Kylie Mitchell lives in a world of monsters. Thanks to a military experiment gone viral, over half the population is gone and most of what remains has mutated into storybook werewolves and vampires. In this new Earth, only the tough survive, and Kylie has more than enough reason to want to be left alone.
When the Council of the Wise decrees that she must mate with a potent vampire and a powerful werewolf, Kylie resents their intrusion into her self-imposed exile. As one of the last humans on Earth, she always assumed she’d be safe from the super-psychics’ machinations, and she’s not ready to trust her heart to anyone.
Michael and Christian share no great love for each other, but they have one thing in common—their long-time desire for Kylie. Determined to ensure she doesn’t spend the rest of her lonely life wallowing in needless guilt, they choose to put aside their differences and work together, never allowing her time to think as they seduce her body and mind, hoping their love will tempt her heart to open to them.
Yet just as she begins to bloom under their fiercely protective attention, a twisted and monstrous figure from the past rises up, threatening to destroy everything…
Features a sexy werewolf, a motorcycle-riding vamp, and one very lucky woman who is tough enough to take care of herself. Watch out for sizzling hot sex scenes, two alpha males, undeniable love, and a twisted monster that might end it all.
Anya Bast is the author of numerous works of romantic fiction, mostly all paranormal and mostly all scorching hot. She lives in the country with her husband, daughter, eight cats, a dog, and an odd assortment of rescued animals.
She grew up in Minnesota and still favors the colder climates. After high school she moved to the southeast United States where she attended college. While in graduate school she sold her first book and decide to pursue her lifelong dream of writing instead of a career in psychology.
Somewhat reclusive by nature, she can be drawn out with a good bottle of red wine, classic movies, or good music. When she’s not writing, she can be found trying to grow organic vegetables, shopping in thrift stores for that perfect piece of clothing, or dreaming about travel to some faraway country.
She’s hard at work on a brand new series for Berkley Sensation right now, while winding up her national bestselling Elemental Witches quartet.
I tried a sample of this book from Samhain Publishing, liked the writing, and gave it a shot. It is the tale of a small community a generation after Doomsyear, when government experimental viruses got loose. They can do pretty much one of four things to you: turn you into a vampire, turn you into a werewolf, kill you outright – or leave you entirely alone, immune. (It can also render you a psychic, but that's very rare. There's another possibility which is rarer still which isn't discussed until it's necessary.) Most people die, including family members of our main characters.
Kylie's immune, plain vanilla human, and runs a vampire bar called The Twisted Kiss - a kiss being the name for a group of vampires (rather nicer than the Mercy Thompson world's seethe) – not that the bar has a huge amount to do with the plot, mind you. (Nor does Kylie's running of it mean much; she seems to be able to stay away whenever she likes without any problem, and has none of the stresses usually involved with running a business. In other words, the main reason to even make the bar's name the book's name is because it's a neat title. Not that the title has so much to do with the book, either …) It is, however, where we meet the three main characters, and find that Kylie has just been informed that the Powers That Be – the council, who are those psychics I mentioned – have chosen mates for her. This is common practice, post-Doomsyear, both the being chosen for and the plural; women are scarce, fertility is low, and the population is dangerously small, and in order to try to foster population growth the council uses its skills to set up ménages à trois that will be happy and fertile and lend themselves to some steamy paranormal romance writing. (But...if there are more females than males, isn't it odd that two males are matched with the same female?) Kylie, human, didn't expect the council to interfere with her, and digs in her heels about being dictated to; she also has a Deep Dark Reason not to want to be romantically involved, and that takes some getting past as well.
But of course there could be no two men more likely to get past, over, under, or through all of Kylie's objections and reluctances than Christian, a werewolf, and Michael, a vampire. It's unusual that a vamp and a were would be put in the same group, never mind with a human, but naturally this is special. They have both loved her and wanted her for a long time, of course, and now that it's sanctioned they're thrilled. Not about sharing – they make it abundantly clear that they're not interested in each other, heaven forfend, but they quickly come to a détente of cooperation in the area of convincing Kylie.
It's not a bad little book (it's a novella, technically). There are sparks of life to the characters, and sparks of character in the writing, and a tidily introduced straightforward world with a laudable minimum of info-dumping. There is, however, a bit of seriesitis at a couple of places in the book, something romance series that deal with a family of siblings or something similar tend toward: a very pointed setting-up nod toward the subjects of the next book in the series. (If I'm wrong about who the next book will be about, I'll be stunned.) The conflict that arises as that of Kylie's resistance goes away is surprising and interesting, but it is as quickly dealt with as Kylie's issues; the pace is brisk. Maybe a little too brisk: Kylie goes from "Absolutely. Friggin'. NOT." to "Hmm" to "Take me, I'm yours – and yours, too" in a remarkably short span of time. But when all's said and done the whole thing is basically a framework and an excuse for getting the three of them in bed. For what it is, it's fun; for anything more, it needs a great deal of work.
