This was in a pile of books making their way out of the house when S brought it over to read.
John Holt in Learning All the Time says that children’s readers used to be more interesting (how could they not be) but people tried making them simpler by featuring fewer different words at a time and then the children took longer to learn to read as the pay-off decreased so they had to keep making them easier. I can’t remember why he says they tried making them easier to begin with but I do remember this series as a trying hoop to jump through before I was allowed to read anything interesting in school so I think he's on to something .

I thought S would soon realise his mistake but he found it hilarious (proper laughing) and immediately asked to have it again. Maybe the problem is that this is the kind of reader that grabs the attention of a 2 year old rather than a 5 year old. I tried following the book’s instruction to point at the words as I read them but I’m not very optimistic - S can tell when I’m ad-libbing and keeps demanding me to ‘READ IT!’ when we’re looking at a book with only pictures. My varied demonstrations of what words look like and how there aren’t any fall on deaf ears.
