The title feels a little deceptive. I'd say this is more of a book about adjectives and opposites rather than moving. Not a good fit for parents looking for books about moving to a new house.
Moving day was a super adorable book which addressed the issue of accepting new change in your life. As the little crab was searching for a new shell he tried on big shells, little shells, wide shells, and tall shells. Through the book he can not seem to find the right shell for himself. In the end he ends up finding his shell and it was a lot like the first shell he had. This reminds me of home and how even if everything changes, home will remain. Home is where family is, and that is where love and consistency is. This book can also help children who are having a hard time adjusting to change, children who may be in foster care, to know they will one day find their home.
Shells are one of the habitats the first graders in my class study. We read fictional stories about hermit crabs and non-fiction books about many kinds of animals that live in shells. Along with "A House for Hermit Crab" by Eric Carle and "Is This a House for Hermit Crab?" by Megan McDonald, I read this book. Moving Day features many descriptive words that are also opposites (i.e. fancy/plain, smooth/rough, little/big) – great for both speaking and writing standards. On several pages, the illustrations have tiny, humorous details that my students enjoy discovering. Great book!
This is a simple book great for beginner readers. There is a lot of repetition and it is predictable. I also think it would be good to show kids who are moving to a new home. It has cute illustrations with a sweet little hermit crab that tells the story.
