About the author

Dr S.L. Bhyrappa is a litterateur par excellence. He writes in the south Indian language, Kannada, and has been the bestselling novelist for over 25 years now. His novels are widely translated to pan Indian languages. He is the bestselling novelist in Marathi over the past decade and is among the top-five bestselling authors in Hindi. He is a conscious artist that depicts fundamental human emotions in his novels. In addition to his profound knowledge of Indian philosophical and cultural traditions, Professor Bhyrappa has since his childhood had intense personal experiences in both rural and urban milieu. Consequently, his characters are deeply rooted in Indian soil. Seminars have been and are being held on his novels, and volumes of literary criticism have been published on his works.

His books have found their way to the curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses of the universities in the state of Karnataka, and have been the subject of about 20 PhD dissertations. He has penned 24 novels and four volumes of literary criticism and books on aesthetics, social issues and culture. Most of his novels are translated into almost all the Indian languages and six into English. He has served as a Prof. of Philosophy over three decades at NCERT.

Dr Bhyrappa is an avid listener of both Indian and Western classical music and has a keen eye for Art. Travelling has been his paasion since childhood and he has travelled across the globe touching the glaciers of poles, forests of Amazon, deserts of Africa, bustling cities of Europe and the United States. He has trekked in the Alps, the Rockies, Andes and in Fujiama, but the Himalayas remain his greatest passion.

Maybe S.L Bhyrappa was the first to blow the whistle on the existential crisis that Hindus were facing. Be it Jati descrimination or evil practices of conversion. Though looks at first like a precursor of Gruhabanga it totally steers away from the life in a village to the city life which was just opening up to modernism.
The internal fight between following the Dharma or the cult you had accepted out of sheer love for someone while being tumultuous at the same time after being deprived of the older path of righteousness. This book makes you think is it feasible for a person to just accept something whether a cult or an opinion which he has been questioning right from the start. This is a journey that takes you to the early days of post independent Bharata (India) and the western lifestyle that was just creeping into our culture slowly with or without force and trying to destroy indigenous cultures,the mindset of the people who to this day are still facing identify crisis.

ಮತಾಂತರ ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶ ಕಂಡ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪಿಡುಗು. ದುಡ್ಡು, ಸಮಾನತೆ, ಔಷಧಿಗಳ, ಕೆಲಸಗಳ ಆಮಿಷಗಳನ್ನು ಒಡ್ಡಿ ದೀನ ದಲಿತರನ್ನು ಮತಾಂತರಗೊಳಿಸಿದ ಮಿಷನರಿಗಳ ವಿಕೃತ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಅಸಹ್ಯದ್ದು. ಈ ಪಿಡುಗು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ವಸ್ತು.

ಭೈರಪ್ಪರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕೃಷಿಯ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಕಾಲದ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನವಿದು, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪಕ್ವತೆ ಎದ್ದು ಕಂಡಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ನಾಯಕನನ್ನು ತುಂಬಾ ದುರ್ಬಲವಾಗಿ ರಚಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆತ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಯಾವ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲೂ ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ stand ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸುವವನು, ಮತಾಂತರ ಪಿಡುಗನ್ನು ದ್ವೇಷಿಸುವವನು ಕೇವಲ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನ ಮೋಹಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಿ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಇಷ್ಟು ಹಾಸ್ಯಸ್ಪದ ತಂತ್ರ ಈ ಕೃತಿಗಿದೆ, ನಾಯಕ ಭಾರತ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿದ ನಂತರ, ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿಯದೇ ಕಾಫಿಯನ್ನು ಕುಡಿಸಿದರು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಒಂದು ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನ ಕೆನ್ನೆಗೆ ಹೊಡೆಯುವ ನಾಯಕ ಸರಳವಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಮಾತಿಗೆ ಮತಾಂತರ ಆಗುವುದು ತುಂಬಾ ಹಾಸ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮೊದಲ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲೇ ಆತ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಹುಡುಗಿಯನ್ನು ವರಿಸಿ ನಂತರ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ತೊಲಳಾಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರೇ ಒಪ್ಪುವ ತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಇನ್ನೂ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ತೊಲಳಾಟದ ಭಾಗವಂತೂ one sided conversation, ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಯಾವ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲೂ ಆತ ಪಾಶ್ಚಿಮಾತ್ಯ ತತ್ವವನ್ನು, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಓದದೇ ದ್ವೇಷಿಸುತ್ತ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಬೀಸು ಹೇಳಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆ ಸಾಗಿದೆ. ನಾಯಕ ಮಾತು ಮಾತಿಗೂ ಹುಷಾರು ತಪ್ಪುತ್ತಾನೆ - ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಂತು ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳು ನಿದ್ದೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ ಅದು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೇ, and other characters accepts it as normal behaviour.

ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ದೇವಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಬೇಕು. ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದರೆ ಪ್ರಖರ ಹಿಂದುವಾದಿಯಾಗಿ ಅಥವಾ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ವಿರೋಧಿಯಾಗುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂದು ನನಗೆ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಉಂಟಾದ ಭಾವನೆ.

ಬಡ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಸತ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣ ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ತಾಯಿಯನ್ನ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು, ಕೋಪವನ್ನೇ ಉಸಿರಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಮಾವನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಡಬಾರದ ಕಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು, ತನ್ನ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಗುರುಗಳ ಸಹಾಯದಿಂದ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಸೇರಿ ನಂತರ ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
(ಇಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗಿನ ಭಾಗ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಹೋಲುತ್ತದೆ) ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಮುಂದೆ ಕಥನವೂ ಹಿಂದೂ, ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಧರ್ಮಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಾಧಕ ಭಾದಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಆಳ ಅಂತರಾಳವನ್ನು ಅರಿಯುತ್ತ ಸಾಗುವ ಸತ್ಯ, ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮಿಥ್ಯಗಳನ್ನ ಎತ್ತಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತ ನಂತರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆಗೊಳಗಾಗಿ ಅಥವಾ ಪಡೆಯುವುದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅದೇ ಮಿಥ್ಯ ಮತದೊಳಗೆ ಮಿಲಿನಗೊಂಡು ನಂತರ ಅದರಿಂದ ಅವನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಮಲಿನಗೊಂಡು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಗೆಳಯ ಶಂಕರನೊಂದಿಗಿನ ಮಾತುಕತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ತನ್ನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಗೆಳತಿ ರಾಚಮ್ಮನಿಂದ ಪರಿಚಯವಾದ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮತದ ಲಿಲ್ಲಿಯೊಂದಿಗಿನ ವಾಗ್ವಾದದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ, ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಹಿಂದು ಜನರ ಅಂಧಾನುಕರಣೆ, ನೀರಾಭಿಮಾನ, ಅಸಡ್ಡೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದರೆ.., ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮತದ ಟೊಳ್ಳುತನ, ಪ್ರಚಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತರ ಮಾಡುವ ಮತಾಂತರ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಎಂಬ ಠಪೋರಿತನ, ಅವರಲ್ಲಿನ ಮತಾಂದತೆಯನ್ನು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಹಿಂದುತ್ವವನ್ನೆ ಉಸಿರಾಡುವ ಸತ್ಯ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಎಂಬ ಮಾಯೆಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿ ಮತಾಂತರಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ದಕ್ಕಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಆದರೆ ಆ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಅನುಕ್ರಮ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದೆ. ಮದುವೆ ನಂತರ ಅವನ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿ ತೀರ ಹದಗೆಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾರಣ ಅವನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿ ನಿಂತಿರುವ ಹಿಂದುತ್ವದ ಬೇರು. ಅದು ಅವನನ್ನು ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತನಾಗುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಬೇರನ್ನು ಪೊಷಿಸುವ ಪೊಷಕಿಯಾಗಿ ಅವನ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಲಿಲ್ಲಿ. ಅವಳ ಸಹಚರ್ಯ, ಸಾತ್ವಿಕ ಮನೋಭಾವದಿಂದ ಮತ್ತು ಗೆಳೆಯ ಶಂಕರನ ಸಹಕಾರದಿಂದ ಹಿಂದುತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳಿ ನಿರಾಳನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಇದೊಂದು ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕೃತಿಯಾಗಿ, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕೃತಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಂಡರೂ.. ಧರ್ಮದ ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸೆಯನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸುವ, ನಮ್ಮ ಅಂತರಂಗವನ್ನು ಶೋಧಿಸುವ ಮನೋ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣಾತ್ಮಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾಗಿ ನನಗೆ ಕಂಡು ಬಂದಿತು.

