Jenny Haddon was born in London, England, where she always returns after the travels that she loves. When she was small, her mother couldn't bear reading aloud, so her mother taught her to read at an appallingly precocious age. She wrote her first book with her own illustrations at the age of four but was in her 20s before she produced her first romance as Sophie Weston.

She studied English Language and Literature at university. Choosing a career was a major problem. It was not so much that she didn't know what she wanted to do, as that she wanted to do everything. So she filed and photocopied and experimented. She worked as consultant at the Bank of England and all the time she drew on her experiences to create her Mills & Boon books. She edited press releases for a Latin American embassy in London (The Latin Afffair); lectured in the Arabian Gulf (The Sheikh's Bride); waitressed in Paris (Midnight Wedding); and made herself hated by getting under people's feet asking stupid questions under the grand title of consultant all over the world (The Millionaire's Daughter). She also is an active member of the UK's Romantic Novelists' Association's Committee, and was its twenty-three Chairman (2005-2007).

Jenny has one house, three cats, and about a million books. She writes compulsively, Scottish dances poorly, grows more plants than she has room for, and makes a mean meringue.

Interesting enough story of an "ugly duckling" heroine who is a management consultant and a commitment-phobe, architect hero. They meet at a dinner party and heroine is convinced her stepmother has set them up and that's why the hero is being so nice.

Heroine thinks she's ugly because her younger stepsister is beautiful and because her live-in boyfriend cheated on her. She has decided she will devote her life to her career and forget dating. Hero is intrigued with her and hires her to change his office protocols.

They hurt each other's feelings and eventually get together. The heroine's step sister will have her own book after this one.

It's been a coupe of days since I read this and many details are escaping me. That tells you what kind of book it is.

Just okay.

The heroine is the plain / ugly duckling but accomplished daughter of a millionaire. The Hero seems immediately attracted, but because of her low esteem, she can’t believe it.

I liked that the hero was not some billionaire 🙄 again. He is a hard working successful architect who is a bit disorganized and his firm has grown so fast, he needs the heroine’s management consultancy firm to help him out.

This story is one that I have a hard time describing. It has me waffling between a 3 and 4 but because it is doubtful I would feel the need to read again, it gets the 3.

First off the heroine is not my typical go-to. She is career minded, 29, and not a virgin. However, she is extremely vulnerable under her hard veneer. She deems herself an “ugly duckling” with a much prettier step sister. She has a scar on her face which is easily covered by bangs. However, when the scar happened at the tender age of 10, her mom made a disparaging remark and ended up leaving the dad shortly after that. So our better than average looking heroine believes she runs a close second to Quasimodo.

Our hero is your typical tall dark and handsome. He is about 36 years old, and is not commitment minded with most of his relationships lasting a month where he lets his lady loves draw conclusions that it has come to an end on their own(doesn’t feel the need to return messages etc..) I don’t even think he offers the obligatory break up flowers or bling because the relationships are so short lived.

Our h, Annis and the H, Kosta meet at one of her step moms social gatherings. Our h is immediately put on high alert as her stepmom is always trying to set her up. The h was burned in her last relationship, so she is pretty determined to avoid entanglements where her heart may get mangled. She thought she was walking into a small family dinner and arrived out of the pouring rain wearing her business attire. She sees the Hero talking to her dad and realizes that he is meant for her. The H makes a beeline for her and she disavows him right away of any romantic notions, basically telling him she is a 29 year old workaholic who never dates. He is taken aback by this little attack and slightly offended. (She finds out later he was not the man deemed for her, her step mom had an actor in mind. Of course realizing her attack on him she is now embarrassed.)

What occurs next is a story where two people with electricity brewing through them are engaged in little bit of a balancing act. Tipping ever so slightly in one direction and then back again. This story is full of dialogue between them. We learn a lot through what is not said out loud but what is thought. He ends up employing the h as what could be deemed as an efficiency expert(which is what she does for companies) During the course of the story they open up to each other, and ended up having a great night of sex only to have the h pull back. The H is wondering what kind of game the h is playing and he gets upset with the h, says a few things, and takes off for Milan. She continues to work at his business getting it streamlined . The H comes to an epiphany and he sends for the h(she is unaware that she will be meeting him specifically) She shows up at his castle. They end up having several days of love and come to an understanding. He has to return to Milan but insists he will call her later, she says she will be waiting by the phone.

However, once back in town she gets disturbing news about the hero from her mom. Her heart is broken, and when the hero calls and calls her that night she ignores it. Her sister comes to her rescue and lets her know that the mom really didn’t know what she was talking about. She needs to go after her man(he returned to London once the h wouldn’t pick up the phone).

She goes after the Hero, and they make their declarations. Better yet there is an epilogue 6 months later. I guess we will see their wedding in the sister’s story The Bridesmaid's Secret

There was some great tension in this story and with all the dialogue it moved pretty quickly. I hope I will get to see a little more of this couple beyond their wedding in the sister’s story.

Liked both h and H. She was running scared and he gave her all the encouragement possible to stop long enough to fall in love.

I reread this and like more each time, much better than sister’s story.
