A Curious Heart

Rate this book
When Allie Pendleton arrives in London for her first season, she never dreams the extent of her adventure. More interested in making matches for her relatives than pursuing her own love life, Allie stirs up trouble with her secret intrigues and vast curiosity.

Lady Alana, has declared herself on the shelf—but when The Earl of Rothburn shows a spark of interest, Allie begins to plot a romance between the pair. When her brother, Sir Gordon, evinces interest in Lady Eleanor, Allie expands her project to include them.

The problem to be solved? Lady Eleanor is engaged to The Earl of Rothburn, and Sir Gordon is his best friend. Though without attachments, Lady Alana refuses to be wooed, not trusting men.

All these threads come together in a crossroads of happily ever after when Allie finally meets the man who will steal her heart.

The earl's cousin, Griffin, comes to town and sweeps Allie off her feet, but she cannot persuade him to aid her in her attempts to change the romantic alliances of the their relatives.

The plot thickens as the three couples struggle to maintain their reputations and standing in society, while juggling their romantic inclinations. Add a cantankerous old countess with vicious intent, and a melodramatic countess with thespian inclinations to the brew and you have the makings of a wonderful Regency Romp.

When we first meet Allie, she's eavesdropping on a conversation between her brother, Sir Gordon, and the Earl of Rothburn. What she overhears leaves her heartbroken... at least for a few hours. Soon she is merrily plotting to entice Rothburn to marry her beloved yet formidable aunt, Lady Alana (even though society has been given to understand Rothburn will wed Lady Eleanor... who just so happens to be smitten with Sir Gordon). Confused yet? Enter Griffin, the Earl's cousin, who is instantly smitten with Allie. Lady Alana wants nothing to do with romance, and resists Rothburn at every turn, and Griffin vacillates between wanting to finish his schooling and travel to the continent for a bit, and wanting to wed Allie instantly, even with no means for support. Add in a pair of squabbling, interfering society matrons, and there's a whole cast of not-entirely-likable characters. They just kind of drift through the story, not really doing a whole lot but talking and plotting and generally interfering with one another's lives.
Sprinkled throughout the last quarter of the book is magic, as if the author ran out of ways to fix the problems she had created and needed something to mend the story. It really was a bit discordant, and felt more of an easy fix. It wasn't explained or dealt with in any way, it just solved all the problems. Likewise, many other problems were resolved in a sentence or two, with little drama. it gave it an overall feel of incoherence, with things hopping from topic to topic and nothing really developed. It was hard to pay attention to what was happening, because I just couldn't become involved with the character's lives.
That said, there were enough scenes that were enjoyable woven throughout the story to make it a cute story. I would recommend it only if you had nothing better to do, and are willing to wander through the pages looking for the few gems..

good regency romance -- supernatural twist at the end seemed a little odd
