Unlucky in Love #3

Down for the Word Count

Rate this book
With a single phone call, I swapped my life of movie scripts and paparazzi for bedtime stories and skinned knees.

I always dreamed of having a family. As my two childhood friends settled down with partners of their own, I worried it was too late for me.
Until her. The beautiful woman who chased me down and stole my heart.
And to think she accused me of stealing.

After that awkward encounter, I thought I'd lost her for good. Then months later, I showed up at the only home I'd ever known to find the mystery woman, a precocious child in tow, and my aging father figure in desperate need of supervision. This incredible stranger took on more than she ever bargained for and needed help.

There was only one thing to be done.

Now I'm a single-sort-of-dad to a child who isn't my own and she's a kind-of-sort-of mom to her niece in need, as we work together to care for the man who helped raise me. I want nothing more than to take this role of a lifetime and make it last.

But this isn’t Hollywood and I’m just an actor.
I’m doing my best to support them all, but can my help ever be enough?

Down For The Word Count is a full-length, found family romance, can be read as a standalone, and is the third book in the Unlucky in Love Series.

I really enjoyed the second book in this series, still need to go back and read the first one, and this one was just as good! I loved all the characters, loved what they were dealing with, and the way it all fell together for an HEA at the end was perfect! But it also started with a perfect “meet-cute” or maybe it would be a not so meet cute, lol.

I really liked both characters so much. Frankie was understandable in how she handled those around her with what she’d experienced with her mom and even her own sister. Although at a certain point I didn’t like how she was treating Harrison, I feel like she should have realized or wanted to do better than those women she’d been using for example. Especially how she acted like he was causing her more trouble, and how she hurt his feelings early in the story with that.

Harrison, I adored him. I hated that people treated him like a good time guy and wouldn’t take him seriously for most of his life. But again, his own past made so much sense for why he let that happen so often, and how he reacted to things in his own life. In the end though, he was there. For her, for George, for Colette. He was a keeper and one you could rely on. With my own relative facing some of the same issues George was going through, there were some parts hard to read for me, but it really made it harder to put down as well because I was so emotionally invested in the story and these characters.

One of my top reads of the year! I can’t remember the last time I had tears streaming down my face as I read a book.

Piper has written an amazing story that will have you feeling all the emotions - laughing, smiling, heart hurting and angry (with one character).

Hidden identity, found family are some of my favorite tropes and this story will fill your heart so full.

These characters are each a bit broken, trying to find their purpose and wanting to make sure everyone is okay along the way. The dialogue, banter, passion and love is amazing and swoon worthy.

I’m sad this series is ending but Piper has written one for the ages. Prepare for a book hangover and never forgetting these characters and this a story.

Loved this! Piper has taken two broken characters and healed them with a found family in this wonderful opposites attract romance.

Harrison and Frankie’s love story is a bit of mess, just like them. Harrison is the good-time guy and Frowny Frankie’s nickname says it all. The one thing they can agree on though, is there love for their surrogate father, George and Frankie’s niece, Colette. These four make for some hilarious and emotional times.

Neither Frankie nor Harrison feel worthy of love or of permanent relationships and that clouds everything that they do. But they both show up when needed. And George and Colette both need them.

I loved Harrison and Frankie as a couple and they were totally complementary to each other from a parenting standpoint. And the steamy times in the pool house, loved that even more! These two characters deserve all the love!

I have loved this whole series, but this book is my favorite! You don’t have to read the first two to enjoy this book, but it will be so much more meaningful if you do. I totally recommend it!

Neither Harrison nor Frankie could be said to have ideal childhoods and both have skewed views of what makes a family. They soon find themselves playing house while helping the one man they both care about the most.

Down for the Word Count is the third book in the Unlucky in Love series. It could be read as a stand-alone but I would recommend reading the other two books in the series first. There are open-door scenes, along with plenty of sassy banter and swoony moments.

The MCs have one of the best, most awkward meet-cutes. While I loved the other two books in this series, I feel like I’ve been waiting for Harrison’s story from the first moment he showed up on page. He already had family in his Terraformative co-stars but it was really lovely to see him open up to others and fold more people into his trusted circle. Frankie struggles with being parentified from such a young age and Harrison also has difficulties that stem from him being forced to grow up too fast. They end up balancing each other well and being exactly what each other needs.