ಎಲ್ಲೋ ಕೇಳಿದ ನೆನಪು. ನೀವು ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರನನ್ನ ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಕಥಾ ವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ದ್ವೇಷಿಸಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯನ್ನಲ್ಲ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಪ್ರತೀ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುವಾಗಲೂ ನನಗೆ ಇದರ ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ನೆನಪಾಗುತ್ತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸರಿ ಅನ್ಸತ್ತೆ. ಎಂಥಾ ಭಾಷಾ ಸಮೃದ್ಧಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ.

ಧರ್ಮಶ್ರೀ, ಮೇಲೆ ಎರಡು ಧರ್ಮಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಕಥೆ ಅಂತ ಅನ್ಸುತ್ತೆ. ಆದರೆ ಬಿಚ್ಚು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಓದಿದರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸ್ತವದ ಎಳೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತೆ. ಧರ್ಮಗಳಿಗೂ ಮೀರಿದ ಮಾನವೀಯತೆಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯತ್ವದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತೆ.

ಸತ್ಯ ಒಬ್ಬ ಬಡ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಹುಡುಗ. ಅಪ್ಪ ಬೇಜಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯ. ಅಮ್ಮ ಪ್ಲೇಗ್ ಬಡಿದು ಸಣ್ಣ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೇ ತೀರಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸತ್ಯ ವಿಧ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಅರಸುತ್ತಾ ಎಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೋ ಹೋಗಿ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಶಂಕರ ಎನ್ನೋ ಆರ್ ಎಸ್ ಎಸ್ ಸಂಘದ ಕಟ್ಟಾ ಅನುನಾಯಿಯ ಪರಿಚಯ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ. ಅವನ ಮೂಲಕ ಹಿಂದೂ ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸತ್ಯ ಆಳವಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಅಭಿಮಾನ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಹೀಗೆ ಇದ್ದೊನು ಅಚಾನಕ್ ಆಗಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಹುಡುಗಿಯ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ಅದೇ ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಮತಾಂತರ ಆಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.ಮುಂದೆ ಅವನ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯೋ ಘಟನೆಗಳು, ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ತಳಮಳಗಳು ಕಥೆಯ ಸಾರ.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ವಿಷಯ ನನ್ನ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದಿದ್ದು ಅಂದರೆ ಸತ್ಯ ನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಕಥೆ ಗೃಹಭಂಗ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತೆ. ಮತ್ತೆ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಆವರಣ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತೆ.

ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರು ಇದನ್ನು ಬರೆಯಲು ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮ, ಮಿಷನರಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರು ಧರ್ಮ ಮತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ಸವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ವಿವರಣೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನ ಸಾಗಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಧರ್ಮ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಆಚರಣೆ ಇವುಗಳೆಲ್ಲದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಧಾರಾಳವಾಗಿ ವಾದ ವಿವಾದ ಇದೆ. ಇದು ಓದುಗನನ್ನು ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ಆಗಿದೆ.
ಹಾಗೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ನಮ್ಮ ವಿಚಾರ ಕೋನವನ್ನ ವಿಸ್ತರಣೆಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚುತ್ತೆ. ಉದಾಹಣೆಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸಿರುವ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಎಂಬ ಲೇಖಕರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ. ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಇವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ಅವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ತಿಳಿಯುವ ಮನಸ್ಸಾಯಿತು.

ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ತೆರೆಮರೆಗೆ ಸರಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಓದುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಬೆಳೆಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್.ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾದವು. ಅವರ ಪರ್ವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ���ದಿದ ನಂತರ ಅವರ ಇತರ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಇತರ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕೃತಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಲೇಖಕರು ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಗಂಭೀರ ಓದುಗ ವರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದ ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನೂ ಬೆಳೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವರ "ಗೃಹಭಂಗ" ಮತ್ತು "ಭಿತ್ತಿ" ಕೃತಿಗಳು ನನ್ನ ಜೀವನದೃಷ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಣಾಯಕ ಪ್ರಭಾವವನ್ನು ಬೀರಿವೆ. ಈ ಪರಿಚಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಏನಾದರೂ ದೋಷಗಳಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದು ನನ್ನ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಗ್ರಹಿಕೆಯ ಮಿತಿ ಅಷ್ಟೇ….


ಭಾರತೀಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದೌರ್ಬಲ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ವಸ್ತು, ವಿಷಯ,ವಿಚಾರ ಅಥವಾ ಧರ್ಮ ಏನೇ ಇರಬಹುದು… ಅದು ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟವಾದದ್ದು ಮೇಲ್ಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವುದು ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ. ಅದೇ ನಮ್ಮದೇ ಆಚಾರವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಅಥವಾ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದ್ದಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ತೀರಾ ಗೌಣ, ಯಾವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲವೆಂಬ ಮನೋಭಾವ. ಇದನ್ನೇ ಬಂಡವಾಳವಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಇಸ್ಲಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಗಳು ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮೇಲೆ‌ ನಿರಂತರ ಸವಾರಿಯನ್ನೇ ಮಾಡಿದವು.‌ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮತ‌ಪ್ರಚಾರಕರು ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿನ ಹುಳುಕುಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಧರ್ಮವನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಲು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನೇ ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ರಚಿತವಾದ ಕೃತಿ "ಧರ್ಮಶ್ರೀ".


ಭಾರತೀಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ಅಜ್ಞಾನ ಬಡತನ ಸ್ವಾಭಿಮಾನ ಶೂನ್ಯತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಊರುಗೋಲಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮತವು ತನ್ನ ಕಬಂಧ ಬಾಹುಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಿದ ಬಗೆಯನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಲೇಖಕರು. ಹಣ, ಉದ್ಯೋಗದ ಆಮಿಷಗಳನ್ನು ಒಡ್ಡಿ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲಸುಮೇಲೋಗರವಾಗಿಸಿ ಹಾಗೂ ತನಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲಕರವಾಗಿದ್ದ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ವಾತಾವರಣವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮತವು ದಿನದಿಂದ ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಲೇ ಹೋದ ಬಗೆಯನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ವಿವರವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಭಿಮಾನಶೂನ್ಯತೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ,ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಆಚರಣೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಲೆಮಾರಿನಿಂದ ತಲೆಮಾರಿಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯ ವರ್ಗಾವಣೆ ಮಾಡುವಲ್ಲಿನ ವೈಫಲ್ಯತೆ, ಐದು ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿರುವ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿನ ಅನೇಕ ರೂಪಾಂತರಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಆಚರಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಉಂಟಾದ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಲಾಗದೆ ಕೇವಲ ಅಂಧಾನುಕರಣೆಗಳ ಫಲವೇ ಇತರರು ನಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೆ ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಅನುವು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿತು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಸಹ ಅನೇಕ ದೃಷ್ಟಾಂತಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.


ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸತ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣ ಮತ್ತು ಶಂಕರನ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆಗಳು, ಸತ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣ ಮತ್ತು ಲಿಲ್ಲಿಯ‌ ನಡುವಿನ ಚರ್ಚೆಗಳು ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮದ ಆಳ ಅಗಾಧತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅನಂತತೆಯನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟಿವೆ. ರಾಜಾರಾಂ ಮೋಹನ್ ರಾಯರಂತಹವರು ಸಹ ನಮ್ಮ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳದೇ ಹೋದದ್ದು ಖೇದಕರ ಮತ್ತು ಅದೇ ಅವರ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಸಮಾಜದ ಮುಳುವಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದದ್ದು ದುರದೃಷ್ಟ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಈ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆಗಳು ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿನ ಮತಾಂಧತೆ, ಅಸಹಿಷ್ಣುತೆ, ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೂ ನಮಗೆ ಅರಿವಿಗೆ ಬಾರದಿದ್ದ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಾಹ್ಯ ಕಾರಣಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಆಂತರಿಕ ಒತ್ತಡದಿಂದ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದಿಂದ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಮತಾಂತರಗೊಂಡ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ತೊಳಲಾಟಗಳು, ಎರಡು ಭಿನ್ನ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆಯುವ ಘರ್ಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜರ್ಜರಿತವಾಗುವ ಕುಗ್ಗುವ ಮನಸ್ಸುಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರಣ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಕಾಲ ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುವಷ್ಟು ಸಶಕ್ತವಾಗಿವೆ.


ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಜೀವನ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳು, ನಮ್ಮ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಭವ್ಯ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಅಸಡ್ಡೆ ಅನಾದರಗಳು ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಮಾಜಕ್ಕೆ ಇರುವ ಬಹುದೊಡ್ಡ ಕಂಟಕ. 

ಮತಾಂತರ ಇಂದು ಒಂದು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪಿಡುಗಾಗಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ‌ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿನ ಒಗ್ಗಟ್ಟಿನ ಕೊರತೆ, ಆಧುನಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಕ್ರಮ, ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮಿಷನರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೇರಳವಾಗಿ ಹರಿದುಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹಣ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಬಿಗಡಾಯಿಸಿವೆ‌. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಒಂದು ಸಾಲಿನ ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯ ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ……

"ಈ ದೇಶದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಎಂಬ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ಬತ್ತಿಸಿಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಸಾಕು. ಉಳಿಯುವುದು ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಅವಶೇಷಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರ… ಜೀವಂತ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಅಲ್ಲ".....

One of the classics of Kannada literature. SL Bhyrappa has writen this book exceptionally. This book is a story of a hindu boy SatyaNarayana and how he got converted as Xavier Satyadasa to marry his Christian girlfriend and later realized his ancestral worth and got back to his roots along with his wife lilly, who became Dharmashree.!! though its a story of a boy and girl and their love story, the theme of the book mainly exposes the evangelists and missionaries that fool the guillable masses and convert them to Christianity.
Author clearly exposed the intention and ideas behind these evangelical groups and their business. A must read for every Indians out there.

P.S.: Those who have read Dharmashree must also read "Breaking India" by Rajiv Malhotra to get a clear original account of this evangelical, missionaries ill motivated work in India.

This was my first Kannada novel. I listened to the audio, narrated by Ritwik Simha. And it was a great experience. The story is about Sathya a true believer in Hinduthva when he falls in love with a Christian girl he goes out of his way to marry her. He converts himself to Christianity. But does he become a Christian from heart and soul? or was it a mistake on his part to leave a religion which he loved ardently. This novel is based on the inner conflicts of Sathya who is searching for himself and unable to find what he wants in his life. My favorite character in this novel was Lilly who always stood by his side and supported Sathya through thick and thin. She understood him more than he himself did. Finally it was she who showed him the right path through which he finally finds peace.

Though written in the 1960s, the novel remains strikingly relevant even today. The transformation of Satya, who initially fiercely opposes Christianity but eventually converts due to his love for a Christian woman, is juxtaposed with the woman’s attachment to Hindu culture despite being born Christian. The novel introduces a range of well-developed characters, representing pro-religion, critical, and neutral stances in the ongoing religious conflicts, providing a balanced narrative.

Dharmashree stands out as a unique and bold work in Kannada literature, addressing a highly sensitive topic that few have explored and likely never will again. It is a deeply thought-provoking and essential read, offering timeless insights into the complexities of religion, identity, and human struggle.

ಬಡ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಣದ ಆಸೆ ತೋರಿಸಿ, ಅಥವಾ ಕಾಯಿಲೆ ಗುಣ ಮಾಡುವ ಸೋಗಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮತಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಾಲಾಯಿಸುವ ಮಿಷನರಿಗಳ ಅನೇಕ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳಿವೆ‌ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ. ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿಗಾಗಿ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತನಾಗುವ ಹಿಂದೂ ಯುವಕನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಘರ್ಷಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೈಜವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 1961 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ. ಧರ್ಮ ಶ್ರೀ ಎಂಬುದು ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಯುಕ್ತವಾದ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ. 


ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಆಫೀಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ "ಗೋಪಾಲ ಕೃಷ್ಣ" ಎಂಬ ಆಂಧ್ರದ ಯುವಕ ನನ್ನ ಸಹೋದ್ಯೊಗಿಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಯಿತು. ಸುಮಾರು 3 ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಅವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸಮಾಡಿದ್ದೆ ಆದರೆ ಆತನ ಮತ ಯಾವುದು ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿ ಎಂದೂ ನಾನು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ‌. ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ಮಸ್ ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕೆ 1 ವಾರ ರಜೆ ಹಾಕಿ ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದಾಗ, ನೀನೇನು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ಮಸ್ ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತೀಯಾ ಗೋಪಾಲ ಎಂದು ಹಗುರವಾಗಿ ಮಾತು ಹರಿಬಿಟ್ಟೆ. ಹೌದು,‌ ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ಮಸ್ ಹಬ್ಬ ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂದಾಗ ಅವಾಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕುಳಿತೆ. 


ಮತ್ತೆ ನಿನಗೆ ಹಿಂದೂ ಹೆಸರೇಕಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆ, ತಾಯಿ, ತಮ್ಮ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಹಿಂದೂವಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಆದರೆ ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಮಿಷನರಿ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದುವಾಗ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಫೀಸ್ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದಾಗ ಮನೆಯ ಪರಿಸ್ಥತಿ ಅರಿತು ನಮಗೆ ಧನ ಸಹ���ಯ ಮಾಡಿ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಮತಕ್ಕೆ ಇಡೀ ಸಂಸಾರವನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿದರು. ನನ್ನ ಮುಂದಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೆ ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಹೆಸರೇ ಇಡುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಮಿಷನರಿಗಳು ಯಾವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಡ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳ ದೌರ್ಬಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ಮತಾಂತರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದಾಗ ಮಿಷನರಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳ ದುರುದ್ದೇಶ ಮುಖಕ್ಕೆ ರಾಚಿತು. ವಿದೇಶದಿಂದ ಮಿಷನರಿಗಳ ಮುಖಾಂತರ ಕೋಟ್ಯಾಂತರ ರುಪಾಯಿ ಈ ತಮ್ಮ ಮತದ "ಉದ್ಧಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ" ರವಾನೆಯಾಗುವುದು ತಿಳಿದಿರುವ ಸಂಗತಿ. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ ಮತಾಂತರಗೊಂಡ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ವಸೂಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದಂತೆ. ಈ ಗೋಪಾಲನಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಳ ಸಿಗುವ ಕೆಲಸ ದೊರೆತ ನಂತರ ಆತನ ಸಂಬಳದ 10 ಶೇಕಡವನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಚರ್ಚಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವುದು ಕಡ್ಡಾಯವಂತೆ‌. ಇದು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ��ಿಂದೂಗಳನ್ನು ಮತಾಂತರಿಸಲು ಬಂಡವಾಳವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಕಟ್ಟಳೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲದ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದು ಧರ್ಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ದುರಭಿಮಾನ ತುಂಬಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇತರೆ ಧರ್ಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಬಲವಂತದ ಕಟ್ಟು ಪಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಗೌರವ, ಅಭಿಮಾನ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವ್ಯಾಹತವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳ ಮತಾಂತರಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊನೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲದಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಸರಕಾರ ಸುಪರ್ದಿಗೆ ಪಡೆದಂತೆ ಇತರ ಧರ್ಮಗಳ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸರಕಾರ ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಣೆ ನಡೆಸಿದರೆ ವಿದೇಶದಿಂದ ಮಿಷನರಿಗಳಗಳಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ದುಡ್ಡಿಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವಾದರೂ ಕಡಿವಾಣ ಹಾಕಬಹುದು ಎಂಬುದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.

ಸತ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣ(ಸತ್ಯ),ರಾಚಮ್ಮ,ಲಿಲ್ಲಿ,ನಂಜು,ಶಂಕರ,ರಾಮಣ್ಣ,ನಂಜುಂಡ ಮೇಷ್ಟರು,ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಮೇಷ್ಟರು,ಬಿಷಪ್ಪ ಮುಖ್ಯಪಾತ್ರಗಳು.