A couple of things you should know. Hard as try to read get to read Ms. Bast's books, I was still an Anya Bast virgin. This was my first book by her. Result? I love her writing and I'm now kicking myself that I didn't get to start reading her sooner. Will remedy this very soon. I am not much for post-apocalyptic stories, however lately there's been a lot of pretty good ones come out, especially when there's this much romance. Actually, this was almost more a paranormal erotic romance. Because ohhhh boy was it hot!
But first let me tell you about the story. Government experiment gone wrong, virus that kills most of the human population, some humans survive, some are forced to be turned into vampires of werewolves. The few humans still alive don't really go into supe territory. Except there this one girl that has lived among them pretty much her whole life, Kiley. She now own the vampire bar in town.
She wakes up one day to the news that the supernatural council, that consists of seers and oracles that have been somewhat of matchmakers, determined that she is to mate Michael, a vampire, and Christian, a werewolf. Now, how lucky can a girl be?
But because of her past she doesn't want a man, she feels that she already affected the life of her first love by turning him into a monster. Now Michael and Christian, who have wanted her for years, have to prove to her that they are soul mates. And when they both set to wooing, together and apart, there are major sparks and heat flying off the pages. HOT HOT HOT!
I am looking forward to more stories in this series, I'm sure her best friend will get one and I can't wait to read about her and the werewolf alpha (at least I'm hoping)!
This had potential, but I couldn't connect with either protagonist. all three of them felt like card-board cut-outs to me. On top of that the pacing seemed off. It felt similar to having a conversation with someone, who keeps changing the subject randomly. it jumped around with no transition from subject to subject.
I liked this world (a virus called part of the population, turned some to werewolves and vampires, and left the other part of the population alone). I thought the story was paced well considering the length.
First book that I have read by Anya Bast. I loved it. I am hoping for more to come in this series.
This series is about a society short on females, short on humans, and even on vampires and werewolves. The physics (powers that be) are few in this society as well but are respected and basically make the laws. Marriage is a thing of the past and now couples are comprised of one woman and two men much of the time. Few are far between are a mating of a human female, werewolf, and vampire. Christian (Wolf), Michael (vampire) and Kylie (human) are now one of those arrangements.
Kylie just wants to be left alone after the situation with Louis. Kylie does not want any relationships starting and she certainly does not want one with a vamp and a were, even if they are the hottest of hot. Michael is in love with Kylie and has been for quite a while as has Christian. Neither of the men want to share her but are forced to push their jealousy aside. They both want her and the only way one gets her is if the other one gets her too.
Michael & Christian come to an agreement on the Kylie situation and agree that both love her and do not want to give her up for the other one. They agree to get along for Kylie's sake. Kylie is hurt and feels as if she does not deserve love because of what happened between Louis and her and does not know what to do with these feelings. Kylie finds herself after one kiss from Christian wanting him with an intensity that scares her. Then Michael kisses her and the feelings of want and desire overtake her again. She feels like she is going crazy, she feels guilty and she feels like a slut.
Michael and Christian show her that it is okay to love both of them and they take in one step at a time.
this story had the potential to be epic. All the apocalyptic doomsday changes, the twists on legends and the glimpses of people surviving through it all could have been awesome with a little more in depth explanation and plot expansion. As it was the story was a bit much all at once for the length of it. But like all Ms. Bast's work it was sexy, fun, and intriguing. Looking forward to reading another book in this series.
I don't have much to say except "This had potential". The idea behind the story was pretty good (a virus brought doomsday to the world, wiping the human population and transforming people in monsters). Pity it was wasted in the usual menage with cardboard characters (even given its length, it could be avoided...) I almost dnf'ed it.
Sometimes you just need to kick some monster butt.
I've heard great things about Ms. Bast's books. Lots of good things. To be honest, I've got a couple of them on my shelves but I hadn't had time to read them. Until this book. Any reader wanting a taste of her work need look no further than The Twisted Kiss. The writing flows well, and although I wanted to learn more about the world these characters live in, I could still see it.
The world is in turmoil. Viruses and death are all around. Few humans are left. Talk about a sticky situation to be in. Kylie is one of those few humans left and she feels guilty everyday because of it. I identified with her "why them and not me" mentality. We've all been there - wishing we'd been the ones to suffer and not someone else. So yeah, she's got guilt.
