Sword and sorcery in the vein of Robert E. Howard's Conan. Caddoc is the Conanesque warrior in this story. He's big and strong and brawling, though not as cunning as Conan, and quite a bit less wise in the ways of women. He falls head over heels for a beautiful barmaid and agrees to steal a gem for her from a sorcerer after she promises her love in return. Caddoc gets the jewel but things don't go as planned and he ends up forming an unlikely alliance with a demon who is trapped in the body of a young boy and a priest whose temple has been burned to save the maid from raiders who have captured her. I won't say more about the plot so as not to give things away. Some interesting creatures in this one and a lot of action. This is somewhere between standard novella length and a short novel. I enjoyed it as a quick read.

HELLFIGHTER, a new novella by David T. Wilbanks, is an unabashed, high-fantasy adventure filled with action, monstrous creatures and humor from e-publisher Acid Grave Press. The story centers around Caddoc, a mace-yielding adventurer who loves drinking, fighting and carousing. Falling for a barkeeper's beautiful daughter, he takes an... unconventional approach to woo her, but she rejects him. Caddoc isn't one to give up easily however, so he asks what he can do to win her affections. She tells him she would give herself to him if he can bring her a green gem held by a dangerous soul-stealing wizard. He agrees and embarks on the quest. Along the way he gains allies. A stealthy young street urchin, a dispossessed demon and a noble priest all lend their aid to Caddoc along the way. Each plays an important role and have real motivations for risking their lives to assist the brash stranger.

As the adventure continues, Caddoc and his crew find themselves dragged through demonic dimensions and the heart of the evil Drakuli empire. During their time in the demonic realm, the demons are described in all their hideous glory. A warning to those offended by descriptions of sex and bloody violence, this is a take-no-prisoners tale from which nothing is shied away.

I enjoyed HELLFIGHTER. It's an exciting, quick read that's difficult to put down, and a steal at $2.99 (Kindle version) from Amazon.

I'll admit that I'm not a sword-and-sorcery connoisseur. However, I'll check out more in the genre after reading this little book. This book has a little of everything in it, and it was not at all what I expected for sword-and-sorcery. There's stuff in here that will appeal to horror readers and action fans. The book is a quick read, and I couldn't put it down while reading it poolside during vacation. If you want a fun, quick read that will entertain you, make sure you check this one out.

That's $3 and an hour of my life I'll never get back.

I'd be absolutely floored to find out that this wasn't a failed NANOWRIMO attempt.

True love and demon-spider handjobs... yeah... ok.

Can't remember who exactly recommended this one to me, but it certainly warrants some vengeance. A M-80 in the mailbox, or at least a fat lip...

Come to think of it, maybe they were trying to get back at me. It all makes a lot more sense now, you bastard.
