OUR STORY
A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

If somebody wants to travel to the Maldives and intend to know about the demography, history & culture of the country, it Lonely Planet where one should start. Travelling booking websites shows what they paid to show as they work on a commission basis. Youtube videos are a good source if you want to see any particular resort. But if you want to make a travel plan to the country and want to know about all the places to go and the things to do, then this travel book helps you a lot. This book includes most of the hotels/ resorts/ homestays of Maldives and is ranked based on different parameters. One can choose the perfect resort for considering which parameters they value the most. I’m giving only 3 stars because it’s a 3-year-old edition and changes that occurred due to covid 19 are not covered.

I’m not one to generally review guide books, but the latest edition of Lonely Planet Maldives I picked up came in really handy during my trip. Lots of information on the culture as well as different resorts and islands. Well researched, to the point, and an essential companion for your trip.

I found the book very interesting with clear advice that was applicable to my stay in the Maldives. I got some great titbits of information from it that I was able to use to get the most out of my holiday.

We purchased the book after having booked the holiday, and I have to say that I wish we'd done it the other way around. Based on the information in this book, I think we'd have chosen to stay at another resort rather than simply place all our trust in the travel agency.

We'll just save that for next time!

This guide has a lot of beautiful color pictures that give the reader a grasp of how beautiful that land is. However, the political and cultural situations are not very good these times, so it is better -at least for women- to go some other time when it is allowed to wear summer clothes outdoors.

Useful preparation. Lots of information. I always find myself wishing for more pictures in Lonely Planet guides though! ;)
My version is published 2012, but can't find that one at Goodreads.
