This novel looks at a summer of crisis in the family of Sir Guy and Lady Marjorie of Fordingbridge Castle. When Marjorie talks on television about her famous garden, the programme is seen in Poland by her wartime lover who comes to the village and back into her life.
I picked this book up at the train station as I’d left my other book at home ; I’m sure I wouldn’t have read it otherwise. I did enjoy it the characters are interesting though it seems quite dated now but I enjoyed it anyway.
I found this book rather interesting, the ways in which the characters life's connected back to Marjorie was fascinating. There were a few spelling errors which was slightly jarring. I think chloes subplot was the most intriguing, I would have enjoyed to see this being fleshed out more. The ending to all the stories apart from that of the priests and frances felt rushed. While I understand life does not have a clear conclusion it feels as though this book is half of what it should be. As something I picked up of a shelf in an air bnb I was pleasantly surprised.
Quiet lives but floundering relationships. The past secrets from one life begin to ripple outwards and affect family and on outwards. Just as you wonder when the ripples will stop, crises points are reached. A gentle read but compelling to discover where the ripples will end (if they ever do) and how resolution will be reached for some.