I appreciate the thoughtful but realistic way in which the author presents several of what could be considered difficult topics throughout the book. “Watching” George’s condition take over is heartbreaking but it’s one of the more genuine examples of dementia that I’ve come across in a romance book. Joey is absolutely villainous and I cannot be convinced otherwise.

I hope this isn't the last book in the series, but if it is, all three books have great re-readability. I can’t wait to see what Piper Sheldon has next for her readers.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This one surprised me so much. To have so much emotion poured into each scene and character down to the page and word was incredibly surprising and yet completely expected when you consider that Piper Sheldon is truly one of the most thoughtful contemporary romance authors out there.

Harrison and Frankie both grapple with inner demons, and Imposter Syndrome in their own way. How can you be an actor and have a disability? How can you raise a child when your own mother abandoned you? How can you hold a secret for a caregiver when their reality is slowly slipping away?

I savored this book in chunks. The reality beloved George was facing is too similar to a loved one in my own family. Sheldon writes George’s struggle with respect and honesty. For that I am in awe and grateful.

This was such a great end to the series. ❤️
There was such a variety of complex family dynamics shown in the book and it really made it all that much better. Reading about George dealing with the beginning onset of dementia choked me up a couple of times.

I really appreciated seeing this version of Harrison as it felt like we were given a different one in the previous books and we got to know him so much better in this one.

I loved his and Francesca’s relationship. The only frustration was that the miscommunication was sometimes a bit too much for me. I did really appreciate that there was no third act break-up, as they already had enough ups and downs.

This book was… everything. It was a little slow to start, which felt necessary to build the background of the couple and story, but once it got going I couldn’t stop. I had to set it down to sleep and just kept thinking about it until I could dice back in. Both Frankie and Harrison are such complex characters, with deep seated fears and traumas. The author did a wonderful job of keeping the characters true to themselves while allowing them to grow together. I laughed and cried and had anxiety and ALL the emotions. And that ending! 😩❤️

Down for the Word Count is Sheldon’s 3rd and final book the in Unlucky in Love series about a trio of grown-up child actors from the fictional TV show “Terraformitive”, based on a best-selling series of books. It can be read as a stand-alone, but the previous books provide a lot of groundwork, especially Better Date Than Never, which has a tiny bit of overlap.

This was definitely the most emotional of the series. Frankie, our FMC, has been hired to help her foster dad, George, write the final book in the Terraformitive series because he has Alzheimer’s/dementia. She’s also been taking care of her sister’s daughter, Collete. Frankie’s mom left her and her sister when they were young and her sister is almost exactly the same, leaving Collette with George and Frankie. When her sister is in town, she also belittles her, so her self-worth is pretty low. Frankie feels it’s in her DNA that she’ll never be enough.

Harrison and his two best friends and co-stars grew up with George and spent every summer at his house in Northern California. He’s always seen George as a surrogate father because his family really had only been in his life for what he could provide them. He’s in town to visit and sees how much Frankie has on her plate and decides to stay and help. He has feelings for her but has always been the “good time guy” and doesn’t feel worthy of her, that he can’t be counted on.

Both characters achieve a lot of growth throughout the book, and I loved all the elements of found family and how that helped them grow. They both just really want what’s best for both George and Collette.
Harrison is very sweet with Collette, and I love how encouraging he was with her and in teaching her how to treat people with kindness and respect. It rubs off on Frankie and she sees how she should have been treated by others.

In addition to being emotional, it also has Piper’s quintessential humor and spice. It was the perfect way to round out the series and is my favorite of the three.

Thank you to the author. I voluntarily read an early copy of this book

Down for the Word Count is the perfect book for me right now. I've been all up in my dragon fantasy tbr for quite a while. DftWC brought me back to real life struggles in human family dynamics in the most wonderful story. The feels are REAL! I silent-happy-cried through the whole last chapter.

Harrison is much different than I had imagined him from the two previous books in the Unlucky in Love series. I had an impression of a cocksure Brit with sharp wit and few worries, only to find a much more complex and unfulfilled man in these pages. George, Frankie and Collette are the perfect salve for his unhealed need for his very own family.

