Ralph will ever be able to have fun TOGETHER when their interests are so far apart.
Katy Duck loves playing with her baby brother Emmett, but when he has to take a nap, Katy has no one to play with. She meets Ralph who likes to do different things than she does. A nice book about getting along with people who have different interests than you do.
This was a very good Katy Duck book. She is a 'girly' girl type of duck and loves to dance she wants to keep having fun and dancing with her baby brother, but he has to go take a nap. Katy is sad. BUT the new neighbor kid shows up at the door to play. When Katy sees him he's a dog and he's a boy! He likes cars, trucks, and rockets.... nothing like Katy. She and he are both sad they don't know what to do. They have nothing in common so they think. But after Katy thinks on it she combines her dancing with his running and zooming with his planes. So they are soon running, jumping and playing in the yard having fun. A very charming book to teach children to look beyond what we look like or our gender to everyone's 'inside' and we can always have fun if we just try.
Nothing special. Katy Duck, who likes to dance, befriends a dog named Ralph who loves transportation. Apparently they have nothing in common. Finally they decide they can dance around pretending to be airplanes or rockets together.
