The first quarter of the book is really solid and drove a lot of the excitement for the story. We get a decent character genesis, with a really interesting premise and a cool sci-fi twist.

The story derails in the next two quarters, where I was left at times thinking if I was reading the same book (of course I was) or if I was reading an unedited version of it (I wasn't).

It seems like the author tried her best to "show, not tell", but took it to such an extreme that left the reader trying to guess on the why/what of what was happening, and as soon as enough exposition took place, we would have a hard pivot that would scramble everything that had been established in the last section.

I was honestly skimming it by the end, but I did see that more care had been taken to finish strong in order to set a solid launch for the second book of the story, although I don't know if I'll be reading it.

The author seems to dislike men greatly, because in the first 2 hours of the book if you were not paying attention the amount of shit this TEEN had to deal with is just a palm facing. Then let's talk about command structure, or the LACK of it or any repercussions what other members do. You don't have any, it's just a wild west of people killing each other when they want to and the author glazing over it like it doesn't matter. This book takes place so far advanced in the future but they don't have simple LOGS or Vids who did what to whom.

I'm 53% through this book, and I'm unsure if I am going to finish it, so take what I am saying with a grain of salt.

This book is a disjointed, jumbled, deliberately obtuse and discombobulated pile of words. There are some points in this where you can almost see a story, you can almost get behind characters, and then... MONKEYS!!... something just swerves and doesn't make sense.

I can see where the author is going. I can see how there's a whole, perhaps, thought out history and arc, but what I can't see is where it is in the book. It's like if you watched Memento, but instead of being backwards and learning what's going on in reverse, the whole movie is just a scene with another nearly entirely random scene after it. And some of those scenes are in a different language. Not like French or Spanish, but a made up language from Dune.

Of course, this is so that there's some mystery, so that you are engaged like in the Sixth Sense the first time you saw it. Unfortunately, this is more like the Village. There can't be a payoff, because you have no clue where you are going. The history is a mystery, but even the parts that are "explained" aren't clear.

I'm hoping that this is all some action of the Memory % or something, but man this is a hard one to get through. I appreciate that someone spent their time on this, and I wish this was more engaging, but I can't recommend it.

IF I do finish this book, and I find it better, I will amend this, but, considering the other reviews, I don't think that will happen.

You know those movies that are 99% special effects glory and 1% logic? This book is like that. Nothing makes sense but before you can even define the boundaries of the nonsense the whole world shifts on its axis. Now you have a whole new set of implausibilities to deal with. It's a hot mess.

Here're some examples;

Chapman is a font of creativity without any attention to detail. Good world-building is not defined by how many amazing features are included but by how well integrated those features are into the lives of the world's inhabitants. For example, if you introduce flying cars, you should also consider the impact on civil infrastructure (will roads still exist?) and architecture (will buildings resemble eyries?)

Not good

This was not what I expected. The story did not make any sense to me, and I lost the storyline fairly quickly. I tried reading on for a few chapters after that but the story was nonsensical to the extreme.

3 stars. Interesting story and interesting ideas but the writing itself wasn't as good as one would hope for.

Holy shit, this had so much promise but ended up so bad...

Some deus ex machina, an adult so horny you would think he's thirteen and bad pacing doesn't make for a good read.

I dropped it a few hours in and won't be revisiting it.

I know for a fact a certain few people will like this novel, but it's not for me.

I'm a huge fan of Sci-fi LitRPG, especially the "space opera" type, so I'm already bias in my opinion here... But I really must say that the was an excellent book with a story that kept me engaged and wanting more. There were (in my opinion) a few areas where the plot could have used some mending together (maybe in the next book?), but I really think that this was an excellent overall story and will make for a great starting point for a series.

I rate this book a solid 5 stars and I hope that there will be future books by this author in this series.

I requested and received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.

Missed opportunity

The story and premise are interesting, but it’s just insanely difficult to read. It reads like it was translated to English, with oddly structured sentences and strange jumps between paragraphs. The “game” text is just one solid block of text with no punctuation that I have to read multiple times to understand at all. I got around 38% of the way in before I just got tired of having to reread chunks and figure out what was happening because the author didn’t explain something well. The story really is neat, so that this is such a pain to actually read is disappointing. It feels rushed in every way.

An awesome gamelit book. I will say they go a little too heavy on the stats for my liking but ignoring that:

The story is great, the characters are fun, the abilities they develop are cool. My favorite thing is the larger conflict going on between the corporations on Earth against the humans and those same corporations against the different alien races. Can't wait to check out the rest of the series.

They even have mechs that join together like in the Power Rangers. It's great.

