As if she were involved in a miming play, Marielle watched the two groups clowning and bargaining --gold coins being offered, scorned, accepted....

Only afterward did she learn that she had participated in a Romany wedding. Now, Marielle Moore was a Romany wife obliged to obey her husband--Rom Boro, leader of the gypsy tribe in all things.

"I will not tolerate being bought like an article across a shop counter," she declared angrily. But after all, what could she do? Her life depended on Rom!

(trying to decide if I can stretch it to 2.5 stars...probably not)

I'll have to tell you, this book would've been so much better if the heroine hadn't been in it. She was so egocentric and just plain stupid that I couldn't imagine what the hero ever saw in her. Of course you had the prerequisite non-communicado going on with the hero and the aunt, but even then, this chick couldn't find her way out of a paper bag.

I liked the more gypsy-friendly feel of the story compared to Hampson's Beloved Vagabond. If I could merge the two stories, it would be perfect (seeing that this heroine was totally replaced, that is).

Maybe some people like a ditzy blonde in their Harleys. If you do, then there's KGB, running from the secret police, and an antagonistic gypsy to spice things up as well.

An old favorite of mine. I'd like to find it again to see how well it holds up.

Reread review - So I read this thing when it first came out back in the 70s and have always remembered it. It didn't hold up as well as I would have wished. There was an awful lot of the story that wasn't actually about the relationship between the hero and the heroine. Not that I mind that all that much if it's well written and interesting which sadly was not the case here. Also because it was so old it was very dated. The hero was born during the second world war and a lot of the plot had to do with the cold war and so was not real pertinent. The heroine was a bit of a ninny and you didn't know the hero all that well. It was readable though.

Still, gypsies...so yay!

DNF

Borrowing a friend's passport and going to Poland in the midst of the Cold War?
Stupid!
Thinking no one will notice it because "one blonde is just like the other"?
Stupid!

I couldn't go on reading.
