"If lips and life do not agree, the testimony will not amount to much." The young Harry Ironside knew the truth of his own statement all too well. He began leading a Sunday school class in Los Angeles at age eleven, but stopped when he realized his own need to know God more intimately. Converted at age thirteen, Ironside began to preach shortly thereafter and continued to pursue God's calling for the rest of his life. Ironside not only became a highly sought after preacher and classroom teacher, but his years of dedicated study also produced a series of highly regarded Bible commentaries. The Ironside Expository Commentary series offers concise outlines of the biblical text along with insightful and practical comments that bring out the essential truths of God's Word. This reprint of the Ironside commentaries presents the unabridged text in a newly typeset edition. A perfect resource for preaching and teaching from the English text of the Bible, these commentaries also provide the general reader with an excellent resource for personal study and spiritual growth.

I have never read a "bad" book by H.A. Ironside. This book is devotional in nature, true to the scriptures, and solid in its exposition. Highly recommended. [The book is not a difficult read. While scholarly it is not for the educational elite- though they would benefit from it. It is warm and readable. It took me so long to read it because as I was teaching through the book of Matthew myself I held myself to only reading one chapter a week]

As usual, Ironside approaches the Gospel account with a clear perspective of context and continuity. His understanding of Matthew's portrait of Christ as King is clearly emphasized and maintained throughout while offering the insight of one who has clearly spent untold hours in intimate fellowship with the Lord. An instant classic and permanent fixture in my physical library. An excellent reference for anyone who desires a closer look at the heart of the King of Glory.

Ironside has a way of making you slow down and deeply concentrate on the text, yet it also has the feel of a chat with a dear friend. And what conversation could be better than one about a book introducing a nation to its Savior and King?
It focuses on understanding the scriptures by helping the reader understand the text first and applying it to their lives last. Each chapter of Matthew is covered in its own chapter here, so occasionally chapters are a little long, but still, it makes for an excellent study guide.

I really enjoyed reading Ironside's expository commentary on Matthew. I only wish he would have expounded more frequently throughout. Occasionally he would, but it wasn't as often as I would have liked. I really do appreciate his insights and how he continually referenced and crossreferences other passages to provide a fuller, richer, meaning.

Matthew: Ironside Commentaries by Henry Allan Ironside is a very solid and respected study on the Gospel according to Saint Matthew. Mr. Ironside exhibited a very knowledgeable and straightforward approach in presenting these biblical truths on this synoptic gospel.
Indeed, Mr. Ironside seemed to have possessed a unique ability to present complicated biblical concepts from the gospel of Matthew in a user-friendly and acceptable manner. In fact, his commentaries of Matthew contain a blend of scholarly and devotional elements all wrapped up in one book.
Mr. Ironside’s description of Matthew’s use of language is that which fitted perfectly within the context of the Jewish culture. Indeed, his commentaries presented a beautiful and biographical masterpiece of the life and times of Jesus’ ministries. Therefore, he stresses that the Gospel according to Matthew was written primary to the Jewish people by a Jew.
Professor Ironside’s portrayal of Matthew’s Gospel was that of an analytical and historical work of genius. Written in a mostly non-technical, conversational style, his teaching on the Gospel of Matthew is very organized and easy to follow. In this book, the reader will find broad and comprehensive commentaries on the fundamental teachings of Jesus, particularly, on the Prophetic and Olivet discourses.
In truth, Mr. Ironside captured the essential points of each prophetic and Olivet discourse and brought to light important explanation which the ordinary reader would not notice. Indeed, his commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew are very penetrating but not confusing or obscure.
Mr. Ironside’s writing is forthright and unequivocal but not reckless or overstated. Each passage is considered in its proper sequence and special attention is given to key verses and difficult portions and sections which merit special comment. His method of presenting the Gospel of Matthew greatly enhances your understanding of all the prophetic discourses.
Even if you have been studying the Bible for years, Professor Ironside’s systematic presentation on the Gospel according to Saint Matthew will simplify the difficult areas you might have concerning his parables and make them more understandable.
This book provides an unmatched resource for all who seek to know more about the gospel of the Kingdom. His teachings style gives you the sensation of being there in the classroom with him. It is interesting to see how Mr. Ironside harmonized Jesus’ teaching of parables with all of the other synoptic gospels and the Gospel of Saint John.
It appeared that this Matthew Ironside Commentaries covered the core components for most theological studies on the Gospel according to Saint Matthew. A thorough explanation was given on the genealogy, virgin birth, John the Baptist, Kingdom, parables, miracles, beatitudes, sin, and hypocrisy. In fact, Mr. Ironside covers all of the prophetic and Olivet discourses of this gospel.
This carefully written commentary on Matthew’s Gospel is an excellent read for devotional reading and for serious Bible study. It is also a tremendous help and source of material for pastors, Sunday school teacher, and layman. It can also be used for as a textbook in Bible Colleges and Institutes.

A devotional commentary, good as a help for preachers or Sunday School teachers, or individual spiritual reading (I read through it during my lunch breaks). Those considering buying any in this series should be aware that the more recent paperback and hardcover editions do not include the Bible verses in the text, whereas the older, hardcover editions do.
