A downer of a story, but, wow, what a read! As I was reading this book, I recommended it all over the place. Although the central character, a young woman who we see mature throughout the book, deals with some tragic and horrific experiences, her resilience and sarcasm make you want to keep reading and see her tale to the end. The story deals a lot with how history often repeats itself from generation to generation, no matter how hard we fight against it.

A haunting tale of a girl's progress to womanhood in the American South, hindered by alcoholism, violence and mental illness.
