I read this book in one setting in the public library.

This book promotes awareness to one's GI track beyond just stomach. Being a major system, linking all others, the GI track is an important component of health. The recommendations are largely commonsensical, leaning toward the standard recommendations of fruits, vegetables, fiber, avoiding excessive animal fat and processed food. Some recommendations about probiotics and prebiotics, and other supplements. It is a standard "how-to" readable book. The hype is marginally obvious but not too obstructive to the overall message.

Have you ever complained after a Dr. appointment that your Dr. was in a hurry and didn't seem to have time for you. The appointment was fifteen minutes long and you left with the same problems, no education and an anxious feeling of rejection? Well, Dr. Steven Lamm doesnt have this problem. He loves to hear himself talk and he doesnt think his patients are very smart so he talks to them like they are children. For example, he explained for pages the anatomy of the gut and joked a few times that patients often don't know where they have pain when they say, "my belly hurts." Despite the poor writing, I really liked this book. Dr. Steven Lamm is one of the Drs who guests on The View. This book is very conversational, like a spot segment. If you can get past that he does offer new information about gut health. For example, he says that we are just beginning to realize what different bacteria does inside the gut and how diseases begin because of unbalanced gut health. Not all probiotics are created equally.

The most interesting part of this book talked about how the brain and the gut started out as a single organ during fetal development and continue to "talk" to each other via the vagus nerve. I am fascinated by the idea that nurturing a healthy gut with enzymes, probiotics, and a good diet might make significant changes in a person's mental health.
