The Lonely Walk: A Zombie Notebook

Rate this book
He and his family are sequestered in their home by curfew law, but the newborn baby needs milk. Milk, like many other supplies, is delivered by the military, but the deliveries are undependable.

He has to get out of the house, though it means he will risk getting caught by a horde of the dead and become infected. But this man won't let his baby die and his wife go insane. If he never comes back, at least he tried...

His notebook, kept after he's out in the world, lets us know he's now zombie. But he can think. He'd rather be dead, really dead.

Now where's he going to go, since he can never go home again? Can he find someone else like him? And who will believe him unless he keeps a notebook...?

A novella of the dead by the author of BANISHED and the Edgar Award nominated NIGHT CRUISING.

A very contemplative novella. I'm always interested in seeing "the other side", and the perception that the narrator has of his own bodily decay is gruesome. The story however is very light on plot, and the message if there is one is unclear.

"The Lonely Walk" by Billie Sue Mosiman is a really quite good little short story. The author has penned many, many short stories and not-so-short stories, and has a firm grasp on the macabre. This one is no exception. The Lonely Walk is engaging, with a good dose of the melancholy about it. Yet, it is totally unlike any zombie story you've ever read before. It is refreshingly different.

The Lonely Walk features a father who risks everything to go outside during a zombie viral apocalypse in order to find milk for his infant daughter. Against his wife's urging, he orders her to stay inside and wait until his return. But, of course, the car won't start and the nearest store is four miles away. So he sets off walking, and goes along just fine for three miles. But then something very, very bad happens; will he return home with the milk? Will he return home at all?

I recommend this story for all readers who enjoyed the old "Twilight Zone" episodes on television, or who just enjoy the bizarre, the weird, the unnatural, or the macabre. It's an entertaining story, and can be read quickly, making it ideal to read while standing in line somewhere, or waiting at the doctor's office for them to finally call your name. It will also surprise you, as it is unlike a typical zombie story. Definitely a good buy.

Really great

The progressive decay of the body and mind of a man after he becomes a zombie was a unique story, and very well executed. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, not only zombie lovers. There is actually no blood and guts in this book at all, but it is still one of the best zombie books out there. This was the first book I read by the author and I am now on my way to seek out more...

This short story is very emotional from the very beginning. It starts with a man who doesn't want to sit and watch is family die and turns in to a horror that no man should ever have to face. I have never read a zombie story like this, where you can learn through the eyes of a dead man what it means to want to live.
