Military cadet Nika McKay returns to his birthplace, the distant colony-moon of Halcyon, only to witness the ruthless suppression of the colony's fledgling independence movement. Joining would-be insurgents, Nika aids in the capture of military "jackets," combat suits of incredible power and capability. Carrying out a guerilla campaign, Nika and crew become local legends and targets of Earth's ire. Dubbed the "Suicide Division," their nickname may become a prophecy!

First things first. Lucas Marangon is an exceptional artist. The character and Mech&tech designs are fabulous. You can hear the 'but', right? But the story is all over the place. The characters are thinly sketched, there are weird time jumps in the narrative, the panel to panel transitions aren't as clear as they should be (could be colouring issues in a couple of places) and the story just isn't clear. It's hard to keep track of who is doing what to who which is real shame in something that is very strong conceptually and visually.

That said, I will be keeping an eye out for what he does next.

There is a lot to like about this military science fiction tale. Characters such as Nika, Professor Castex, and Mani have plenty of personality. There is no argument that they don't get a lot of space to develop as the four issue series was truncated even before it hit TPB. There is a note in the publication information, stating that the fourth issue wasn't published.

Good art, Good story telling. while not an original story, Earth colony seeking its independence from the corporations that are milking it dry, the team that created R.I.P.D. do a good job here.