Frankie is a bristly fixture in Georges family household, keeping things together with hope, love and determination. Their meet cute was perfect, throwing them both off course and into each others path. Frankie is easy to understand with her backstory revealed. I rooted for both of them to realise their perceived weaknesses were the strengths the other needed.

Terraformative will always be a part of their lives as will Emma and Charlie and all those they bring with them. I firmly believe that family is who you choose not who you are related to, this group has proven it.

I hear this might not be the last book in this series and that makes my heart happy. The Intrepid Trio are romantically squared away after this fraught story. I'm looking forward to seeing them check in during the "other" character stories.

5+ - another incredible one, Pipes!

I’m so sad this is the last book in the Unlucky in Love trilogy… but wow, Piper, you sure gave us one heck of an ending to the series! What a way to close it out! I adored every single word of all three books, but this one? You’ve really outdone yourself this time, girl! I know I fangirl with every book and every review (no, I haven’t read everything because I still have to read the Unseen series… and where is that alien llama sequel?!), but it’s always true. You are an absolutely brilliant writer.

I’m in love with Harrison and Frankie and their story - how he dropped his beloved acting career to be there for George (the writer of the book series that brought about his TV series) as he ages and his memory is fading, and help out Frankie in her auntie and childcare duties while she’s working with George on the grand finale book in his life’s work. While they got off on the wrong foot and she had the very wrong opinion of him, the forced proximity definitely helped to see the true version of him. When she’s dealing with terrible family issues, he and George are her rocks, by her side.

The appearances from the other series characters is always a favorite thing of mine and they spend plenty of time here - but we needed more Agata!

I loved it the whole way through and I devoured it so quickly - I’m going to need to do a full series re-read very soon, with all three back-to-back. They’re just all such fantastic stories (Down For the Word Count definitely the best of them all, my fave), and top recommendations from me, for all of you!

I received an early copy from the author, and this is my honest feedback.

Harrison finally gets the family he deserves and wished for! After getting to know Harrison bits by bits in the first two books you could tell he would need someone really special and fiercely loving as his partner, but he was not prepared for Frankie. Fierce for sure, but she would never consider herself as loving. But she is, most definitely, as she will discover thanks to Harrison.

Harrison and Frankie's story is healing, both for them and for the reader. You get to know this immense love towards a chosen family through weird and amazing characters and that these bonds can be stronger than you believe. It is sweet, heartwarming, moving, I may have squealed, laughed and cried with this book (as I did with the first two). Colette and George are amazing and by themselves they could conquer the world, one cookie at the time.

This series is seriously amazing, tackling serious and important themes with incredible funny, quirky and deep characters that feel like you've known them forever.

This book is so much more than a “found family” story. It’s the story of 4 people who were accepted and ultimately loved by one another, each in the way they needed. The bar was set so very high for this book, since the first two books in the series were amazing stories in their own ways, but this story is so heartwarming and charming. I fell in love with Frankie, Harrison, Collette, and George from the very beginning. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Piper Sheldon is magical.

Hilarious, SEXY, banter-y end to the intrepid trio! Harrison and Frankie’s love story is a really funny, lovely mix of love at first sight and slow burn with banter, soulful hero swooniness, and just for funsies — poignant life lessons on what makes a family ❤️

*mild spoilers*

The story starts off with a bang, the energy of the meet cute making it hard to put the book down! I LOVED Frankie — the heroine, her flaws and characterization were perfection! Also, Piper Sheldon knows exactly how to write kids — her six year old was spot on. The love story was exactly what I love in a romance- a fast pasted beginning, slow burn spice and chemistry, a spicy delivery when *spoiler* the couple does get together and then black moment intrigue without feeling abrupt or contrived.

Would you need to read the first two books in this stand alone series before you read this? No—but, like, they were great so you should read them. I mean, if you’ve read this review so far I feel like you’re already pot committed, right?

Bravo on a lovely series and ending! ❤️🙌🏻💓 it

A heartwarming story that tackles you in a bear hug on page one.

I love how Piper Sheldon expertly weaves elements of humor, the heat of intimacy, and tug-your-heartstrings emotion into one beautifully crafted novel. Harrison and Frankie go on an amazing journey. This one was a joy to read.