The first half of the book had me complete addicted. I was already hoping the next in the series would be out soon. Right after I got around the halfway mark something changed. The story became boring. My interest disappeared and the previous excitement died. Overall it was still an ok read, but it had so much potential that first half of the book that I felt let down.

Plot skipping

Whenever an explanation for the world of events came up it seemed like paragraphs were cut. It didn't make sense. There were also many times where the story just changed perspective and left you wondering if you skipped pages.

The stats were nice. Other than having to read the same unchanged skills or abilities over and over which added 20+ pages.

Weirdly disjointed, like there’s bits missing. Leaps from one thing to another without explaining what’s going on. Perhaps this is deliberate. But I didn’t get on with it at all.

Alert

I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.

So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Now, since I have to keep explaining myself to people who don't like my reviews, I guess some clarification is in order.

1. I am 100% against criticism for works of art. Art is subjective, meaning reviews are irrelevant. The observer's opinion is only relevant to the observer. It is my belief that regardless of what others might say, I have to experience the art for myself.

2. I read upwards of 20 books a month. The $10/month I spend on K U, feels like I am cheating the authors. But since I can't afford 20 books a month if I were to purchase them directly, all I can offer is a positive review. That leads us to the final point.

3. If I get to the end of a book, then it was worth my time. I give those books 5 stars because it helps the author get exposure. That is the only reason I write reviews at all.

I understand that people are people and they are going to do what they do regardless of my stance. I know the way that I review books upsets some people. I am sorry they feel that way but as many have said, they will just ignore my review going forward. In fact, if you made it this far through my review, you should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews here. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

Cheers

Audiobook, Chapter 40 of 42 (will edit as needed) – the narrator is good I enjoy Neil Hellegers. The story is carried by the narrator.
The first part of this story is pretty ok, it sets the scene of this kid who has no idea what’s going on and is quickly whisked away into his VR / litrpg / adventure-in-a-new land premise. There’s a bit of action and a bit of deceit…but there’s no clear hint as to what’s going on. There’s a few hints about the Mana mechanism, which is then generously ignored. It seems like a game of smoke’n’mirrors without any pay off.
Then there’s a montage section which seems it would’ve been more exciting than what we’re told. A bit of intrigue and espionage gets glossed over…new players are old players.
Add to this a few confused metaphors, “cut through it with a pencil”. I assume this is supposed to imply a bluntness or something? But it just misses the target and lends more towards being a confused ramble.
The protagonist builds his stats, gets to a point where the story might get interesting and then….reset. New location, back to being a newb and pointed out as much far too often. Yes, we know he’s a newb, find a new noun.
And the gawddamn stat recitations! Sure you don't hear them in the first few chapters, but you really notice them in no time at all. By chapter 40 they take 2 minutes! None of the stats have been explained to a degree where you actually care. It'd be much easier, and better for flow, for the author to just say, oh yeah...level up to so-and-so.
We don’t need these stats so often when F-all has changed.

I paid for the bundle, so that's 4 books for the price of 1...I will give it time in the hope it'll improve. I have them time...I'm a month away from Mother of Learning 2 being released and 2 months away from He Who Fights with Monsters 6...needs must.
So far I am disappointed to have spent money on these books.

TLDR; Excellent premise, poor delivery and a lot of potential in a re-edit. A clunky tale that needs more time in the review process. Listening to this story makes me tired and doesn’t stir me at all.

Feels incomplete

I started this book with high hopes, but as I continued to progresses through the writing I simply became increasingly confused and disappointed.

Let me explain, the world and story both have a lot of good points and could be a very interesting and compelling world to dive into. However, the exposition of the plot and the overall quality of the writing leave something greatly to be desired. This book feels more like a solid first draft or a rough translation from a foreign language instead of a well-polished novel. There are many instances where word choice doesn't make sense, character dialogue often doesn't connect with the audience, and seemingly vital plot points are suddenly introduced with no prelude or build-up.

I would love to see this book with another year or so of work put into it, I feel it would really shine if it had a little more editing and revision.

I like the uniqueness of this book it's something new and different there's nothing else like it which in this genre of book is not the norm. A few pain points for me however every time I start to get used to or start to like a supporting character they split off for a reason that I don't truly understand.

Unfortunately, the book is ladled with a huge amount of Mystery and plot twist and I say unfortunately only because it goes in several directions and at least for me I don't feel like I know or can get attached to the main character or any of The Supporting Cast.

Understand I'm not saying it's not a good book because it is. This book is just unique so going into this book you cannot look at it like any other plotline or storyline that you have read before. If you can do that you will enjoy this book however if you do not like long character stat sheets or you do not like a lot of plot twists you may find it hard to get through this book.

