This is a charming retelling of the traditional folktale, perfectly matched with witty illustrations by Fred Blunt. Rabbit's burrow is far too small so he goes to Wise Owl for advice. But is Owl serious when he tells Rabbit to invite all his friends and family to stay It includes easy-to-read text, with fun comprehension puzzles at the end. It is a wonderful addition to the Usborne First Reading series, developed in consultation with Alison Kelly, Principal Lecturer and reading specialist at the University of Roehampton.
From an early age Lynne Benton spent much of her time reading and writing stories. However, for some years writing took a back seat while she taught in primary schools, married and brought up four children, so it was only when they began leaving home for university that she rediscovered her love of writing and began to get her stories published. Now she writes stories for younger children learning to read, as well as longer books for the 8-11 age group. She lives with her husband in Bath, and has recently begun reading her longer books on westwiltsradio.com.
I really liked the illustrations in this book! They were bright and colourful and would interest children of a young age. This book is very similar to Julia Donaldson's "A squash and a squeeze" so I would recommend reading that after reading this book.
A short fun story for children involving rabbits. Our main friend feels his house is too small but wise old owl shows him he is luckier than he initially thought through an interesting lesson. Cute pictures.
Young readers are sure to spot the parallels between this story and the Julia Donaldson book ' A squash and a squeeze' making this a great resource for comparing/contrasting stories and discussing folk tales as well as being a nice early shared reading option (suitable from age 5+).