I’m giving this one 5 stars as it pulled out all the emotions and my heart ached at certain points. I loved the journey Harrison and Frankie went on together and how they grew throughout the journey. I loved the bigger role George played in this book and loved having the Charlie and Kate (and Agata) and Emma and Wesley, from the previous books, involved too.

My heart is full. This book really did tug at my heart in the best sort of ways.

Harrison, oh Harrison. I just loved him so. All he wanted in life was a family. I ached for him as he pinned over Frankie. How he felt alone in the world.

And Frankie, she was a little broken bird trying to do the best for her niece.

I have to say after reading a lot of books with kids, this one felt true to the spirit of a 6 year old.

This was a well written book and series. I’m sad but it was a beautifully written end.

What a good series to come full circle. I enjoyed the journey with the cast of Terrformative. They each had such good stories. Harrison and Frankie deserved everything they received with one another. Collette was such a cute kid, and I could just ring her mother's neck. Collette had all she needed in Frankie, George, and Harrison. She did not need her virus of a mother in her life. Their HEA was so sweet.

**************

Down for the Word Count is the 3rd and final volume of the Unlucky in Love series by Piper Sheldon, after Charlie and Kate, then Emma and Wesley, it's the turn of Harrison to find his true love in Frankie.

Harrison is the golden boy of the Intrepid Trio, the only one continuing to act in films. He doesn't have a bad reputation, but let's say he's more the one you call to party than when you have a problem, only Charlie and Emma know him very well, for the rest of the world, he's just an actor, almost a cliché of himself. However, since his two best friends found their other half, he begins to tire of his lifestyle and longs for more tranquility and to also have someone to love.

When he learns that Georges, the author of the books from which his TV series was adapted, does not give any news to his publisher, he decides to visit him to check that everything is okay, and at the same time take a break from his life with the one person who was like a father to him.

Frankie's life has been turned upside down in recent months : her sister left her 6-year-old daughter, Colette, in her arms to go try her luck and become an actress. Unable to take care of Colette on her own, Frankie came to live with the only person who gave her stability : Georges. He was her foster family when she was a teenager, and today he welcomes them both into his big house. Georges hired her to sort through all his work : his books, his notes, interviews, memorabilia etc...

Frankie doesn't need more complications, but the complications arrive all the same : first with Harrison, he wants to help her take care of Georges and Colette, Frankie has difficulty trusting him, especially that he awakens in her all kinds of feelings that she thought she no longer felt.
Then it's Colette's mother who arrives leaving false hopes for her daughter, Frankie will have to clear things up with her sister because Colette needs stability.

Frankie and Harrison are both immediately attracted to each other, but they will have to overcome their preconceptions and discover that they are much more than what they let on on the surface. They each have their own reason for not giving in straight away. Their romance was inevitable, they were made for each other.

In my reviews of the previous volumes, the fictional TV series and the fanbase reminded me a lot of Firefly, here Geogres also reminded me of Terry Pratchett. This volume closes the trilogy very well. I recommend it !

I really wanted to like this more but for most of the book I just couldn’t deal with Frankie. She was just so annoying!

George, the guy that wrote the books that resulted in the tv show he was on is sick. He gets a call saying he isn’t answering and hasn’t submitted his last book, so Harrison goes to see if he is ok. He has early dementia.

When he gets there Frankie is helping look after him and her niece. George fostered her and her sister when they were kids. Her sister is on tour with a theatre group and dumped her kid wit George.

Frankie needs help, she is looking after George and Colette, looking after the house and working at her friends shop all while secretly writing his last book.

Harrison agrees to help and takes over looking after Colette, making sure she gets to school and feeding her and what not.

While Colette has some friends over and Harrison is playing pirates she come home and he has burnt some cupcakes and she flips out. It was totally uncalled for. He was doing a great job and Colette adored him and she tells him he needs to leave. She was so harsh I didn’t really like her from then on

Then her sister turns up only because Harrison is there. She flirts with him and Frankie gets mad and says they have plans and drags him to a festival. One minute she is kicking him out then she’s inviting him on a date cos she is jealous#

When they get back the sister has lost George. Frankie -who I thought was finally going to stand up to her sister blames Harrison. Hang on, if he had left when you told him to he wouldn’t have been there anyway but he could have been there but you dragging him away out of jealousy. Now I disliked her even more and Harrison is thinking that she right, that is his fault. How is it your fault?