ಈ ಕಥೆಯು ಸತ್ಯನ ಬಾಲ್ಯತನದಿಂದ ಶುರುವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಣ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಅಕ್ಕನನ್ನು ಒಂದೆ ದಿನ ಕಳೆದುಕೂಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ ಪ್ಲೇಗಿನಿಂದ ಮೃತಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸತ್ಯನ ತಾಯಿಯು ಸತ್ಯನನ್ನು ಅಣ್ಣನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿಬಿಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ,ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸತ್ಯ ಪಡುವ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ನೆನಸಿಕೂಂಡರೆ ದುಃಖವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಓದಿಯೆ ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕು.

ಮಾವನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂಸೆಯನ್ನು ತಡಿಯಲಾರದೆ ನಂಜುಂಡ ಮೇಷ್ಟರ ಸಹಾಯದಿಂದ ನಾಗೂರನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ನರಸಾಪುರ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಮೇಷ್ಟರಿಂದ ಸಹಾಯ ಪಡೆದು ಸ್ಕೂಲಿಗೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಫೀಜ್ ತುಂಬುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಪಡುವ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು, ಹೋಟೆಲು ಕೆಲಸಗಾರನಾಗಿ,ಥೀಯೇಟರ್ ಗೇಟ್ ಕೀಪರನಾಗಿ ,ಬಿಕ್ಷೆ ಬೇಡಿಕೂಂಡು ಜೀವನ ಸಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Saraswati Putra S. L. Bhyrappa’s prowess with the pen is renowned far and wide. His commentaries on relevant socio-political themes have found very wide acclaim. Dharmashree which was written very early in his writing career is truly a magnificent landmark of exquisite story telling with hard-hitting commentaries on few topics that impact the society even today. SLB’s writing is brisk, impactful, endearing and leaves an undeniable mark on one’s minds. When such a classic masterpiece was translated, it is no surprise that one would lap up the English version, which is quite close the kannada original. I would highly recommend non kannada speakers to read the English one.

I will pen down my review in 2 forms. First, I will write about the book and second, I try to capture the thought process from the viewpoints of few of its central characters.

Dharmashree is the journey of a poor Brahamana kid Satyanarayana (Satya) as he battles childhood poverty and his innate desire to get educated, which is beyond his economic means. Along the way, he has to endure multiple losses (mother, uncle’s torture) to being subject to humiliation owing to his caste. I am quite certain there are quite a few individuals in modern society who can relate to this aspect of Satya in one form or other. During this tumultuous journey, he builds some fantastic friendships and encounters mentors who pave the path for his progress in his life. Some of the friendships translate into relationships over time. From being an ardent follower of Hindu Dharma, he finds at the crossroads of religion when he falls in love with Lily. Their relationship is quite interesting as it develops on the bedrock on intellectualism and healthy debate on the principles of Dharma. Heart compels him to convert to Christianity to marry his love. Material comforts are showered along with position in the society, but the mind is constantly at a struggle. Faced with identity crisis, thoughts transforms into physical and psychological trauma leading to his wife taking a step towards rejuvenation culminating in Ghar Vapsi.

Dharmashree has some interesting interludes of philosophical bent that forces the reader to contemplate about the topic on hand. There are very poignant portions about Swami Vivekananda and Anand Coomaraswamy. In fact, in the preface itself, SLB pays homage to AKC whose writings have had a profound impact on the writer. I can’t even fathom the genius of AKC considering the huge mountain of knowledge he has bestowed upon us. There is also a portion that make us ponder on individual vs societal goals. More on this a little later. But the crux of the book is about the clash of ideologies, religions and identities. How the fractures caused by the ancient are being harnessed to drive a deeper wedge in the name of religion than being true to the word of supreme i.e. overall development. The book has some extensive references to works spreading across the spectrum on various religions and their intricacies. The pain and agony of the protagonist towards the end of the book, specially about the identity of next generation can really be felt hard & SLB ensures that the readers’ emotional arc does traverse this bend. To write more is to dilute the reading experience and I would focus on the personalities which I found to be more interesting.

In the book, I was wondering if the author is conveying a message through the names and mannerisms of the characters, Are these just characters or different facets of ours hidden in the depths of our mind?

For me, some characters have left a deep mark on my mind. Rachamma, meaning the compassionate one, truly embodies her name and is the true confidante friend, loving sister-in-law and later a guide who tries to do good for her friend, at the cost of her own family. The fact that the protagonist feels that she would be welcoming as compared to his own traditional sister speaks about the bond he has developed over the years. It’s true that bonds developed in childhood persist over life.

