This classic is the definitive book written about Dr. Deming and his work. The author and Dr. Deming were friends and colleagues who worked together to be sure that readers would clearly understand the principles and philosophy developed and taught by Dr. Deming over the course of a half century. The book begins with a first-rate historical perspective and then goes on to explain the basic tenets of the Deming philosophy, including such topics as The Fourteen Points, The Deadly Diseases, The Obstacles, and the System of Profound Knowledge (updated shortly before Deming's death in 1993). Dr. Neave has powerfully communicated both the message and its importance to the business world of today
Henry Neave takes it upon himself to explain the Deming philosophy. He does this with great understanding and covers the subject in detail, providing a broad insight into Deming’s thinking.
Unfortunately, the book assumes a reasonable level of background knowledge and sometimes leaves the reader wondering, “Why is that?” as it skips from one idea or concept to another without explaining the rationale and logical links in depth.
Written in the 1990s, the book relies heavily on manufacturing examples to explain much of Deming’s philosophy. If you stretch your mind, it is easy enough to see how relevant Deming’s thinking was to service industries, but doing so requires effort, so dismissing the ideas as irrelevant to today’s (service) economy is a bit too easy. That is a shame.
It is an interesting read for those who are already Deming converts and are prepared to put in the effort, but ultimately, it no longer stands out as an introduction for newbies to the subject.
Things still get made and moved by people. Processes are still executed by people. Deming's ideas are as relevant today as they were when he and the others were developing them in the mid-twentieth century.
This is a mind-opening read for those who use statistical process controls, mind-blowing for the rest of us. If you are from America or some other place where most people run away from math in fear, you need this book. It connects the math to the human without resorting to math which is pretty brilliant, and it puts the idea in your head that you do not need to be a PhD in stats or math to use statistical methods yourself.
Really good analysis of corrections that need to be made in manufacturing - but just as applicable to services and other areas of life. I read portions for a quality class in college, but only just read it all the way through - very dense at times, but highly readable (very understandable style, but not something to read in one sitting).
