The Eagle’s Shadow is a profusely illustrated celebration of all things eagle, by a naturalist who has kept eagles himself and ridden with the eagle tribes of Central Asia.”
Gorgeous pictures and I learnt some fun facts about eagles however after 50% I stopped- the writing style wasn't great (also the intro by Annie Proulx made me doubt that I want to read one of her books, not great writing either). To finish on a positive note, some eagle fun facts I learnt: 1. Aquila is their Latin name, 2. The females are the bigger, stronger ones (and they get used for hunting wolves in Mongolia!), 3. A baby eagle is called an eaglet, 4. Bald eagles often steal the pray other birds and hence were not deemed to be a fitting symbol for the young US (instead the Turkey was favoured), 5. The stronger eaglet kills its baby brother or sister in the nest (known as Cainism after Cain and Abel in the bible) and hence eagle parents only ever raise one young despite almost always laying two eggs!
Ps: The last two books highlight how unlucky and lucky you can be by picking up a random read- "Hitler at home" was amazing, this one a bit beige. But as "The female eunuch" illustrated, you can even pick up a highly praised book which you have been meaning to read for ages and by pg.24 be furious with the author for their inaccessible writing style throwing it deeply disappointed into a corner. To rephrase Forest Gump "A book is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get".
