About the author

Natalia Sheremetyeva was born in a very noble and reach family of field marshal and count Sheremetyev. At the age of 14 she was engaged to a youg man from another noble family - Ivan Dolgorukov. However, after the reign of Peter II ended and empress Anna Ioanovna took the thone, fortune of Dolgorukov family has changed, since Anna Ioanovna's close favorite Ernst Johann von Biron had a grudge against some of the noble families. Dolgorukov's were sent to exile in a faraway village on the island in Perm. Natalia could refuse to marry Ivan and renounce their engagement, however she chose to marry him and endure all the hardships of exile together. She gave birth to and raised two sons. After her husband's death, she had seen to her sons' well being and took the veil in a monastery. There, few years prior to her death, she wrote a memoir about her youth and life in exile.
