The year 2001 isn't the first millennium. Remember the year 1001? Or for that matter, January 1, 1? Here is delightful reading of some less-than-delightful predictions, from the early Hebrew prophets to medieval soothsayers, on through Nostradamus to modern-day mystics. What is so astounding is the number of their prophecies that have come true. This colorful book is lavishly illustrated with more than 200 photographs, paintings, and prints. Prophecies include the Second Coming of Christ, our world ravaged by disasters and war, and eventually peace on earth. (Nostradamus also predicted the sinking of part of England and the end of California!) The chapter, "Nature Meets the Supernatural," alone is worth the special low price of this book. Dr. Stephen Skinner, Ph.D. (Classics, University of Newcastle, 2014) author, editor, publisher, and lecturer. He is known for authoring books on magic, feng shui, sacred geometry, and alchemy. He has published more than 46 books in more than 20 languages.
This book is fucking awesome. It has ways the world could end I've never thought of (shifting magnetic fields, sun spots, unholy beasts), and even the ones I have heard of are referred to in weird ways, like calling meteors "bombs from heaven."
Anyway, there is also a nice section on Mormanism in the cults section, including this, about the genealogical information they've buried under a mountain: "It is a comforting thought that if the world were wiped out by some apocalyptic cataclysm, the details of all these people would be available for inspection at some remote time in the future."
A skim over various realistic and unrealistic prophecies, probably didn't help that reading it in 2020 means that some of the text looks a bit daft in hind-sight.
Interesting to read this type of thing now that we all know the world failed to end in the year 2000, well unless you believe the idea that we were all converted into a giant computer program and now we are just little bits of information floating through a silicon chip.
