Lucky Lucas is back in The Damage, set in the colorful, edgy, and seductive city of San Francisco. Lucky Lucas, a widowed ex-Police Detective, has relocated from Southern California to San Francisco to be near his son’s family. As a favor to a friend, Lucas agrees to locate Diane Berger, an eighteen year old girl who has suddenly disappeared from her wealthy parent’s Russian Hill home. Lucas locates the girl in Venice Beach, but not before stumbling upon a corpse in the apartment where she has been staying. Blackmail and marital infidelities result in additional collateral damage and homicides, while Diane Berger’s maturation from teen-age girl to a young woman hungry for independence is fueled through her friendship with Mona, Lucas' girlfriend, and her new mentor.
I loved this book just like the last one. Lucky seems to have a knack for getting in over his head when he tries to help. The way that the author gives the extra details and the sincerity he uses as he ties in the emotions. Like with continuing to help Diane even after he had done what he had told her parents. Mona's involvement makes it even more real and captivation. Oh, and the nagging feelings that Lucky has about being just the doting grandfather is so cute. Along with his dog and how he is so concerned with the dogs care.
San Francisco is his home base and you can tell that Mark has done his homework in the set up for continuing Lucky's tales. If you like mystery, murder and a really good guy then toss in a little romance this book will give you everything you want and more. I am looking forward to more from this author.
This was a really interesting book. It was not my favorite, but it was okay. It had some foul language in it, so that wasn’t the best. It still kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what happens next.
I really liked the characters in this book. The detective guy was really cool, and I liked the way he spoke to some possible witnesses. I honestly thought he would not find the girl, but in the end, he did. I thought it would have been a lot harder to find the girl, but he made it look easy.
I would recommend this book to people who like mysteries. It is not predictable like some mysteries. So if you like to be on the edge of your seat while reading a book, then this would be a good book for you.
Pretty good book. I felt like I knew something about the main character in the book, but that I hadn't learned much about the rest of the characters. I think a little more filling out of them may have helped me to enjoy the book more.
If you're a fan of Robert Parker's Spencer novels, you will enjoy Mark Gummere. His style of writing is very similar including the one liners, shady sidekicks and simple whodunits. Gummere's detective, Lucky Lucas, also lives by his own moral code.
Lucas is a retired cop from Pasadena now living in the San Francisco area. He gets a call from the Bergers. They want him to find their missing daughter, Diane. Only problem is she is eighteen and an adult. Lucas does it anyway and that's where things go wrong.
#2 --- I like Lucky, enjoy Mona, wish Lucky would not get too involved in trouble, yeah, like that will happy. I feel like I read in between politics, lololol
