Antonia guards the devil. Caelia is his daughter.

Mayor Crassus is the most corrupt man in Black Port. He’s never met a con he didn’t like, or grift he rejected. He’s mercenary, cold-blooded, and ruthless in turns.

In order to better feather his own nest, he’s promised his daughter’s hand to one of the king’s most ruthless inquisitors. Caelia, in whose veins flows the blood of a powerful matriarchal line of witches, knows it would be a fate worse than a death sentence.

Whatever it takes, she must escape.

She turns to Knight Protector Antonia Brocklehurst, her father’s bodyguard – a woman with plenty of secrets of her own.
But Antonia’s mission could save the lives of hundreds. Can she abandon it to save one woman – even if she has loved her for years?

The Devil's Daughter (Knight Protector: Black Wyvern Book 4), my fifty-seventh read from prolific author Rachel Ford. This epic fantasy book is so well-written & enjoyable, no matter the genre a Rachel Ford book can be counted on to be entertaining & enjoyable. The action really ratchets up in this, the 4th book in an outstanding series. I look forward to the next book in the series, Knight's Dawn (Knight Protector: Black Wyvern Book 5) when it’s published in April of next year. I own 62 books from this author. The problem with reading a prolific author like Ford is that you can go from reading the first book in a series in May of 2023 to waiting to read the fifth book in the series that’s not scheduled to be published until April of 2025 and lose track of some of the fine details the author writes into the series. Writing over fifteen series it's possible to lose readers over these extended time frames. I love Ford's writing, some more than others but the reader might be better served if some of the storylines were completed before beginning a new storyline.“I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

The mission or the girl? It shouldn't be a hard choice, right? If only it were that simple.

This is book four of the series. It actually okay as a standalone, but this series is fairly sequential so it will be a better experience if read in order.

This story offers an interesting blend of science and magic, such as energy weapons, elf magic and dragons. The setting is fascinating and we get to another piece of it in this story, which was really nice. Our characters are well developed with solid backgrounds and distinct personalities. Their interactions make the story come alive and provide an occasional bit of humor as well. The plot includes some intrigue and some action which keep things moving. Overall, highly enjoyable and I am definitely looking forward to the next book.

Highly recommended.

First, I love this series and it should definitely be read in order. There are a lot of plot elements and characters to keep track of and it is worth it to read in order and really digest this beautiful world. Dragons and warriors and beautiful women in a steam punk kind of place. This installment was exciting and engrossing. Definitely some surprises! I really want the good guys to win but the bad are so determined. The slow burn romance in this one was beautiful. My only disappointment was the end came to soon and left me on a cliff. I can't wait for the next installment. I received an ARC.

The books are best read in order as there is a background story developing in each installment.
In book 5, Caelia’s father arranges for her to get married to a horrible man named Decius as it will be beneficial for him but alas not for her. Caelia is against the union for various reasons, one of them being she is not what she seems.
It all gets a bit more complex to describe beyond this apart from Caelia meets Antonia, a Knight Protector who isn’t all that she seems either.
As usual the book ends but doesn’t end so roll on book 6.

This is a great addition to a great series. Lots of twists and turns, and familiar and new characters. I was able to follow along pretty easily despite not having read all of the previous books in the series. It does help to have read at least a couple of them so you know who the major characters are. The series is a blend of sci fi and fantasy, with magic and dragons as well as gas engines and a few other modernish contraptions with a little romance, adventure and some mystery blended in. It all adds up to an exciting and absorbing read.

It was an interesting premise and I was looking forward to reading this book. The story had a lot going on, with many characters and with their own storylines. They were interesting storylines and it is a well written book. However, for me, it took too long for us to even get a glimpse of what I'd been looking forward to in the blurb. And even then, it was glimpses too few and far between for me to fully appreciate. The story does come together, though and I'm sure if you've been immersed in this universe and been following the series, you won't be disappointed.

I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book but I took a chance. I am so glad I did! The story sucked me in quickly and I found myself unable to put it down. I enjoyed the characters as well as the world, very unique and refreshing. I loved the dragons and elves. I even liked Gaius and liked that he was in opposition of the inquisitors AND his father. Definitely recommend!

I always love a well-written book, especially when the reading impacts me emotionally. This one had me rolling through a quagmire of emotions. I felt angered, indignant, thrilled, relieved, hopeful, plus some other feelings I'll keep to myself, and then..... it's a cliffhanger.
Bring on the next book!

Very captivating, I’m really looking forward to what comes next. A number of seemingly unrelated characters experiences are documented. Although there is no hint of how they all align you'll get the feeling that they all will at some future point.

Well wriitten but I should have read the previous books. I often felt lost within the story but there were threads that I picked up and did enjoy. Fantasy adventure all the way most definitely.

What an amazing fantasy story. The characters will take you with them into their world. Will Caelia get out of marrying someone she doesn’t want to. Loved it.

I liked it but didn't love it. Definitely still non-stop, action-packed, with the classic softer moments in between to keep it balanced, but I just didn't really care for the story in this one.

I love mafia romances and this is a must! There’s even the use of magic with plenty of twists and turn to keep you reading.