The first 75% was very confusing for me. "What's going on?" was something I was often wondering. I had, and still have, no clue what happend here. Guy gets dropped somewhere, there is some organisation that seems to be evil and there are people against that organisation. Ok, fine that works. But then the details; who's a friend and who's not? I still have some trouble thinking back to the start. When I think that I figured it out, one of the friends goes foe without notice or, imo, reason. What the hell.... I find the setting kinda interesting enough to try the second book, but I do hope that the writing improves and there are less random plot twists, random and without an interlude introductions to important fact and people.

Also, spamming a charactersheet that's 2 pages long on a Kindle Oasis everyother chapter, without changes to it, is very tiresome. The sheet is just to long. And regarding the sheet, please explain what some of the stats do in this universe.

This was a decent space/mech litrpg series that I enjoyed reading. It wasn't absolutely amazing, yet worth reading. I have read the first four books and they are all about the same goodness, so if you like the first, you will like the rest.

If I had to nitpick something, it is the fact that the MC is constantly praised and pushed forward, and everyone essentially bows to his superior wisdom, even though he has been at it for months instead of years like the others. He also makes seriously dumb decisions, yet somehow not only gets away with them, but in the end ends up being better off for it. Everyone around him has more faith in him than he does in himself.

Either way, I enjoyed this unique story and if more books are written I will eventually get around to reading them. (I thought book 4 was the end, but the way it ends, it looks like there will be more???)

Not that great. Don't bother unless you can accept average.

Three stars. Could be two but there many poorer books out there. I should give the previso that I didn't finish the book, got about halfway. It was the classic " has potential but not grabbing me " feel. After re reading a page again (because it didn't quite make sense). Not logical fallacy but lack of clarity. I realised the disjointed narrative and failure to convey both accuracy and any warmth for the characters was grating. I sat and thought 'this is like a pulp fiction sci-fi story from the sixties or seventies' . The type I would read because nothing else is available. However better work is available so I didn't waste my time any further. In short this book doesn't whisk you away in an imaginative and fascinating way. There is a reasonable idea in there but poorly implemented.

This is a stat heavy LitRPG with a sometimes overly complicated story which i found a little hard to keep up with, luckily i also had the ebook to double check on characters etc. The 2nd half of the audio became a little easier as we get used to the number of characters and stories that were going on. The general premise was good with plenty of twists and unexpected directions happening to keep any fan happy as does the underlying tech. If using lots of stat sheets, especially repeating the usual stats it would be handy to have this as each chapter end so you could skip or speed up rather than in locations you dont want to speed through in case you miss important facts. A solid 4 stars helped by the pick up towards the end

Really interesting premise that is hamstrung by poor writing. You can tell the author has a rich, vibrant picture of the world in her head, but she wasn’t able to convey it in a cogent and coherent fashion via her writing.

Add on the multiple typos, grammatical errors and other glitches and the whole thing feels like a royal road web serial.

The author would benefit by spending a lot of time on editing and refining. But her vision is top notch - really liked where she was trying to take this book.

So hard to follow.

This was a hard book to read. Story flow was jarring. MC got OP for really no reason and then knew everything but somehow still acted like a fool. The stats made no sense. It’s like I was reading whose line is it, where everything is made up and the points don’t matter. Need to be level 80 to pilot a mech? Sure. Let’s do a battle but all the mech pilots are like level 20..... couldn’t even finish.

A solid new entry from Mountaindale press and Dawn Chapman. The story has a dystopian / corrupt backdrop, as a noob soldier joins the forces on a world set for levels 10-20. Can he catch his levels up with the rest of the group?

No spoilers here, but it was an engrossing read, and one I recommend.

Really cool scifi gamelit

Really enjoyed this story, main character is well developed, supporting characters are enjoyable as well. There's a lot to this game system that shes developed, lots of details. I'm glad she doesn't spend too much time getting into the nitty gritty of every little mechanic. Really looking forward to seeing where this plot goes.

A great ride... and just the beginning!

There is so much to like about this first book in a very promising series. Space fantasy, incredible pacing (so much happens i just one book), game mechanics, interesting characters and interpersonal relationships, and a ton of action. Highly recommended!

Some interesting ideas but reads like an extremely rough rough draft. Very confusing much of the time - can’t even tell who is speaking, and thoughts are often started but not completed.
I also found the attitude towards the female characters highly objectionable, prejudiced (despite the author being female), and shaming.

Games in space

Fun story with the main character operating in a military, space-based world instead of a fantasy world. Of course, plenty of game elements thrown in to round out the story line. There were several crescendos, which gave the story a nice flow.

It was difficult to finish that one. I don't know why, it just didn't click with me, I guess. It's a serviceable LitRPG book. The quality is whitin my expectations of the genre, but something was off. Give it a try if you're a fan. It didn't quite work for me, but could work for you.