Shankara: For me, his characterisation always reminds me of Adi Shankara. Like the famed guru, he is always around guiding the protagonist across the myriad mazes of life and intellectual world. He always guides Satya who considers him as Anna and plays that role multiple times across the book. Beyond this, he is also a prime example of selfless service, one who is clear about life objectives and overall societal & social upliftment. Heroes like him are always unsung, but their impact is always profound.

When I started to write this review, I thought I will write separately about Lily and Satya. However, as I pen down my thoughts, it’s apparent that they are inseparable from each other. Satya represents most of the common folk coming from an economically deprived community, yearning for that one chance to eke out a better life and break the glass ceiling of classes. However, the challenges that he faces are too real (personal experiences). Lily on the other hand represents the product of a well established ecosystem that thrives on a certain agenda. The 2 characters represent possibly 2 extremes of the spectrum, yet their innate curiosity and search for the truth brings the intellectual minds together. Their mutual love, so eloquently represented in multiple forms, just shows the extent to which a human can strive to make his/her loved ones happy. Whether it’s Satya’s conversion or Lily’s care or her final reach out to Shankara, they are just 2 humans who want a better life for themselves with their own identity and a better future for their child.

Satya is the truth inside. He undergoes multiple transformations and Lily / Leela as she is called once becomes his partner in this transformation journey. It’s befitting that the book is aptly termed, Dharmashree. One question remains: As a society, have we learnt anything?

MUST READ, MUST HAVE BOOK. GIGANTIC MASTERPIECE

I have always had this question in mind, In Inter religion wedding why only a Hindu gets converted be it a girl or boy and why not the other way happen., I also thought there is only exit from the religion and no entry types.
Also I have my sympathy & Prayers for all the Hindus who are converted to other religion , Its pretty sure deep inside they will still be Hindus and regretting for the deed like the character Satya.

One of the best works by SLB that carries his regular style of blending facts with fictional characters. Here protagonist who strongly believes in his Dharma (way of life that is beyond Religion as per SLB here) in his formative years, faces a dilemma to choose between Dharma and love of his life. SLB captures the mental state of the protagonist in various situations like cultural gatherings, death, celebration, education and tries to convey few facts (based on his research) around Dharma.
Would recommend to read SLB’s Saartha before this book.

I am quite disturbed after reading this book. It is about the journey of a Hindu Brahmin who studies Hinduism in depth, critically examines the pros and cons of Hinduism vis a vis Christianity and stands up to the blatant conversions carried out by missionaries on the back of half truths and ignorance among the masses.

Ironically he ends up converting to Christianity to marry the woman he loves simply because there is no way for her to convert to Hinduism.

The story then follows his mental tumult and ends with the couple discovering the Arya samaj route of moving back to Hinduism.

It's worth a read for many of the critical dialogues. What I take away from this book is that following religion blindly or allowing ourselves to be manipulated is a crime; and in order to avoid this one needs to do significantly greater reading.

Another feather in the cap of Sri SL Bhyrappa. But this feather is no match for his other work in the same category - Avarna.
In love, Sathyanarayana becomes Xavier Sathya. But can never make peace with himself. His immense pride in his own religion and awareness of the shortcomings of his newly adopted religion means he is caught in eternal restlessness. Till Dharmashree helps him find his way back.
Who's Dharmashree? Well, in the end that is not an important question.

Readable, but not enlightening. It does not grip you like Avarna does.
But worth a read nevertheless.

Anything Dr.S.L.Byrappa writes is sure to stimulate the mind with high thoughts. This novel, which was written by the author in his 20s is a testament to his astute observation of society and human nature. This story revolves around how Hindu society has been plagued by perverted strategies of bigoted missionaries with the sole aim to 'harvest' souls. It also speaks about a conservative Hindu society which refuses to let an outsider enter. Times are changing for the better and this beautiful story bears witness to that.

Dharmashree treads the path most fear to tread, christian missionary role in systematically eliminating Indian culture. S.L.Bhyrappya takes the debate route to unveil the story. Hence we get to hear both sides of the story in a logical way.

Loved the story until a couple of chapters towards the end. The book comes across as contemporary but loses its present day relevance at the end
