I picked up this book several years ago on a trip to Mammoth with my wife. At the time, I thought we might spend more getaways vacationing in this part of the state, but we both agreed we like trips up the California coast better. In these days of the Covid shutdown fun to do some armchair travelling. I have visited several places listed in the book, including Lake Tahoe, Bishop, and many sights listed in the first part of the book. The title is a little of a misnomer--it really doesn't start in Los Angeles, but with the Antelope Valley portion of the Mojave Desert where I live. Many maps, black and white photos, local history and geological descriptions fill the book. Most of the places of interest are mining or ranching related. If you're interested in exploring this part of California, this is a good resource to take a look at.