When he does find George the conversation they have is beautiful and heart-breaking.

The sister leaves in the middle of the night not even saying bye to her daughter.

Harrison thinks so little of himself and I just don’t get it. He love Frankie -for some reason- but says he doesn’t deserve her. I think it’s the other way round to be honest. Frankie is thinking she needs to find a family for her niece so she can get back on the road which I just didn’t understand cos one minute she’s saying ‘that little girl means the world to me’ and the next ‘ill find a family who will love her’

Then the sister shows back up ad kidnaps Colette to sell her to YouTube family and we have all seen those documentary’s of how bad kids are treated. Frankie finally decides she wants Colette and races to ger her back.

They get her back and live happily ever after. I wanted more of an ending for the last book considering what all the couples went through to be together

I don’t think this author is British or spoke to many British people. What is bullocks? Its actually bollocks and the misuse of it pissed me off. In one quite intense scene his said it and it took me out of the scene. Also the trio saying hullo, we don’t say hullo we would more likely say ello

Harrisons relationship with Colette saved this book. I honestly feel he could do better than Frankie

Spice- 🌶 🌶

Series- Unlucky in Love #3

Troupes- Instant attraction, forced Proximity, Single Guardian, grumpy sunshine, himbo hero

Representation- ADHD, Anxiety

CW- on page panic attack.

OMG PIIIIPER! Harrison is everything I ever wanted and so much more! I have been loving this series about 3 Actors growing up in on a major TV show set and navigating life and love afterwards à la Harry Potter. I have loved Pipers world building for the Fictional world as well as the ‘real’ one and these 3 fictional humans who are famous and flawed and finding their HEA.

This is Harrisons’s book, he the “good time guy” and was the Star of the smash hit Terraformative, he has a lucrative acting career and is always surrounded by people, but something is missing. When he goes “home” to help care for an aging long time friend he’s faced with the woman he hasn’t been able to get out of his head.

Frankie never expected to be in this one place for so long, care giver to not just her foster father but her 6 year old niece. A found family she never expected to want let alone have and when Harrison shows up and convinces her he can help she suddenly could have everything she ever wanted. But it’s just temporary, right?

I love this two so much I latched to them way back when Frankie was first introduced and have been waiting to found out how this story was going to unfold.

It’s wonderful, the tension, the mutual pinning, the found family, the small town feels, the 6 year old who is as adorable as she is real, the spicy times that were plentiful but tasteful 😉 and of course Pipers phenomenal storytelling.

If you want 20th anniversary HP vibes with a himbo Hero and grumpy Heroine, with one of the best found families I’ve read this book is for you.

It also can stand by its self but its so much better if you read the first 2.

Thank you Piper Sheldon for an advanced copy, all the gushing and opinions are my own!

I went in to this book without knowing much of the premise. I hadn't read the first two books (yet) and wasn't lost at all.
This isn't a RomCom- I thought that it was- cute cover!
There a few funny moments though. The meet cute is really good & very original.
I love Frankie (heroine) and Harrison (hero). I had such empathy for them. Harrison is an actor (not my favorite occupation) -he stole my heart. He's very successful but hasn't exactly had a charmed life. I also loved Frankie from the get go. She's a very giving person & really tightly wound up with her responsibilities. They both have George in common. He's a father figure to them - at different times when they were kids. Frankie & Harrison first meet in the opening scene in the book.
Gah, Piper's writing is so good. I didn't want this to end. I saw author Ann Patchett on Tiktok speaking about taking her time with a book that she's loving. I 100% agree with that.
I also have to say that THIS book is pulling me out of my worst book slump ever. 2023 has had more reading dips for me. Piper, Kennedy Ryan & Abby Jimenez are my high spots. I think that it's been my irregular reading times& shorter attention span.
Back to this book- besides George, there is adorable, sweet Collette. She's 6 y/o going on 26. Not obnoxious at all- like I fear for child characters. She's Frankie's niece. Her mom Joey is a piece of work. Joey is a hot mess who neglects Collette & gaslights Frankie every chance she gets.
This is character driven, finding your family. Frankie and Harrison have their ah ha moments- each on their own- which I loved & found very natural.
OYE, I could go on and on. The book title is just part of the plot.
I received an ARC copy of this book, but I'm going to get the paperback & ask Piper to sign it for me & say thanks for writing this for me. And--- I need to go back & read the other 2 books !!

