Book Two of The Divine Masquerade Series follows Pallas and Othello as they journey to Greenstone.
D.C. Belton travels internationally and is an elected state legislator from Buckhead, Georgia. When a constituent’s son accidentally killed himself texting-while-driving, Belton spearheaded the successful passage of two safety laws to prevent future tragedies. Belton has a passion for literacy and female empowerment.
"I wrote these books for my daughters, to share with them my love of mythology.
But as C.S. Lewis once wrote about his own Goddaughter, “I had not realized that girls grow up quicker than books. As a result, you are too old for fairy tales.”
My daughters are grown now; off to live their lives in their own bold adventures. But as they face the world before them, I know the experience that Pallas has given them will hearten their spirits, as my love for them strengthens their esteem."
This book was worth the wait! Now I'm looking forward to the 3rd book in the series, "The City of God". I received this book yesterday afternoon and finished it just now. How good is this book...let's see, I stayed up last night until I woke up with book in hand and glasses on, then I didn't want to take my son to swimming lessons so that I could finish it. Of course I did take him, but dived back into it when we returned home, that's how good it is. I couldn't/didn't want to put it down. Every adventure that Pallas has is so well told that you can see every character in your mind, at least I can. The new people in the book were fantastic and I hope to read more about them in the third book. I was in awe the entire time.
All I have to say is pick up the first book in this series, "The Gods Among Us" and then read this one. Thank you D.C. Belton for another amazing adventure and thank you to your daughters for putting up with your writing!
Wow! I just don’t know where to start. Whom the Gods Destroy is an amazing sequel, and I truly look forward to the next book in this series.
What made this such a great book? Well, for starters, Pallas. She was a wonderful character in the first book and even better in the second. Like all main characters, they need to grow throughout the story, become stronger, smarter, etc. And Pallas does exactly that. She just kept surprising me.
Another great thing about this story is that, in my opinion, D.C. Belton has mastered the balance between providing enough details and allowing the reader to use their imagination. This balance kept the story fresh and in turn kept me engaged right until the very end.
Oh! And the ending…I really didn’t see that coming. :) All I can say without giving it away is Awesome!
I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who wants a fun read that will keep you thinking and turning pages.
I won this as part of a Goodreads Firstreads giveaway.
I really liked this book. I didn't realize it was the second book in the series and ordered the first book this morning on Amazon so I can go back and fill in a few of the missing gaps. Because it was the second book I felt a little lost at the beginning for lack of a backstory. Once I got into it, I really enjoyed the characters. They appear simple but several of them end up complex by the end. There were several twists that left me wondering what the truth was (which is similar to the thinking of Pallas throughout the story). The author has done an excellent job creating another world that envelopes the reader and makes them feel as if they are part of the story. I'm very much looking forward to the sequel as well as going back to read the first book. Thanks for an excellent read!
The second book is so good. Pallas attends a school with Elena and the twins. On the first day, things don't go so well for Pallas. But later in the book there is a lot of suspense. She gets a note from her father! But is it good, or is it bad? There's also the games and the gold. Every year, the Fire group wins the gold, but this year with Pallas, the Water group is going for it. Lucy is boxing against the toughest boy in school! Will she get beat to death? Casey is doing mounted javelin against a bully that will cheat if it means winning! What will become of Casey? And when Pallas does the chariot driving, it depends on her to win the gold! Then there's the hunt. Will people die? Who will win? When Pallas goes against the Fire God, what will happen to her? Find out in the 2nd book! (Kylie, age 9)
This is a completely spellbinding sequel to the first book of the Divine Masquerade Series. The main character, a slave girl named Pallas, discovers more about who she really is but is caught in a spiral of events that complicate her new found life and those she holds dear. Set in a charismatic world perfectly depicted amongst the contrast of bright, shady, and complicated characters, filled with adventure, suspense, a dash of romantic inclination and humour, this fantasy will appeal to young and mature readers alike. Can’t wait for book three of this vivid and exciting series!
My only complaint is that this book totally sucked up my whole day! I ended up doing nothing but laying around the house reading, because I was unable to put the book down! And left me with a pretty bad book-hangover that only can be fixed by reading the next book in this series.
Pallas is such a great character! I loved the first book, but I love the second book in this series even more.
D.C. Belton is a great writer, and I love that she keeps her YA books clean and appropriate for a younger audience yet interesting enough for adults to read.
First of all I have to say thank you very much to D.C. Belton for sending me a copy of this book which hasn't yet been released in any format in the UK.
This was an amazing follow-up to The Gods Among Us and I enjoyed every word of it. The plot thickens with more secrets and twists to keep the reader guessing and it was jam packed with action and drama to boot. I will be keeping a close eye for the release of 'City Of God'.
I enjoyed this book just as much as the first. I am still wondering about some of the characters back stories, but was intrigued by the ones that were revealed. Another thing I really like is that something that seems unimportant in the long run creates a chain of events that will change the characters' world forever. This book is full of ideas about fame and power that have made me think and apply them to the past and present of our world.
I reaceived this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. Not only did I enjoy the book, but my Daughter really enjoyed reading it before I got to it. D.C. Belton just gained a few more fans for the Divine Masquerade Series.
I was sent this from the author D.C belton so thank you was so excited when it arrived as I was eager to continue the journey with pallas. To start with this book has another unique drawn front cover which I love. The writing yet again flowed very well and was wrote very well. This book took me a long time to get through unlike the first one not sure why though. I found that pallas character did grow quite a bit in this book and was nice to see the introduction to so many new characters at the school. The last few chapters were the most fast paced and enjoyed it quite a lot. Just took a long time to get into this maybe because so much of the book was about the relationships between the different houses at school. That did drag the book but nether the less I did enjoy this book and am excited to read the next book. Just liked the first book a bit better. Thanks again to D.C belton for sending me this free copy :)
Whom the Gods Destroy is the second book to the Divine Masquerade Series.
I loved the first book, The Gods Among Us but didn't quite enjoy this sequel. Okay - I still loved Pallas, she's smarter, stronger and a very likable character. I just didn't care about the other supporting characters in the story. Like Pallas, I hated the politics in all the "houses", I can't understand any of it. I was skimming almost the whole time, wasn't interested in any other things unless if it's about Pallas' and her mother's true identity.
Another thing I didn't really care about is the school-related drama. This was supposed to be a "Greeky" myth but it turned out an ordinary book this time around.
A good story. I think his books will get better when he stops relying on allusions so much. It's fun to find the Easter eggs, but I want to hear more from the author's own voice. In my edition, "you're" was used where "your" was supposed to be used every single time. I'm eager to read the third to see what's happening in the world he created.