Enter Michael and Christian. They don't like each other. Well, why not? One's a vamp and the other's a wolf. Duh. They probably shouldn't like each other, but there is one person they do like--Kylie. Talk about heat! Phew! I needed a couple cool drinks to get through this book. The boys steam up the pages trying to convince Kylie she's worthy of being alive and they are worthy of her.
Although I wanted to hang around with these characters a bit longer, I have to say the length of the book is just right. There's the right amount of heat and story and it is fast paced. No goofing around here. There are some twists and turns I didn't see coming. And yeah, I loved not being able to tell what would happen next. It kept the story line fresh for me.
If you want a book that's got a fierce heroine, two steamy heroes and some tricks you won't see coming, then you need to get The Twisted Kiss.
The world as we know has ended. The government has created a virus that has spread world wide and has killed off over 1/2 the population. They were trying to make the perfect solider. What was left of the population was made into weres or vampires or another super type being. There were a few humans to be genetically resistant to the virus. Some of the humans also carried a super virus and when triggered by the right DNA, disaster for the carrier. The person would be changed into a monster that is half shifted into a form not human anymore and driven crazy. Then hunted down and put down for the good of the community. Kylie is a human and is dealing with just that. Her last boyfriend, whom she loved, turned with just one kiss. Now 3 yrs later, she still feels responsible. The local psychics do proclamations. Truth seerers, what they saw is what shall be. Because of the shortage of women, from the virus, it is not unheard of to have a triad relationships. One women and two men. When the proclamation comes out that Kylie is to be matched with Michael and Christian. She wants nothing to do with one man let along 2. even worse one vampire and one werewolf together is just unheard of. Kylie, just wants to be left alone and the 2 men have wanted her for a long time. So as the 3 get to know each other and come to an understanding. The male from Kylie's past decides to revisit.
This is a short book. Most that I have read from Anya Bast are short. They are good adult books though. Lots of action, a good love story and really good sex scenes. For a really good quick read, I highly recommend this author! Adults only. I have also read Keeping Kaitlyn,Fury, and Tranquility. All are VERY good shifter, werewolves, magic, vampire type stories.
This entry in the Doomsyear series is an interesting story and it’s nice to read something where werewolves and vampires aren’t the villains in this piece. In spite of the fact that normal humans are now in the minority, and most supernaturals manage to live together relatively peacefully, there’s still the were-vamp animosity floating in the air. Christian and Michael are depicted not as monsters but simply two men loving the same woman and they’re determined to woo and win her using the wiles they now possess, whle peacefully co-existing. They don’t argue with the Council’s decision because they love Kylie. They agree to work together to win her for the same reason. It’s refreshing to find a story about supernaturals in which there’s very little rending of flesh and spilling of blood but instead a love story, complete with non-violent rivals. I would’ve liked to know more about Louis, since his sudden and horrendous appearance is so brief but since this is a series, I’m expecting he may currently be gone but definitely not forgotten. Recommended and looking forward to Book 2.
The Twisted Kiss is available from Samhain Publishing, www.samhainpublishing.com This novel was supplied by the publisher and no remuneration was involved in the writing of this review. NOTE: Pdfs of novels are not given away or loaned after review and after a specific time will be deleted from the website.
One issue I'm finding with Ms Bast is the nagging deja vu I find as I read from different novels. Like with this book and Keeping Kaitlyn, both have a very similiar undercurrent and theme. An unconvinced strong-willed female, two determined males almost opposites in appearance and some evil enity that pushes them all together, where the female realises she can't live without both men.
Its too predictable and I'm finding it in other novels by Ms Bast, like with Fury (Otherkin) only it's one male instead of two but the females all read alike, unconvinced, strong-willed, with the tendancy to at first run or hide from the issues that leaves them unconvinced. The only real differences in these novels appears to be the plot, with the twisted kiss it's science that's created the vampires and werewolves out of the population and the heroine is a bartender. With Keeping Kaitlyn it's a different dimension of shifters and Fury its a town of shifters. The twisted Kiss and Fury even have a group of Elders in both novels that push the issue of the mating.
However when it comes to the Elemental Witches series, there's none of the feelings of deja vu and it's not just the romance that's developed, it's the whole thing, realistic characters, action-packed plot and a steamy romance blended together perfectly. The Twisted Kiss lacks this cohension of awesomeness unfortunately.
The twisted kiss is the first book i read by Anya Bast. It is a post-apocalyptic novel in which we meet Kylie, the vampire Michael and Christian the were.