What a wonderful ending to this series. George Sedar, the father of the Terraformative world, starts having memory problems and needs help finishing the last book of the series, so there is Frankie, one of the children George and his late partner William fostered, to help him write the book, while she also helped cataloguing all the Terraformative memorabilia of a lifetime, she helps in the local bookstore and she takes care of eight year old Colette, the niece her sister Josephine left under her care to pursue a career as an actress. And then arrives Harrison, one of the Terraformative child actors George took care of during and since the filmings, who suddenly finds himself helping Frankie with George, Colette and the book.

This is a story of two broken souls, and how childhood traumas impact adult lives, how fears and insecurities can ruin something beautiful, and how love can unite the most unsuspecting people.
I love how Piper Sheldon can make you laugh while you're ugly crying, and how carefully she treads on topics like trauma, mental health, insecurities, and even social media abuse of children. Both Frankie and Harrison are adorable, and the secondary characters are great, as always. Even Agatha has a short cameo (I love that woman, LOL).

This is a wonderful story, and it made me happy to read that these characters may appear again on future stories. It will be like reuniting with old friends. can't wait for whatever she writes next. Slowly but surely she has become one of my autobuy authors.

“I feel like I’ve known you.”

To quote one of George & Frankie’s early reviewers, “Excuse me as I weep into my pillow for weeks”. Same, KS, same! The third and final book in Piper Sheldon’s Unlucky In Love series, Down For the Word Count is hands-down my favorite. From the first moments with Harrison, his awkward meet-cute with Frankie, to the last page my whole heart was caught up in their love story. Piper Sheldon has a spectacular storytelling style that blends dynamic & loveable characters, compelling & heartfelt plots, and deliciously steamy romance. Down for the Word Count explores the complexities of relationships, family dynamics, and the power of a positive, loving community. I loved getting to spend more time with George, Colette, and the Intrepid Trio! I immediately connected with Harrison; he’s an affable, charismatic, dreamboat actor who craves a more down-to-earth life than the constant pressure of the spotlight. Piper writes wonderful cinnamon roll book boyfriends and oh boy did my heart melt for Harrison. He had a lovely, natural rapport with six-year-old Colette. I adored Frankie from the first second! She is a kindhearted guardian and caregiver, an adorkable bookworm, and fiercely loyal. She is such a genuine, sweet, and loving book bestie striving to give Colette a more stable, supportive childhood than she had. I loved the way Piper wrapped up this wonderful series. I was on the edge of my seat or on the verge of sobbing for the last third of this book! Down for the Word Count is a fantastic found family, opposites attract, emotional love story.

One of the best thing about this series is that it really hammers home the best part of found family. This book especially just makes my heart so happy.

With a little bit of a slow burn to start in this book, this book has that really good tension to leads to big feelings. Harrison and Frankie are definitely opposites attract, and both a a good amount of baggage they bring to the relationship.

I just love how the author sneaks in little things into the book, especially as it relates to character growth or in this instance the name of the series.

The author did a fantastic job of bringing the real life grief of losing someone to dementia, as they slowly lose themselves. This book does get emotional at time, but the portrayal of this grief was especially well done. But there are very bright happy emotional moments too, which you may tear up from as well (because I definitely did).

I’m sad to see this series end, but the ending wrapped up these books so well, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

There is so much to love about this book. Actually, there is a lot to love about the whole series! I love the cute word play in the titles, the thorough set up in the first book of all three main characters, the ability of the author to continue the storyline of all the characters throughout the series without it feeling cumbersome or forced. Each character finds themselves in a complex situation that I didn't see coming before starting each book. The author does an excellent job of digging a little deeper and providing extra insight on each character. Reading Harrison and Frankie's story was so much fun and a definite page-turner for me. The secondary characters, Collette and George, are some of my favorites. I'm not doing a very good job of explaining why I'm a fan of this book. It's so, so good! I'll just say that the characters are endearing, honest and feel true. The plot/story line is excellent, enjoyable, tugs at the heart a bit, isn't shallow or overdramatic, and has excellent editing. With such smart writing, I highly recommend grabbing this book!