Because of an experiment gone wrong, the population has been cut in half and consist now mostly out of vampires and weres. Kylie is one of the few remaining humans. The council demands her to mate with a vampire and a werewolf. But Kylie doesn't like this arrangement and is not planning on agreeing! The both men are not to fond of each other, because of their difference in species but they have 1 thing in common: Their long time desire for Kylie, their soulmate! And they are willing to share!
Can Michael and Christian prove to her that they are ''the ones'' for her?
I loved this book! The world that Anya Bast created was very interesting with 3 very likeable main characters. I literally flew trough this book and regret that i finished it. Hopefully there will be more books set in this world!
The attraction between the characters is amazing and the sex scenes are smokin hot!
The Twisted Kiss (Doomsyear #1) by Anya Bast I fully expected The Twisted Kiss to be longer. It was billed as the first in a series and I don’t know why but I figured it would be more than 80 pages. That being said, I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to seeing where Ms. Bast takes this.
Genetic and viral engineering by the government goes awry and folks end up Vampire, werewolf, human or dead. A few turn into psychics and a few turn into monsters well more monstrous than vampires and werewolves. In this post Doomsyear world women are few thus making the necessity of plural pairings common. Kylie is human. The Council (made up of super-psychics) commands that she mate with Michael and Christian. Michael is a Vampire and Christian is a werewolf and they are Kylie’s soul mates if she will let them in.
Mini-Review: I really liked the idea behind this post-apocolyptic world in which vampires, werewolves, and humans co-exist and the council decides who should be paired. The main conflict of the story was a bit underwhelming, although it did unify the main characters. The pace of this novella was fantastic. I couldn't put it down and finished it in one afternoon. I really enjoyed all three characters, and their interactions were realistic. The cover is awesome, one of my favorites from Samhain. The colors and textures read post-apocolyptic.
When I first read the summary, I was so excited. Oh, the possibilities!! Then I saw that it was a novella. I was worried that there would not be enough time to explain this new post-apocalyptic world, plus show three people falling in love, in a short story. I need not have worried. Anya Bast describes this world effortlessly while focusing on the main story of Kylie, Michael, and Christian.
This one had potential, but I felt like there was so much missing. I liked the world, but wished that there was better explanation. I liked that Michael and Christian were able to get past their natures and make things work with Kylie. I also liked that Kylie didn't fight the match. I found Louis to be intriguing, but with the short length that wasn't explored as much.
so so, not as I would have thought. The blurb sounded really good, but I was disappointed, too much sex and not enough post apocalypse for me. The paranormals were too nice... I mean Were & Vamps are supposed to be bloody . If you want a good PA/ Paranormal book I can highly recommend the Ellen Connor series of books. That's how this genre should be. I'm glad this was a freebie.
I opened this book having no idea what it was about and boy was I surprised! The idea of vampires and werewolves in a post apocalyptic world is intriguing to me and something different than the books I have been reading recently. While the plot wasn't overly sophisticated, it was an easy, quick read and it definitely had some steamy spots!
Absolutely delicious! Not for the faint of heart though. ;) It was a quick read, the story line isn't too crazy, but it's enough to satisfy. The lead female character was funny and strong. She had history as did most people in this story, but she learns from it and moves on. She doesn't just take things are they are, she tries to change them.
First time reader for Anya Bast. Original premise but a bit lacking in execution. Maybe the story was just too short..i wanted more details. Michael the vampire and Christian the werewolf are pretty damn hot and when they convince Kylie to give them a shot I just caught fire. I will definitely continue with this series.
Kylie's guilt is silly and far to strong to be realistic. Unique take on a menage that none of the three had much interaction before the council verdict.
This had a bit more raunch than I was expecting, which is probably me not reading blurb/warnings properly. Again, an interesting world, but just a bit too short, I really wanted to be there a bit longer. I really, really liked the set-up for it!
An interesting short story that has a lot of promise. If it had been longer I really think it would have been a 4* but it's far to short and really could have done with a lot more word building yet it was a enjoyable short read!
Honestly, I'm disappointed by this novel; the characters were superficially fleshed out and the plot, well, fairly predictable despite the potential of the interesting world Bast created. A case of insta-love and a soul mate bond that's triggered by sex. *sigh*
short story - would love to have had more on the "Doomsyear" - hopefully there might be a full length novel in this series.. This was a nice story and introduction, more would be required before I could say its worth following as a series
Was a different twist to a werewolf/ vampire story. This is a story about three people after doomsday. One human, one werewolf, and a vampire are brought together by the council. Very explicit adult story.
I liked the underlying story in this book but the characters didn't really have any depth and the story was fast paced. I would have enjoyed it more if there was more of a story and the characters were more developed.
